While this poem has been passed along from generation to generation of kids being but to bed rather tongue in cheek, What has recently happened in a local apartment complex, and what is becoming a serious health issue nationally, is not a laughing matter.

Bed bugs, or Cimicids as they are known to in the scientific community, are rapidly increasing in population and pose a renewed serious health risk.

What is worst about bed bugs is that they specifically feed and prey on blood, and the most common Cimicids prey specifically and exclusively on HUMAN blood, hence the reason they are so often found nesting in human bedding. They tend to be nocturnal in nature, which makes the problem even worse, and often as a consequence go unnoticed and untreated for lengthy periods of time. Bed bugs are parasites, and generally immune to most commonly available pesticides. The result of an infestation are rashes, bites, and other disorders, mostly dermal in nature.

JAMA, one of the most notable and respected medical journals, published a health article just a few years ago and concluded that due to the restrictions on previously available and toxic pesticides, immune resistance and the control over their nature predators, such as roaches and spiders, that the bed bug population is rapidly rising across most developed countries again, including America.

These parasites can double in weight on a single feeding on human blood and sustain itself for months without biting again, making control even more difficult. While historically these problems were generally isolated to poor sanitary conditions, such as homeless shelters, barracks and other habitations with less than stellar cleanliness, the durability of these parasites and like of natural or man-made controls has seen them flourish again in hotels, motels, and other hospitality industry facilities.and even personal residences.

While bed bugs are a growing problem, you can fight back. If you have a potential problem with them in your home, contact a pesticide agency. If you have had a problem with them in a rental facility, apartment or hospitality setting such as a hotel, contact us. Nobody knows a pest better than a lawyer.

Recently, BCA was hired to represent two women in Houston who moved into an apartment that contained Bed Bugs.

On December 11, 2015 Brent Coon and Associates filed a lawsuit against BKR Memorial, LLC Individually and D/B/A Memorial Heights at Washington Apartments for money damages under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Consumer Protection Act.

On January 13, 2015, Katelyn McClelland and Valerie Palmer executed a one year lease for an apartment at Memorial Heights at Washington Apartments (Memorial Hights) at 201 S Heights Blvd, Houston, Texas.

On their first night at the Memorial Heights apartments, Katelyn McClelland and Valerie Palmer were bitten numerous times by bed bugs, which required medical treatment. They immediately alerted property management Midway Properties of the infestation. Instead of contacting an exterminator and addressing the problem, Midway claimed that Ms. McClelland and Ms. Palmer were responsible for bringing the bed bugs into the apartment. The plaintiff's then personally paid for an exterminator inspector to investigate the bed bugs. The inspector found bed bugs, both living and dead along with shed exoskeletons around the apartment. The investigation concluded the bed bugs were in the apartment long before to Ms. McClelland and Ms. Palmer took residence in the apartment.

Ms. McClelland and Ms. Palmer suffered numerous bed bug bites which required medical attention. Ms. Palmar suffered over 55 bed bites alone. They both suffered an allergic reaction, in addition to having to receive treatment from a dermatologist to prevent permanent scarring. Ms. McClelland and Ms. Palmer incurred thousands of dollars in out of pocket medical expenses. Both also required to pay thousands of dollars in out of pocket expenses to replace the property that they had to leave behind because of the infestation as much of the property could not be saved and need to be replaced. Additionally, both women had to pay an exorbitant amount of money to have her clothes, furniture, electronics and other items specially cleaned and treated.

McClelland and Palmers prior property was also checked for bed bugs none were found. If there are no bed bugs at your old apartment, and lots of old dead bed bugs along with many more live bed bugs that are thriving in your new apartment there is no room for doubt as to where the bed bugs came from said Bob Schwartz of Brent Coon & Associates, the attorney representing both for McClelland and Palmer. Katelyn and Valerie are not trying to get rich here, they simply are trying to get compensated for their damages and suffering. Hopefully, the owners of the apartment will do the right thing

The bed bug lawsuit seeks compensation for economic damages, mental anguish damages and additional damages. The lawsuit was filed in the District Court of Harris County, Texas.

There was also a reports of a Bed Bug Lawsuit filed by a California couple who found bed bugs on their vacation in New York city. The couple traveled to the Astor on the Park Hotel on the Upper West Side in Manhattan for a dream vacation on New Year's Eve. They shot video of the bed bug infestation, which you can view below.

Question: Are Bed Bugs in My Hotel?

Are bed bugs making an unwelcome appearance in your hotel room? How can you find out if you're in a "bed bug" hotel? Better yet, how can you avoid staying in a hotel infested with bed bugs?

Answer:

The best way to avoid coming into contact with bed bugs at a hotel is to avoid booking a room in a hotel with recent reports of bed bugs. One site that collects reports of bed bugs from hotel guests is The Bed Bug Registry.

The Registry allows you to look up a particular hotel, even a city, and see where guests have reported encounters with bed bugs in a hotel or apartment building nearby. If your hotel is listed with bed bug sightings, don't panic. Pay attention to the date of the last report of bed bugs. The hotel may have cleared up the problem.

