Sniffing dogs help get rid of bed bugs – The Daily Courier

For anyone who has dealt with the irritating bites of bedbugs, that cute little rhyme about not letting the bedbugs bite is anything but cute. Theyre tiny, hide most of the time, and come out only to feed at night, generally on human blood.

Chances are, you heard little about them until perhaps a decade ago. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a joint statement in 2010 that said, Although bedbug populations dropped dramatically during the mid-20th century, the United States is one of many countries now experiencing an alarming resurgence in the population of bedbugs.

Though the exact cause is not known, experts suspect the resurgence is associated with increased resistance of bedbugs to available pesticides, greater international and domestic travel, lack of knowledge regarding control of bedbugs, the statement said.

The good news is that bedbugs can be exterminated, and, once gone, will stay gone unless theyre re-introduced into the home.

Bedbugs (cimex lectularius)

Bedbugs, contrary to some myths, are not necessarily a sign of a dirty or unsanitary home.

Youd be surprised where you can pick up bedbugs. You can bring bedbugs home from a movie theater, they come home from the library, you can bring bedbugs home from a hotel, said Cecil Newell at Yavapai County Community Health Services. They like to hitchhike.

Once in a home, they will bite their victimmostly at nightdrink until full, and then go into hiding in very tiny cracks and crevasses.

The good news, according to the CDC, is that they dont transmit or spread disease, although some people can be allergic to their bites.

Preventing an infestation can be difficult. Although theyre small, and can be seen, most people arent likely to notice them until they wake up with itchy bites.

What doesnt work

Pesticides, whether theyre the spray can variety or the bug bomb, dont work.

The bedbugs simply retreat further into their hiding places until the application is over and the poison subsides.

Another treatment involves the use of diatomaceous earth (DE), which does kill the bedbugs. However, several sources, including the EPA, point out that diatomaceous earth is a hazard to the human respiratory system, and advise against both pool-grade and food-grade DE use.

What does work

The best treatment for bedbugs is heat, but that needs to be done by a professional, Newell said.

Locally, AZEX Pest Solutions does use heat to eliminate bedbugs, said Sonny Henegar, who heads up the K9 program and says it works very well.

The company uses dogs to identify whether a location has a bedbug infestation; the dogs are trained to sniff out their distinctive odor and alert to show the handler exactly where bedbugs are hiding.

The bedbugs live in places that you cant spray chemicals, he said. They live in books, they lie in pillowcases.

But his company heats up a room to about 130 degrees to kill the critters.

How it works is ingenious: the heat is slowly increased over hours time, Henegar said, and like the story of the frog that sat in a pan on water while the water was heated to boiling, the bugs dont seem to realize theyre in trouble until its too late.

This method also has the advantage of killing the bedbugs, not driving them away, only to return. The idea behind our heaters is, because its a low heat, they dont leave the room, he said.

AZEX is now teaching pest control companies from around the U.S. how to deal with bedbugs at its facility in Prescott, Henegar said. We teach them how to use heat to eradicate bedbugs.

Bedbug exterminators are doing a booming business these days.

(Bedbugs) are everywhere, he said.

Bed Bugs Found at Second DC Elementary School | NBC4 … – NBC4 Washington

Another D.C. elementary school is dealing with bed bugs not long after a school in Southeast had to shut its doors because of an infestation.

Bed bugs were found on people three different times this month at Miner Elementary School in Northeast, D.C. Public Schools officials said. It is not known if the bugs were found on students.

"Were continuing to monitor the situation, but we dont believe that this is a widespread infestation," said a spokesperson for DCPS.

The DCPS operations and wellness teams met with staff at the school on Wednesday to go over protocols for identifying and reporting potential pests, the spokesperson said.

In early February, DCPS closed Savoy Elementary School in Southeast after rodents and bed bugs were discovered at the school. Savoy students have been going to class at a temporary location while officials handle the infestation issue.

Miner Elementary School students brought home the following letter to their parents Wednesday:

Dear Miner Elementary School Community,

Here at Miner Elementary School, it is my priority to ensure that all students and staff are safe and the school environment is conducive to teaching and learning. To keep you informed on how we are doing this on an ongoing basis, I want to share an update regarding routine maintenance and cleaning at our school.

Throughout the year, DC Public Schools (DCPS) proactively works with the Department of General Services (DGS) to prevent and treat any potential threat of pests (rodents, bugs, etc.) at all schools. DCPS and DGS work with school staff to identify the location of potential pests, complete a thorough inspection for entry points, fix any structural issues which may be a contributing factor, and bring in pest control services, including exterminators, if necessary. On a daily basis, the school custodian team is also committed to ensuring the building is thoroughly cleaned and free of unwanted waste that may attract pests.

We follow strict protocols when any pest is identified here. First, we immediately confirm the details of the sighting. For example: what was seen, when it was seen, and in what area of the school. Then, our custodial foreman will evaluate the area and complete necessary cleaning and maintenance. If necessary, we will schedule pest control services to treat any particular area or location. Finally, if multiple exterminations are required, a broader communication to families via letter, email, and ConnectEd/Robo is disseminated.

