This is an update from our story last night on the bed bug treatment-related fire in Detroit.

The tenant who accidentally started the fire in Detroit on Tuesday has now spoken to journalists, offering a heartbreaking apology for her actions:

According to Fox 2 News, the tenant had bed bugs for a whole year, and desperation when the bed bug problem persisted after professionals treated the home led her to take matters into her own hands:

They had sent exterminators over, but it didnt work, and these things just kept at me, they just kept at me, she says. I went in there with clear skin, now my skin is all bitten up and looking like leather. I just want to get rid of these bed bug tormentors.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, says she killed some of the bedbugs a few weeks ago by turning up the heat in her west side apartment, which is near Outer Drive and Rouge Park. So, she says she did the same Tuesday and doused her floors with alcohol, which is often used to kill bedbugs. But, she also had her oven on and she did not know the fumes are flammable.

When I was standing in the front room, the whole floor just ignited. The whole floor just ignited! I couldnt get the fire extinguisher, she says.

As we noted in our previous post, Fox 2 reported yesterday that officials had confirmed the fire was started after the tenant used a smoke bomb and then tried to put it out with a pillow.

Its not clear from this report whether that is correct, but the tenant here reports that a floor sprayed with alcohol ignited from the lit oven.

Alcohol is a contact killer for bed bugs but is highly flammable and if used at all, should be used with great caution.

This is a tragic situation and the womans story of living with bed bugs for a year makes the desperate nature of her actions more understandable.

Her phone call on the news report is quite heartbreaking. I really hope she can forgive herself and move on.

No one should be in the position of living with bed bugs for so long. This story highlights the need both for education about how to kill bed bugs safely, what to expect during treatment, and how to resolve bed bug problems in apartment buildings.

If bed bug treatments fail, there will be reasons why (which might include attached neighbors with untreated infestations, or the methods being used, among other things).

If you are in this situation, there are safer options. Ask landlord to provide more treatment, and ask if they have professionally inspected attached units.

Dont assume treatments cant work. In this case, it isnt clear whether the tenant had given up on professional treatments too soon, whether the landlord stopped providing them, or what other factors were involved.

Self-treatment can be done if professional treatment truly isnt an option, but you need to educate yourself about safe and effective methods.

Above all else, please be careful.

Alcohol is flammable, smoke bombs and other bug bombs and foggers have their own dangers and dont work well on bed bugs anyway, and heating your home to treat bed bugs isnt a do it yourself job and can be dangerous.

Bedbugs were once a common public health pest worldwide, which declined in incidence through the mid 20th century. Recently however, bed bugs have undergone a dramatic resurgence and worldwide there are reports of increasing numbers of infestations. Bed bugs are one of the great travelers of the world and are readily transported via luggage, clothing, bedding and furniture. As such, they have a worldwide distribution.

Bed Bug Bites

Symptoms of a Bed Bug InfestationMost bug bug problems are not detected until someone has been bitten. The bite is painless. The salivary fluid injected by bed bugs typically causes the skin to become irritated and inflamed, although individuals can differ in their sensitivity. A small, hard, swollen, white welt may develop at the site of each bite. This is accompanied by severe itching that lasts for several hours to days. A bed bug infestation can be recognized by blood stains from crushed bugs or by rusty (sometimes dark) spots of excrement on sheets and mattresses, bed clothes, and walls. Fecal spots, eggshells, and shed skins may be found in the vicinity of their hiding places. An offensive, sweet, musty odor from their scent glands may be detected when bed bug infestations are severe.

Hiding Places Bed bugs can live in almost any crevice or protected location. They will usually stay close to their food source (blood) but can rapidly spread through a multiple residence building, hotel or other accommodations. The most common place to find them is the bed. Bed bugs often hide within seams, tufts, and crevices of the mattress, box spring, bed frame and headboard.

