Bed bugs hitchhike on peoples belongings and hide in crevices near where they rest. To prevent an infestation of bed bugs, you need to keep them from coming into your home and detect new infestations early. Basically, no silver bullet exists. Pest control has changed and we are still working on the best solutions for bed bug management. Rely on the pest management professional (PMP) for all pesticide use. Focus on preventing introduction and detecting them early. Educate residents and staff about how to prevent bed bugs from hitchhiking on their belongings. Make sure procedures are in place for prompt and proper furniture removal from the property. Install mattress- and box-spring encasements and bed bug interceptors. Offer products and services for free to incentivize cooperation. Teach residents and staff to inspect often. If a unit is being treated for bed bugs, have a staff person check on the preparation progress before the pest management professional arrives.

Adults look like apple seeds with legs. Young bed bugsnymphslook like adults, only smaller. Newly hatched nymphs are poppy seed-sized. Eggs are tiny, white, and hard to spot.

In cracks and crevices of bed frames, floors, walls, furniture, electronics, mattressesany spot they can wedge themselves near where people rest.

Feed on you as you sleep, but if you're not around they can go over a year without food. Bites look like a rash or weltsor you may not notice them at all. Bed bugs don't transmit disease.

Don't bring home hitchhikers: Working in an infested unit? Remember, bed bugs can't jump or fly. And they spend a lot of time hiding. You're likely to see them before they crawl on you. Don't sit or set your equipment down near where people rest. If you have to move an infested object, wear a disposable suit and booties. Keep a change of clothes in your car, change at work, and dry your bed bug clothes for 20 minutes on high heat as soon as you get home.

Buying used furniture, bedding, clothes? Inspect thoroughly. Look for the bugs or the spots they leave behind. Wash and dry bedding and clothes with hot water and high heat. There are other heat options like steam too.

Detect before the infestation grows and spreads: Keep bedroom furniture an inch or two from the wall and a flashlight handy for easier cleaning and inspecting. Bed bug-proof mattress covers, light-colored bedding, and insect interceptors make them easier to spot. Offer professional services and bed bug products for free to incentivize cooperation.

Pesticide options: Leave it to the professionals. Some sprays simply repel bed bugs, spreading them around. Make sure pesticides are labeled specifically for bed bugs. Always read and follow the instructions on the label. The pros may ask the resident to prepare for bed bugs service. The preparation requirements should be least disruptive to the bed bugs and customized to each infestationbed bug prep is not always time consuming.

Bed bug infestations cause significant distress to apartment tenants. This distress becomes worse when a landlord refuses to take appropriate action against the pests. Tenants should familiarize themselves with standard housing habitability laws, which often give tenants the right to take action against negligent landlords. Tenants should also be proactive about bed bugs, asking landlords and property managers about a history of infestation before signing a lease, and reporting suspected bed bugs to building maintenance workers directly.

Bed bugs are tiny insects that live on blood. They are nocturnal creatures, often burrowing in beds then emerging to bite their sleeping victims. Bed bug bites can cause an itchy, uncomfortable rash, though there is no evidence that they spread blood-borne diseases, according to Mayo Clinic staff. A professional exterminator is often needed to eradicate an infestation; the exterminator should treat neighboring rental units, perhaps even the whole building, as a bed bug colony may simply move from a freshly exterminated apartment into a more hospitable environment down the hall.

Landlords in almost all states must keep their rental properties habitable. This means that, as a tenant, you have the right to live in a home that is safe. A vermin infestation makes your home uninhabitable, and it is your landlord's responsibility to address a bedbug problem. If your landlord does not respond to your requests, or does not take action to stop the infestation, your state's laws may give you several options. For example, you may be able to end your lease, withhold rent until the extermination of the bed bugs or pay for an exterminator yourself and deduct the cost from your rent.

Landlords may not be responsible for managing your bed bug problem if they can prove tenants caused the bed bug infestation, for example, by bringing the bugs in with mattresses or other furniture. Landlords may also be absolved of liability if you refuse to cooperate with efforts at exterminating your unit or the building. For example, if you will not let exterminators into your home or refuse to dispose of infested furniture, you may not be able to withhold rent or terminate your lease because your home is uninhabitable.