If the pest identified is a bed bug or lice, or another insect, it is the school nurse's role to identify, notify, and educate affected students, parents, and staff on next steps and available resources. Please note, students are not excluded from school for bed bugs or lice.

As we continue to monitor the school with our agency partners, and conduct routine maintenance and cleaning, the entire school community plays a role in keeping our school building clean and safe. From properly disposing of all trash and unwanted food to keeping food limited to designated eating areas, we can together reduce the likelihood of unwanted pests. We want to thank you for keeping our school building clean and safe for all.

Please reach out to me directly if you have any questions or if youd like to report an issue in the school building or any concerns regarding your childs well-being.

Sincerely,

Andrea Mial

Principal

Letting bedbugs bite — because science – Firstcoastnews.com

When the very mention of your work causes people to recoil in horror, you develop coping mechanisms.

Sometimes I lie, concedes Brittany Campbell, a doctoral student of entomology at the University of Florida. Depending on the day, whether I feel like talking about it, I might be a manager at Target.

In reality, her job is bedbug research, a topic some cant discuss without freaking out.

People dont even want to talk to me, she says. I scare them.

Campbells work is an essential part of fighting the countrys decade-long bedbug resurgence. Once nearly eradicated in the U.S., the bloodsucking insects returned in force in the late 1990s. The wave of frenzied media coverage that followed has subsided, but not the bedbug problem. If anything, says Dr. Philip Koehler, who built the universitys urban entomology lab, its worse.

Were seeing a lot more infestations that what we did a few years ago.

Then, in November, the lab revealed a new species the tropical bedbug. Discovered in a home in South Florida, the insect hadnt been seen in the U.S. in more than 70 years.

Campbell was personally delighted. I was certainly excited, she says of the discovery. As a scientist I was jumping up and down ready to tell the world.

But in the battle of against bedbugs, she acknowledges, its not necessarily good news. You dont know what impact its going to have, you dont know how quickly its going to reproduce, says Campbell of the new species. You dont know if its going to respond as well [to pesticides].

With a single female capable of laying 500 eggs, the bedbug is a prolific breeder. Its also uniquely difficult to get rid of, since its preferred nest is a place most people like to spend a peaceful 8 hours not one they want doused with pesticides.

But getting rid of the intractable bug can push people to do irrational things, says Koehler. They dont want to go home sleep in their bed and have bugs crawling on them, and sucking their blood. Some people have died after spraying their mattresses with insecticide, accidentally torched their homes using heat treatments, even had air foggers explode.

Usually the bugs are still crawling after the place is blown apart, he says.

The only reliable way to get rid of bedbugs is to hire a professional exterminator, Koehler says. But the great irony is that -- in the lab, bedbugs are kind of feeble.

They are hard to kill in peoples homes, says Campbell. But for whatever reason, we have a hard time keeping alive in the lab.

Caring for the bugs means cleaning out colonies when their Petri dish gets crowded, keeping them in a climate-controlled room, feeding them artificially on warm rabbit blood, or live chickens.

And, when a colony is in trouble, it might mean giving of yourself. Literally.

Research scientist Roberto Pereira helped nurture the labs fledgling tropical bedbug colony by allowing them to suck his own blood.

Because we have very few insects, and we were trying to get this colony started, I took the liberty of feeding these bedbugs on myself, he says.

He it that sounds weird. Its not the type of conversation to bring up on the first date or anything. Most of us dont like to admit we have done that, because most people think of [entomologists] as crazy anyway.

Pereira says its not all that uncommon. Harold Harlan, a retired military medical entomologist, raised thousands of bedbugs in his basement, feeding them on his own blood. And, as a recent Here Be Monsters podcast noted, pest control companies that use dogs to find bedbugs have to maintain a home colony for training purposes and sometimes find it easier to feed the bugs off of themselves.

Pereira says its not as bad as it sounds. The bugs are kept in Petri dishes covered with a penetrable plastic, so the bugs cant escape. And for many people, the bite is imperceptible -- less annoying than a mosquito.

UF Graduate assistant Heather Erskine demonstrates, placing a single bug on her hand and allowing it to feed. I honestly dont feel it, she notes. If you blindfolded me and said you put a bedbug on me, I wouldnt be able to tell you where.

For Campbell, bedbug bites are more painful, creating visible welts. Its almost like getting pricked by a needle, or getting a shot or something, she says. I can really feel their mouth parts.

For people battling infestations, discomfort is just part of it. Treatment can be expensive about $1,000 or more. And the bugs can take a mental toll, causing anxiety, depression, even Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I get phone calls from people telling me about their anxieties, says Campbell. I am unfortunately an entomologist; I dont deal with psychology. So I just try to calm them down, so they dont do anything irrational. I tell them to seek professional help.

Such problems are part of the reason Koehler says pest control revenues in Florida now dwarf the citrus industry. Theyre also the reason a harmless bedtime wish has resurfaced as a more sinister warning.

Theyre back. They should be saying that: Dont let the bedbugs bite.
