How To Prevent Bed Bugs When Traveling – Go Backpacking
After my confession of getting bed bugs myself, I thought I would at least post some tips on how to prevent bed bugs when traveling from the research I did after getting them in Asia.
In the last 10 years, bed bug infestations has quadrupled. Its not just hostels either, as 4-5 star hotels are getting hit with the same problem too. Bed bugs do not discriminate and the traveler is the most susceptible to getting a case of them. Since most countries in the world have outlawed the chemical DDT, bed bugs are coming back in a whole new way!
To be honest, there really isnt a full proof way of detecting bed bugs in a roomI know thats not what you wanted to hear, is it. They can be hiding anywhere, strike anytime and it almost takes a case of them infecting someone before you can diagnose what it was.
Bed bugs can live as long as 18 months without having to feed. Odds are, you might have stayed in a bug infested room already but nothing happened because they werent out on the prowl the night you slept.
That being said, you can still check for signs. A good traveler should always ask to see the room first, but before you go straight to the bathroom once you hit the light, go to the bed first. The bugs are nocturnal and only move around when its dark, so the best time for seeing signs (or one) of them is right after the light is turned on.

Over the last twenty years, New York City has experienced a veritable explosion of cases of Bedbug Infestation. No matter where you live in the city, and no matter how impeccable that you keep your home, you are at a serious risk of Bedbug Infestation.
Bedbugs thrive in densely populated communities like Brooklyn, and it only takes one fertilized female Bedbug to turn the most beautiful home into a breeding ground for Bedbugs. Bedbugs Exterminator Brooklyn was created in order to help the citizens of Brooklyn rest easier by efficiently and effectively eliminating Bedbug Infestations wherever they manifest.
We have a large staff of experienced and courteous Pest Removal Specialists that have decades of combined experience treating various Pest Problems, including Bedbug Infestations.
Bedbugs are one of the most frustrating pests in New York City. Even though Bedbugs do not directly harbor diseases, like roaches, rats, and fleas, they are still a huge problem. For one thing, Bedbugs are one of the most difficult infestations to remove. Roaches and Rats feed on the dander and organic refuse that humans and animals leave behind. Because of their diet, there are a number of different ways to easily treat these forms of infestation.
Bedbugs, on the other hand, feed exclusively on the blood of human and animal hosts. This means that they do not respond to common baits and traps which are highly effective for other forms of pest. This is actually one reason why reports of Bedbug Infestations exploded so rapidly in America.Exterminators were so effective at eliminating roaches and rats via these methods, that resistant Bedbugs quickly multiplied and became more problematic.
Bedbugs are also a headache because they leave itchy, unsightly bites which take days or even weeks to disappear. In addition to their bites, they also stain your clothing, walls, and sheets with blood and they leave rust-colored spots wherever they defecate. Bedbugs are a multifaceted problem which is nearly impossible to eliminate without the help of a trusted professional like those at Bedbugs Exterminator Brooklyn.
Dont misunderstand, although we pride ourselves on our Bedbug Elimination and Prevention Services, we are more than qualified to combat any and all Pest Infestation issues that you may face at your home or business. Whether you are dealing with roaches, termites, rodents, or avian pests, we can protect your home or business and give you the peace of mind that you deserve!
In addition to Residential Pest Removal, we can also provide you with Pest Prevention and Extermination Treatments at your commercial business as well. Whether you are a Human Resources Director, a restaurant owner, or a hotel manager, we offer dedicated and specialized services for whatever type of business you are responsible for.
Dependent upon your needs, we can provide our Pest Prevention Services at any interval you prefer, whether that be once every couple of months or only twice per year. Of course, if you have any Pest Emergencies, we can still offer our services at a moments notice.
Our company specializes in Pest Removal Services for the Brooklyn Borough, but we also have affiliate service providers in all five boroughs which can provide the same great services. From Brighton Beach to Riverdale, we provide Residential and Commercial Pest Control Services to all citizens of New York City