Some areas, such as New York, now have laws dedicated to both the prevention of bed bug infestation and to notify tenants about the likelihood of bed bug infestation. These laws may require that people seal up mattresses in plastic before putting them in the trash. They may also require landlords to disclose previous bed bug infestations to prospective tenants.

Officials: Bed bug infestations on the rise in Alaska …

Tiny insects the size of apple seeds are infiltrating Alaska, sucking on the blood of unsuspecting travelers, apartment dwellers, home owners, school children and the elderly, among others.

People from all walks of life are struggling with them, said Karin Hendrickson, pesticide control program manager with Alaskas Department of Environmental Conservation. We get multiple calls a day.

The pest in question? Bed bugs. Theyre becoming a big problem in many parts of the state, particularly rural areas, health officials and exterminators say.Hendrickson will speak about Alaska's bed bug problem at a tribal environmental-management conference tomorrow in Anchorage.

Her office used to field about one or two bed bug calls a year, she told KTUU. Now its about one to three calls every day."

State epidemiology officials have also noticed the upward trend. As far as whats causing bed bugs to proliferate in Alaska, they cite increased travel, immigration, and bed bugs becoming resistant to insecticides.

Anchorage-based American Pest Management services cities and remote villages across Alaska. Larry Jones, operations and technical director, said hes never been so busy and bed bugs are his prime target.

...

Twelve years ago we were doing one or two bed bug jobs every month or so. Now I have seven techs working seven days a week in Anchorage alone. In Fairbanks, I have three techs and theyre working six days a day, and theyre booked solid, Jones said.

Jones has come up with a neighborhood discount pricing program tailored for villages. Normally, if one of Jones teams travels to a remote location they would charge $2,000 plus airfare per family or single customer. But because the problem has grown so much, people are now pooling resources. If Jones gets five or six families that want their homes exterminated together, hell charge a flat rate of $2,000 plus airfare for the group.

Jones gets rid of the bugs with a variety of treatments. Portable heat chambers are a preferred method for remote communities. Jones techs will place contaminated items like sofas and mattresses inside the heated chamber and crank it up to 145 degrees F. The furniture, clothing, or infested items will essentially cook for a number of hours until the bed bugs and their eggs are dead.

While calling in a professional is an option, its costly and Hendrickson likes to stress that there are a number of steps people can take to eliminate the problem on their own.

The first thing to do is to inspect beds and sofas regularly, looking at mattress seams, box springs, and others nooks and crannies where bed bugs like to hide. Washing sheets and other bedding regularly is recommended, as is cleaning up cluttered spaces, especially in the bedroom. People should consider using bed bug-resistant mattress encasements as well, said Hendrickson.

If you find bed bugs, dont panic, both Hendrickson and Jones said. Bed bugs arent known to transmit disease although they are considered a public health nuisance and can cause adverse physical, mental and financial consequences, according to the state epidemiologists office.

If items are heavily infested and cant be washed and put in a dryer, it might be best to throw them out instead of trying to kill each and every bed bug and egg. But many places, like hard surfaces, can be wiped down with household cleansers and the bugs squished, placed in plastic bags, and disposed of properly. The Department of Environmental Conservation has an entire page devoted to bed bugs with lots of tips on control and prevention.

Hendrickson and others recommend checking out a hotels bed bug report card before traveling. Bedbugregistry.com is one source but lots of travel review websites are easily accessible online.

Whenever she stays in a hotel Hendrickson always places her luggage (a duffle bag that she can immediately wash and dry at home) on the toilet or in the bathtub before checking the bed thoroughly.

EPA recently awarded a grant to Bristol Bay Area Health Corp. and Tanana Chiefs Conference to address bed bugs in rural Alaska. Leif Albertson, with the Cooperative Extension Service in Bethel, is a member of a new advisory group being formed as a result of the grant. He said that funds will be used to create tools and do outreach to eradicate bed bugs in rural Alaska. Some of the funds will go toward building reusable hot boxes that be used for decontaminating large items like couches and other furniture infested with beg bugs.

Im really excited about it, Albertson said.
