Bed Bugs | Baltimore City Health Department
Information
The Baltimore City Health Department does not have any bed bug mitigation programs; however, we are providing informational materials on bedbugs as a resource for the public.
What Are Bedbugs?
Bed bugs are small insects that feed on human blood. They can reach about 1/4 inch in length and have flat, oval-shaped, wingless bodies. They are reddish-brown in color and may be mistaken for ticks or small cockroaches.
How Does a Home Become Infested with Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs hitchhike and people often unknowingly carry bed bugs into homes in infested luggage and bags, furniture, mattresses and boxsprings, bedding or clothing. They can also travel between houses and apartments through cracks and openings in or around doors, windows, walls, and floors.
How Do I Know if My Home is Infested with Bed Bugs?
Bites are often one of the first signs of a bed bug problem. Most bed bug bites are painless at first but later become large, itchy skin welts. These welts do not have a red spot in the center like fleabites. Although bed bugs are a nuisance, they are not known to spread disease.
The bites can be very similar to other insect bites, and bed bug infestations cannot be confirmed by bites alone. You may also see the bed bugs themselves, small bloodstains from crushed insects or dark spots from their droppings, especially on sheets or other bedding.
For residents who can afford to do so, the Baltimore City Health Department recommends hiring licensed pest management professionals for bed bug eradication. At a minimum, the pest control company should:
Be sure to hire and work with a licensed professional. Bed bug treatment will involve extensive preparation and follow-up on the part of residents that may require a working relationship with a professional. Ask to see a copy of the license or check directly with the Maryland Department of Agriculture by calling 410-841-5710 or visiting the MDA's Website.
Pest control professionals may use a pesticide. Talk with the professional about safe use of pesticides and make sure they:
In all cases, please note that many conventional, over-the-counter pest control products, such as foggers and bug bombs, are ineffective and could make a bed bug problem worse.

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs – Get Rid of Bed Bugs Today
Belonging to the Cimicidae family, bed bugs feed on the blood of mammals, preferably humans. They get their name because they usually live in mattresses, sofas and any other furniture. They are also most active at night. When feeding, they penetrate their hosts skin with two hollow tubes and drink the blood for up to 5 minutes before returning to their hiding place. Bed bug bites normally present as a small, hard, swollen, white welt at the site of the bite and usually itches for several days before healing. These bites can often be treated with hydrocortisone lotion. If a bed beg infestation is not treated with the proper bed bug extermination techniques, individuals may get skin infections and scars from their scratching. Evidence also indicates that repeated exposure to bed bugs could cause anemia or bacterial infections.
Although many people believe that bed bugs infestations are a sign of unsanitary conditions, there are several ways for a home or business (especially hotels) to become infested with bed bugs. People often acquire bedbugs at hotels, motels, and bed-and-breakfasts, both domestically and internationally, and bring them back in their luggage. Sometimes, used or antique furniture can be infested and homeowners may inadvertently bring the pests into their home after buying a piece of antique furniture. Finally, multi-dwelling units such as hostels and dorm rooms are very favorable to the spread of bed bugs. In these cases, bed bug extermination can be difficult and sometimes trained dogs are used to sniff out and locate the various infestations.
Besides for being a nuisance, many worry that bed bugs can pass blood diseases from one host to another. However, evidence has shown that this is not possible. Still, beg bug extermination is necessary because once these infestations start, they are difficult to get rid of. Bed bug extermination usually involves disposing of any sheets, blankets or clothing that came in direct contact with the infected area and then fumigating the entire area. Due to their small size, it is difficult to completely eradicate an infestation without the help of professional bed bug extermination.
Bed bugs are one of the most common household pests. Without proper prevention and protection, bed bugs can present quite a problem for homeowners. Bed bugs populations have seen resurgence in recent years due to increased immigration, international travel, and increased immunity to certain pesticides. Although severe reactions to bed bugs are uncommon, some humans may experience an allergic reaction to their saliva. In general, bed bugs can cause itchy red bumps that can be quite irritating. Because bed bugs are so small and can potentially be located anywhere within the house, homeowners may need to call in professional help to ensure that their home is free of bed bugs. Some professionals don't know to get rid of bed bugs thoroughly (ensuring all eggs sacs are destroyed), so it is important to be a discriminating consumer.
A pest management company can offer a solution to bed bug infestations. With professional exterminators, homeowners get the treatment that they need in order to receive the bed bug solution they seek. The best part of hiring an experienced exterminator is that they have the knowledge and expertise to do it right from the beginning. Call a professional exterminator today!