Finding Bed Bugs Some Bed bug symptoms are not obvious to the untrained eye. A thorough inspection requires dismantling the bed and standing the components on edge. Things to look for are the bugs themselves, and the light-brown, molted skins of the nymphs. Dark spots of dried bed bug excrement are often present along mattress seams or wherever the bugs have resided. Oftentimes the gauze fabric underlying the box spring must be removed to gain access for inspection and possible treatment. Successful treatment of mattresses and box springs is difficult, however, and infested components may need to be discarded. Cracks and crevices of bed frames should be examined, especially if the frame is wood. (Bed bugs have an affinity for wood and fabric more so than metal or plastic). Headboards secured to walls should also be removed and inspected. In hotels and motels, the area behind the headboard is often the first place that the bugs become established. Bed bugs also hide among items stored under beds.

Nightstands and dressers should be emptied and examined inside and out, then tipped over to inspect the woodwork underneath. Oftentimes the bugs will be hiding in cracks, corners, and recesses. Upholstered chairs and sofas should be checked, especially seams, tufts, skirts, and crevices beneath cushions. Sofas can be major bed bug hotspots when used for sleeping.

Other common places to find bed bugs include: along and under the edge of wall-to-wall carpeting (especially behind beds and furniture); cracks in wood molding; ceiling-wall junctures; behind wall-mounts, picture frames, switch plates and outlets; under loose wallpaper; amongst clothing stored in closets; and inside clocks, phones, televisions and smoke detectors.

The challenge is to find and treat all places where bugs and eggs may be present. Bed bugs tend to congregate in certain areas, but it is common to find an individual or some eggs scattered here and there. Persistence and a bright flashlight are requisites for success. Professional Inspectors sometimes also inject a pyrethrum-based, flushing agent into crevices to help reveal where bugs may be hiding. A thorough treatment of a home, hotel, or apartment may take several hours or days.

I researched back to 1-1-10 and over 150 various comments on several online databases. I found multiple reports of bed bugs at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, 3667 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas, NV 89109. For example Bianca reported on 6-10-10, I stayed here back in April, on our last day we found over a dozen bed bugs in one of the beds, they were coming from the headboard. We (myself and the other people in my trip) are just hearing (3 months later) back from PH reps , they informed us that there is nothing they can do about it and they have not even said sorry. DO NOT STAY HERE; Travel_Truth123, 8-8-10, and did I mention the bed bugs! Would never stay here again.; stevbur, on 5-15-10, I got bed bugs here in late April 2010 and the hotel staff did not respond well.

I stayed at the Russel Hotel 4 * in London, but didnt look very clean. Although I didnt get any bites, thank God, I saw 2 suspicious looking bugs. One was crawing on the desk and another one was crawling near the ceiling and then disapperared in a crack. They looked brownish and about halve an inch long. Im back home and uttely discusted, I can wash my cothes but not my coat, hat, jacket I left the luggage downstairs and will shake it and check for bugs. I recently found what look like bites on both of my upper thighs. The bites on one leg form a big circle, and a triangle on the other leg. They definitely look like bed bug bites Ive seen on this site. But Im baffled because my legs were covered, and areas that were exposed, like my arms, ankles and neck, are bite-free. Ive searched my mattress, box spring, bed frame and pillows and havent found any sign of bed bugs. And every morning when I get up, I flip back my sheets to look for bugs and havent found anything. If I have bed bugs, I just want to get rid of them, but I dont feel good about hiring an exterminator if Im not even sure I have them. Is there anything I can do to find out for sure that I have them? I have a theory that my legs might have gotten bit while I was at the movies. They showed up the morning after I was at a theater. Is that possible? Help me! I cant stop doing bed bug research and its driving me crazy!

I searched a number of online databases for reports of bed bugs at Caesars Palace Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, 3570 Las Vegas Blvd South, Las Vegas, NV 89109, and found several. For example: Stepsi, on 9-13-10. First night there woke up scratching my body to find myself full of little bumps all over, rash like and when we complained they did NOTHING!!!; and lilacsanddoves, on 8-3-10 Spent a week in a classic room and did not see any bugs, but since our return home, we have found bugs in our suitcase and in the area we unpacked. I did find others.
