While on vacation at Atlantis Paradise Resort Bahamas, a well known five star resort, Cindi Avila from Florida has reported being bitten by hundreds of bed bugs. Avila realised that she was being bitten while in bed and decided to lift up the mattress, only to find hundreds of bed bugs hiding underneath. She has since filed a lawsuit against the luxury resort seeking a $15,000 settlement for all the pain and agony that was bestowed upon her. Avila says that she never thought she would find such an extreme bed bug infestation in a reputable five star resort like Atlantis. This just goes to show that bed bugs can be found in all places, no matter how luxurious and clean it may look.
The Toronto City Council meeting this week had some very interesting points relating to social issues, especially regarding residents who have experienced a bed bug infestation. Since bed bugs have been a progressing issue in Toronto over the past several years, city council has decided to provide even more help to residents that have to deal with these nasty pests. This help will be added to the Housing Stabilization Fund, which is an emergency housing benefit for people on social assistance. The assistance comes in the form of helping people on social assistance who are dealing with bed bug infestations to more easily access money that will be used to replace soft furniture including beds so that they can return quickly to a normal lifestyle after having their home treated for bed bugs.
A long time resident of Midland Ontario, near Toronto, recently had bed bugs invade her home, most likely as a result of bringing a used sofa into her apartment. Exterminators were brought in the day after the infestation was reported to prevent them from spreading to other units in the building. Lori Holmes, who works with the Simcoe Muskoka District House Unit, reassured reporters that bed bugs do not pose any serious health risks, which she believes is very important for people to keep in mind. Holmes also mentioned that the first thing anyone should do when they think they have a bed bug infestation is call in a professional bed bug exterminator so that they can be properly identified and dealt with.
The lost and found office at the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) was shut down on the morning of Oct 5 due to a bed bug sighting. Susan Sperling, spokesman for the TTC told the Toronto Sun We opened a package with a jacket that had bed bugs and we decided to fumigate as a precautionary measure. Within 4 hours of finding the bed bug infested jacket, the office was treated by a professional bed bug exterminator and remained closed for 72 hours for the safety of the employees that work at the office. Sperling also mentioned that whenever they receive a bed bug report on one of the transit cars, the vehicle is thoroughly treated immediately to alleviate the threat of bed bugs spreading to other cars.

Bed bugs feed on blood
They emerge from hiding places at night to seek their meal.
As a survival instinct, bed bugs are elusive. They know to stay out of view during the daytime, hiding in mattress crevices, box springs, baseboards, behind electrical switch-plates, in picture frames, and even behind wallpaper. But at night time, the carbon dioxide we exhale often tempts them out of their hiding spots.
Bed bugs can exist for extended periods of time without food. Adults can survive up to one year without feeding.
Females can lay up to 200 eggs in their lifetime at rates of up to five per day when food is abundant.
Eggs are attached to surfaces in cracks and crevices with cement produced by the females.
Bed bugs are usually found within 4-8 feet of food source and generally are more horizontally mobile than vertically so they will look for hiding places at same level as food source.
Bed bugs are transported in furniture, luggage, boxes, suitcases and packed clothing. CLICK THIS NUMBER NOW!!