Bed Bug Bites | Bed Bugs Use Calamine Lotion To Treat …
Filed Under Bed Bug Bites, Bed Bugs Info | Comments Off
If youve been bitten by bed bugs, dont panic upon seeing all the swollen red marks on your body. Instead try to relax and expect some allergic reactions to happen. If the reaction is mild (in my case I nearly fainted due to difficulty in breathing), you probably dont need to go and see a doctor for a treatment. Instead, simple medicines such as calamine lotion and anaesthetic cream can do the job.
There are 2 ways to use calamine lotion to fight the bug. The first way is to apply calamine lotion before going to sleep. Ive tried this before and it worked brilliantly. Bed bugs somehow hate the smell and the chemicals present in calamine lotion. Apply the lotion to the exposed part of your body such as your face, arms and legs. Although you still can be bitten, chances are the number of swollen marks will be significantly reduced. When I applied this method, I always checked the following morning to find any marks on my body. The most that I found was one or two bites, thats it. Much much better than finding the whole body full of red swollen marks
The second way to use calamine lotion is of course apply it to the swollen marks when you realize that youve been bitten by the bed bugs. Applying calamine lotion on the marks will reduce the itchy feelings so you can hold yourself more from scratching and making it worse. It helps to reduce the swelling of the bitten area. Youll feel less irritated and it takes less time for the pain to go away. I of course prefer prevention than cure. So if you know that your place is infested with bed bugs, itd be better for you to apply the lotion before going to bed rather than letting the bed bugs bite you and treating the bites afterwards.
Some people suggested washing the bed bug bites using antiseptic soap and water to prevent infection. I dont prefer this method to treat the bites as it made my skin felt more irritated when making contact with water and soap. Id still prefer calamine lotion over soap to treat the bed bug bites. If you still want to use soap, do it at your own risk. Youve been warned!

Bedbugs: Diagnosis, treatment, and outcome
How do you know if you have bedbugs?
To find out if you have bedbugs, you need to look for two things:
Bites on your body: If you have bedbugs, youre likely to have bites. Bedbug bites usually cause itchy welts. These welts usually appear in a zigzag pattern as show in the photo above.
Youll seldom see bedbugs, so many people mistakenly believe that mosquitos, fleas, or spiders bit them. Sometimes people mistake bedbug bites for a common skin condition such as an itchy rash, hives, or chickenpox.
To make sure you have bedbugs, youll need to look for signs of bedbugs.
Although bedbugs dont usually require serious medical attention, they can cause a great deal of anxiety and restless nights. To help find bedbugs before they find you (and your belongings), dermatologists recommend looking for the following signs near places where you sleep.
Signs of bedbugs: This step is important. If you have a bedbug infestation, you need to find out so that you can get rid of the bedbugs. Getting rid of the bedbugs is the only way to stop the bites.
If you have a large number of bedbugs, you may see the bugs. Most people, however, only see signs of bedbugs. To look for signs of bedbugs, check the places that people sleep for the following:
Bedbug with eggs: A bedbug is a tiny insect with broad, oval body. If it has recently eaten, it has a reddish-brown color.
If you see bedbugs, they will likely scurry toward the closest hiding place. Any dark place such as inside a mattress or even a picture frame makes a good hiding place.
As you watch bedbugs move, it can look like they are flying or jumping because they can crawl quickly. Bedbugs cannot fly or jump; they can only crawl.
If you find signs of bedbugs, call a pest-control company or your property manager. You should not use bug spray or a fogger. These products have little effect on bedbugs.
You should see a dermatologist for treatment if you have:
Your dermatologist may prescribe the following to treat bedbug bites:
Allergic reaction: Some people may require an injection of an antihistamine, corticosteroid, or epinephrine (adrenaline) for a severe allergic reaction.
Infection: An infection may require an antibiotic. If the infection is mild, your dermatologist may recommend an antiseptic medication that you can buy without a prescription. Your dermatologist will tell you which one to use. Your dermatologist also may recommend an antiseptic to prevent a skin infection.
Itch: A prescription antihistamine pill or liquid can help. You also can apply a corticosteroid to the bites. Your dermatologist will tell you which is best for you.
Bedbugs bites can be intensely itchy, so treat the itch to prevent scratching. Scratching can cause a skin infection.
If you do not have any signs of an infection or a serious reaction, you can often treat the bites at home.
To treat bedbug bites:
Bedbug bites usually heal and go away within a week or two.
