Bed bug infestation temporarily closes Alabama fire station – NTV

In this photo taken Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, Fire Chief Jeff Perkins talks about a bed bug infestation forced the shutdown of a fire station in Florence, Ala. The station will be cleaned and bedding material destroyed before it reopens. (Matt McKean/The TimesDaily via AP)

A fire station in northwestern Alabama has had to be temporarily closed after an infestation of bed bugs sent at least one firefighter for medical treatment.

Florence city officials said in a news release Thursday that Fire Station 2 is undergoing treatment by an exterminator. The bedding will be destroyed.

Fire officials say they were notified of a potential infestation when a firefighter discovered bites on his wrist Monday. No other firefighters were noticeably affected.

Mayor Steve Holt says officials have determined the cause of the infestation and are taking preventive measures to make sure the same thing doesn't happen at any other facility.

Station 2's nine firefighters have been moved to two other stations, along with their trucks and equipment.

Bed bug issues in Pocatello

POCATELLO, Idaho - (KIFI/KIDK) According to pest control experts, Pocatello is seeing an increase in bed bugs.

"We have found that it is not just at the shelter, it is throughout South East Idaho. In a lot of housing accommodations, it is at the jail, it can be at motels, they are anywhere," said BJ Stensland, the Executive Director at Aid for Friends.

Not only are the bugs annoying, but they survive on the blood of mammals and that includes humans.

"This year we have seen more patients coming in with really they do not know what is going on. But the bites and lesions that see are pretty characteristic of bed bug bites. so really we have been seeing a lot more of that," commented Dr. Kurtis Holt, the Director of the Emergency Department at the Portneuf Medical Center.

Some professionals in the area believe that part of the reason businesses and public buildings cannot keep up with bed bugs is because they keep getting reintroduced by new people. Between students coming to Idaho State University, people visiting Pocatello and people working for the rail road, there are lots of people coming through Pocatello.

"Because of the rotation of people, it is hard to keep [bed bugs] under control," added Stensland.

One motel manager in Pocatello said they spray for bed bugs, but everyday they get new people staying there. Which means, that everyday a new person could reintroduce bed bugs into their building.

It is so easy to spread bed bugs, a person could pick up a bed bug on their jacket and then start an infestation in their home.

One way to prevent the spread of bed bugs it so keep your clothes off the floor of motels. Check the stitching around bedding for possible signs of bed bugs or bed bug stains. And if you have been traveling, make sure to wash out your suitcase and wash your clothes in hot water.

If you do see bed bugs in your home, it is important you call a pest control company right away to prevent the infestation from getting worse.

A D.C. elementary school is shutting its doors to students for "several weeks" after rodents and bed bugs were discovered at the school.

D.C. Public Schools sent a letter to parents of Savoy Elementary School students on Friday, saying workers would thoroughly clean the school building and replace all soft materials, including rugs, cots, blankets and pillows, on Monday, Feb. 6 and Tuesday, Feb. 7.

The school, at 2400 Shannon Place, Southeast, will have to pass a safety and health inspection after the cleaning, according to the letter.

While the school is cleaned and inspected, the school will temporarily relocate. DCPS officials said they would update parents by 3 p.m. Sunday about the temporary location.

"We will also communicate where Savoy students can access meal service (breakfast, lunch and supper) on Monday and Tuesdsay, as well as a plan for transportation to teh new location if necessary," read the letter from DCPS Chancellor Antwan Wilson.

According to DCPS Press Secretary Michelle Lerner, Savoy Elementary students "will be at a different building location for several weeks" before they can go back to the school. Lerner did not give further information about the other location.

Parents who have concerns about their child's health should contact their doctor, Wilson advised in the letter.

DC school to close due to bedbugs, pests | WTOP – WTOP

WASHINGTON Due to bedbugs and other pests, Savoy Elementary School will be closed Monday and Tuesday for a thorough cleaning, D.C. public schools officials said Friday.

In a letter sent to parents, Chancellor Antwan Wilson said all soft materials in the building, including rugs, cots, blankets and pillows, would be replaced. The school would then be inspected by the health department.

The letter stated that school officials planned to tell parents by 3 p.m. Sunday where school will be held during the cleaning. The Department of General Services started cleaning the school Friday evening.

The closure comes amidst parents complaints that rats, mice and bedbugs have been a problem since November. The school is located at 2400 Shannon Place Southeast.

Some of the rodent concerns were addressed on the schools Facebook page on Jan. 16. The post stated that a mass trapping for rodents had been conducted over the winter holiday and that a pest control company has performed an extensive assessment of the school.

The posting disputed that there was a bedbug infestation, though Fridays letter referenced the recent threat of pests and bed bugs as the reason for the closure. There wasnt a clear time frame given for how long the cleaning would take. Michelle Lerner, a spokeswoman for the school system, said in an email that officials planned to provide updates to parents on Sunday regarding where students should plan to attend school for the next several weeks.

We will also communicate where Savoy students can access meal service (breakfast, lunch, and supper) on Monday and Tuesday, Lerner said.

Parents were advised to direct health related questions to their doctors.