Understand that under many circumstances, you may be able to brush away visible signs of infestation, but without professional service and care, your Pest Problems will inevitably come back to haunt you. Bed Bug Bites | Bed Bugs Use Calamine Lotion To Treat …
Filed Under Bed Bug Bites, Bed Bugs Info | Comments Off
If youve been bitten by bed bugs, dont panic upon seeing all the swollen red marks on your body. Instead try to relax and expect some allergic reactions to happen. If the reaction is mild (in my case I nearly fainted due to difficulty in breathing), you probably dont need to go and see a doctor for a treatment. Instead, simple medicines such as calamine lotion and anaesthetic cream can do the job.
There are 2 ways to use calamine lotion to fight the bug. The first way is to apply calamine lotion before going to sleep. Ive tried this before and it worked brilliantly. Bed bugs somehow hate the smell and the chemicals present in calamine lotion. Apply the lotion to the exposed part of your body such as your face, arms and legs. Although you still can be bitten, chances are the number of swollen marks will be significantly reduced. When I applied this method, I always checked the following morning to find any marks on my body. The most that I found was one or two bites, thats it. Much much better than finding the whole body full of red swollen marks
The second way to use calamine lotion is of course apply it to the swollen marks when you realize that youve been bitten by the bed bugs. Applying calamine lotion on the marks will reduce the itchy feelings so you can hold yourself more from scratching and making it worse. It helps to reduce the swelling of the bitten area. Youll feel less irritated and it takes less time for the pain to go away. I of course prefer prevention than cure. So if you know that your place is infested with bed bugs, itd be better for you to apply the lotion before going to bed rather than letting the bed bugs bite you and treating the bites afterwards.
Some people suggested washing the bed bug bites using antiseptic soap and water to prevent infection. I dont prefer this method to treat the bites as it made my skin felt more irritated when making contact with water and soap. Id still prefer calamine lotion over soap to treat the bed bug bites. If you still want to use soap, do it at your own risk. Youve been warned!

How to Use Diatomaceous Earth for Bed Bugs (5 Steps) | eHow
Follow
Diatomaceous earth is made of the shell remains of billions of dead microscopic sea creatures, called diatoms. The shells are made of silicon dioxide, a fine powdery substance to humans, but millions of sharp edged particles to household insect pests, including bed bugs. When diatomaceous earth gets into the joints and body parts of a bed bug, it cuts into its exoskeletons, causing it to dry out and die. Some insects also ingest the powder and it kills them from within. Relatively inexpensive, nontoxic and simple to apply and remove, diatomaceous earth may be the solution to your bed bug problem.
View Item Details
Dismantle the bed completely. Set all parts, including the disassembled frame, headboard, rails and bed tail, box spring and mattress out to an open indoor area.
Dust all of the frame parts, headboard rails and bed tail thoroughly with the diatomaceous earth. Focus on dusting cracks, seams, crevices and other places where bed bugs may hide.
Thoroughly dust the mattress and box spring on all sides. Concentrate dusting in folds and edges.
Dust all cracks and crevices within the bedroom, particularly around the location of the bed. Also, dust the carpet in the room. If furniture is located near the bed, such as chairs or night stands, consider dusting these items as well.
Leave the diatomaceous earth in place for a minimum of 48 hours. Vacuum the dust from all items and the carpet thoroughly. Dispose of the vacuum bag immediately to prevent possible reinfestation from vacuumed bed bugs that are still alive.

Bed Bugs | Baltimore City Health Department
Information
The Baltimore City Health Department does not have any bed bug mitigation programs; however, we are providing informational materials on bedbugs as a resource for the public.
What Are Bedbugs?
Bed bugs are small insects that feed on human blood. They can reach about 1/4 inch in length and have flat, oval-shaped, wingless bodies. They are reddish-brown in color and may be mistaken for ticks or small cockroaches.
How Does a Home Become Infested with Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs hitchhike and people often unknowingly carry bed bugs into homes in infested luggage and bags, furniture, mattresses and boxsprings, bedding or clothing. They can also travel between houses and apartments through cracks and openings in or around doors, windows, walls, and floors.
How Do I Know if My Home is Infested with Bed Bugs?
Bites are often one of the first signs of a bed bug problem. Most bed bug bites are painless at first but later become large, itchy skin welts. These welts do not have a red spot in the center like fleabites. Although bed bugs are a nuisance, they are not known to spread disease.
The bites can be very similar to other insect bites, and bed bug infestations cannot be confirmed by bites alone. You may also see the bed bugs themselves, small bloodstains from crushed insects or dark spots from their droppings, especially on sheets or other bedding.
For residents who can afford to do so, the Baltimore City Health Department recommends hiring licensed pest management professionals for bed bug eradication. At a minimum, the pest control company should:
Be sure to hire and work with a licensed professional. Bed bug treatment will involve extensive preparation and follow-up on the part of residents that may require a working relationship with a professional. Ask to see a copy of the license or check directly with the Maryland Department of Agriculture by calling 410-841-5710 or visiting the MDA's Website.
Pest control professionals may use a pesticide. Talk with the professional about safe use of pesticides and make sure they:
In all cases, please note that many conventional, over-the-counter pest control products, such as foggers and bug bombs, are ineffective and could make a bed bug problem worse.