Once you check in, take some time to look for the telltale signs of bed bugs in the hotel room. Adult bed bugs grow to a half an inch long, and you can spot them. They are, however, good at hiding, so you'll have to look closely. Common places for bed bugs to hide in hotel rooms are in the seams of the mattress (pull up the sheets to look closely), in the cracks of the bed's headboard, in the baseboards, and in the folds of upholstered furniture.

Also keep an eye out for droppings the bed bugs might have left behind in the hotel room. They'd appear as small brown spots, possibly tinged with blood. Check the sheets and mattress for these tiny spots.

If you suspect bed bugs in your hotel, try to get some proof so your complaint will be taken seriously.

You don't even have to catch one; if you see a bed bug, take a picture with your cell phone to show the hotel manager. Don't expect any bed bugs you see to stay in one place while you call down to the hotel staff; they crawl about as fast as ants and like to hide.

If you have a reasonable suspicion that bed bugs are infesting your hotel room, you may not have to leave the hotel.

Bed bugs in a hotel rarely travel from room to room, and usually arrive with a guest. Switching to another room in the hotel should solve the problem. Let the hotel manager know right away about the bed bugs; the hotel needs to be able to address the problem immediately.

Even if you don't see any signs of bed bugs in your hotel, you should be careful not to allow any the opportunity to hitch a ride home with you. Don't put your clothes on the carpet or on upholstered chairs. Likewise, keep your suitcase off the floor and the bed. Use a metal suitcase rack if one is available.

Bed bugs may be coming to a bed near youtheyre back in the US, spreading throughout the major cities, and stronger than they were half a century ago (when the US lead a successful campaign to eradicate them).

Now, the few surviving colonies and new ones brought in from other countries are DDT (the now banned pesticide used to eradicate them) resistant. Fighting bed bugs isnt just a matter of avoidance, it will be a matter of persistence. How Do You Get Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs can be spread from an unknowing host, or unfortunately acquired in a hotel room. Soon, though, its estimated that the hard-to-kill parasites will again spread throughout the US, so while avoiding the most likely sources may help today, in a few years it will be hard to judge where to find bed bugs.

How do you get bed bugs into your home? They infest your clothes, your suit case, or if youre in an apartment they may choose it to lay their eggs!

What is Bed Bugs Affect On The Body?

Most people are bitten by bed bugs when they sleep (sometimes causing insomnia) although if they get into your clothes, furniture, etc. bites can occur anytime.

Bed bugs affect each person differently, depending on their skin and their immune system (i.e., how much those bites will itch). Some people will wake up covered in red spots, some people wont show symptoms, or else will have delayed symptoms (days to weeks).

Other people might have bad reactions to bed bug bites, getting blisters, or a sever itch. There isnt any severe risk from bed bugs, but if you scratch too much (tearing skin) you can get cellulitis. Cellulitis is a pretty severe skin infection; most people have a hard time getting rid of cellulitis, and theres a risk that it could spread into deeper layers of skin and even the blood stream (causing sepsis).

Where To Find Bed Bugs

In any fabric, from your mattress, to your sheets, to your clothes! Although the infestation can start in one room, where to find bed bugs will end up being your entire house (due to bed bug mating habitsthe wounded female flies to another un-infested area for shelter, and then lays her eggs).

If youre looking for where to find bed bugs to confirm an infestation, try checking under your sheets and your box spring. Bed bugs are parasites, and they use humans as food.

Fighting Back: What Is Bed Bugs Weakness?

At this point, most people are concerned with preventing bed bugs rather than fighting them. Allergen covers (which are plastic) at least on your box spring if not also on your mattress are essential. Being aware of the possibility when visiting other cities or staying in hotel rooms, and watching for hitch-hiking bed bugs when you return home is also important. (You can also check the hotel bed for bed bugs, which are small, flat, and brown-red).

But, what is bed bug weakness? If its not as simple as hiring an exterminator to spray your house, how can you ever get rid of such an awful parasite?

Heat, particularly hot water. Machine wash hot everything that wont be ruined, steam clean carpets, curtains, and furniture (or have professionally cleaned if you arent sure the material will be safe when treated with hot water). Keeping this up ritualistically until a few weeks have passed (long enough to ensure no more eggs have hatched) and there are no signs of bed bugs. (Wrapping things in plastic for the duration can reduce how much you have to clean).

Many parasites, including bed bugs, are often repelled by plants that humans enjoy. Mint and lavender planted around the house can help deter many parasitic pests and bugs, and heating scented oil may help deter bed bugs from spreading into other rooms of the house.

Eucalyptus oil may also not only deter bed bugs, but be harmful to them. If youre losing sleep because of bed bug bites, using eucalyptus oil or lotion before bed may help deter bites, or add a few drops to your washer when doing your sheets (it will also kill mites!).

Keep the air in your bed room fresh and circulating. Bed bugs are attracted to body warmth as well as CO2 (the air you exhale), so reduce their attraction by keeping the air circulating.

And if you choose to use pesticides, higher a professional. At least one woman has died and several other have been poisoned in their attempts to use pesticides against bed bugs!