Does Bleach Kill Bed Bugs? – SniffK9s: Bed Bug Dogs and …
Does bleach kill bed bugs? Sure. Is it the smartest solution? Probably not. Bleach is a multi-purpose disinfectant and sanitizer. Adding water to bleach and spreading it along bed bug hot spots such as baseboards and other possible bed bug hovels will deter bed bugs and possibly kill any that come in contact with the chemical mixture. However, there are more practical solutions out there.
There are more ways in which bleach can be harmful to your lungs and skin than ways in which it can be useful for killing bed bugs. While direct contact with the chemical is deadly to the bugs, bleaching your furniture may harm the fabric and your familys health. Dishwashing soap can also be mixed with water and applied to cracks and crevices where bed bugs may be hiding. But just like with bleach, you wouldnt want it on your furniture, much less where you sleep.
A safer, powder-based approach is diatomaceous earth. Food grade DE is non-toxic and is even fed in small quantities to farm animals to ward off parasites. The majority of DE is made of silica, the same material that makes up glass. Carefully laid out DE is akin to scattered, ultra-sharp shards of glass through which bed bugs walk and can get fatal lacerations.
The downside to this is that laying out DE is a somewhat meticulous, time-consuming process best left to those knowledgeable about the substance. Piling on DE against your baseboards and on your furniture will simply make bed bugs avoid the large pile of razor-sharp particles. If, however, it is applied carefully and in select quantities to key locations, including your mattress, DE can be a useful mitigation agent. It will also be far safer to breathe in (in small quantities) than bleach or dishwashing soap.
So, does bleach kill bed bugs? Yes. A bleach mixture, if laid out in all the areas where bed bugs might be hiding, will certainly kill off some bed bugs. However, that much bleach will most likely be detrimental to the air you breathe. DE, on the other hand, is a healthier and equally effective bed bug killing agent.
Be aware, though, that both substances only mitigate a bed bug problem. More proactive measures have to be taken: washing clothes, steaming furniture, sealing items, and ultimately, a complete solution like a full-on heat treatment. According to Sniff K9s FAQ page, bed bugs cannot withstand temperatures of 122 degrees Fahrenheit or more.
While food grade DE and bleach do work at deterring and killing individual bed bugs, only a complete bed bug solution, like a professional heat treatment, can guarantee the extermination of all bed bugs in a home. Remember: Only one egg is required to start an infestation, so eradicating a handful of bed bugs simply wont solve the problem of an infestation. If you are unsure whether you have bed bugs or the level of the infestation present, its best to call a professional for an inspection.

Lithgow Public Library closed Wednesday because of bedbug problem – Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel
AUGUSTA The discovery of one bedbug shut down Lithgow Public Library all day Wednesday.
Augusta City Manager William Bridgeo said a bedbug-sniffing dog indicated the presence of a bedbug by sitting down in front of a stack of large-print books directly across from the circulation desk.
The problem is that if it was in a room, they could shut the door and then deal with it, he said, but the central location forced the closure of the building.
Bridgeo said the area was sprayed and the library will be open as usual Thursday with one small area cordoned off.
In all likelihood, somebody returned a book and it had a bedbug in it, Bridgeo said. A couple months ago one was found in a DVD case that had been returned, and a couple months earlier there was a hit on furniture.
The city has a contract with Merrills Detector Dog Services, of Readfield, for monthly sweeps by specially trained dogs of three buildings City Center, the Buker Community Center and Lithgow Public Library to search for signs of bedbugs, which have been a pest for the city in recent years. The blood-sucking bugs usually come out at night or in dark areas, and adults are brown and about one-quarter of an inch long.
By virtue of diligently monitoring for it, weve been able to prevent any serious problems, Bridgeo said Wednesday. We consider it to be money very well spent.
The city pays $125 monthly and more if treatments have to be applied.
Betsy Pohl, of the library director, said the Lithgow staff didnt initially know the full extent of the problem.
It was one very small area and we saw no bug, but the dog indicated there was an issue there, so we contacted the pest control person to come in to treat it, Pohl said. We decided to keep the library closed while the spray was drying, since its in the heart of the library, right across from the circulation desk.
During the day, a sign at the librarys entrance and a post on its Facebook page informed visitors it was closed because of a facility issue and apologized for the inconvenience.
The library, which initially opened in 1896, underwent a $11 million renovation and expansion project and reopened at its 45 Winthrop St. location in August 2016.
Pohl said she wished more institutions would take the same approach as the city of Augusta did to the bedbug situation and she was proud of the city for being so proactive.
Its a commitment to staying on top of this problem, which is not limited to libraries, she said. Its a problem in five-star hotels, and in residences. Theyre bugs theyre opportunistic. Im pleased we have this protocol.
