Youngstown news, Contract approved for bed-bug treatment – Youngstown Vindicator

Published: Thu, February 16, 2017 @ 9:59 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN

The board of commissioners of the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority has approved a contract with a pest-control company for bed-bug treatment in its buildings.

The one-year agreement with Bug Patrol of Ohio LLC of Columbus, which the board approved Thursday, begins April 1 in an amount not to exceed $30,000, with three one-year renewal options under those terms.

About 60 of the authoritys more than 1,200 apartments have required bed-bug treatment over the past year, most of them in high-rise buildings, said Jim Winston, the authoritys director of operations.

The high rises may be more susceptible to bed-bug transmission because of their concentration of apartments close to each other and because of their common areas, such as community rooms, he said.

I just wish we didnt have to deal with them. Thats unfortunate that people have to deal with bugs biting them. I dont like people dealing with that, so we do address these immediately, Winston said of bed-bug complaints.

When bed bugs are found in an apartment, that apartment and the apartments on either side of it and above and below it need to be treated, he said.

Winston said YMHA likely spent more than $30,000 on bed-bug treatment last year.

The cost is outrageous, Winston said. However, he added: We are reducing the cost, just by education and awareness, including information presented at resident council meetings.

Its something that comes and goes. We get like a rash of them [bed-bug complaints], but our biggest challenge is: People are not reporting to us. Then it gets a little out of control, Winston said of the bed-bug problem.

People dont want to admit that they have bed bugs. ... People are ashamed, so our challenge is, one, getting it reported in time, and two is educating the residents concerning bed-bug identification and prevention and remediation strategies, he said.

The authority does not charge its residents for bed-bug treatments, but it does not reimburse them for furnishings and other belongings that must be discarded due to bed-bug infestation, Winston said.

In other action, the board adopted a resolution and renamed its meeting room at Amedia Plaza in honor of Carmelita Douglas, its executive director, who will retire Feb. 28.

I am really grateful for the 23 years of service that I have spent with YMHAs family, and we are a family, Douglas told the board Thursday during her last board meeting as executive director.

Jason Whitehead, the authoritys deputy executive director, will succeed Douglas.

Bed bugs found at another DC elementary school – Story | WTTG – FOX 5 DC

WASHINGTON - Bed bugs have popped up at another D.C. elementary school. This time, Miner Elementary School in Northeast D.C. is being affected by the pests.

This comes after about a bed bug and rodent problem at Savoy Elementary School caused D.C. Public Schools to close the school last week and temporarily relocate the students for cleaning of the building.

A D.C. Public Schools spokesperson said there were three instances that happened on Feb. 9, 14, and 15 where bed bugs were found students' clothing at Miner Elementary. The school district does not believe there is a widespread problem of bed bugs at the school. At this point, the school has not been shut down.

D.C. Public Schools spokesperson Michelle Lerner said in a statement:

"We are actively communicating with families and school staff about the three incidents (Feb. 9, Feb. 14, and Feb. 15) of bed bugs found on individuals at Miner Elementary. School staff immediately reported all incidents of bed bugs found and custodians are verifying that the spots around the incidents dont require further cleaning. Today, the DCPS operations and wellness teams met with staff at Miner Elementary to go over the protocol for identifying and reporting potential pests."

"Were continuing to monitor the situation, but we dont believe that this is a widespread infestation."

Miner Elementary School principal Andrea Mial sent home this letter to families:

"Dear Miner Elementary School Community,

"Here at Miner Elementary School, it is my priority to ensure that all students and staff are safe and the school environment is conducive to teaching and learning. To keep you informed on how we are doing this on an ongoing basis, I want to share an update regarding routine maintenance and cleaning at our school.

"Throughout the year, DC Public Schools (DCPS) proactively works with the Department of General Services (DGS) to prevent and treat any potential threat of pests (rodents, bugs, etc.) at all schools. DCPS and DGS work with school staff to identify the location of potential pests, complete a thorough inspection for entry points, fix any structural issues which may be a contributing factor, and bring in pest control services, including exterminators, if necessary. On a daily basis, the school custodian team is also committed to ensuring the building is thoroughly cleaned and free of unwanted waste that may attract pests.

"We follow strict protocols when any pest is identified here. First, we immediately confirm the details of the sighting. For example: what was seen, when it was seen, and in what area of the school. Then, our custodial foreman will evaluate the area and complete necessary cleaning and maintenance. If necessary, we will schedule pest control services to treat any particular area or location. Finally, if multiple exterminations are required, a broader communication to families via letter, email, and ConnectEd/Robo is disseminated.

"If the pest identified is a bed bug or lice, or another insect, it is the school nurse's role to identify, notify, and educate affected students, parents, and staff on next steps and available resources. Please note, students are not excluded from school for bed bugs or lice.

"As we continue to monitor the school with our agency partners, and conduct routine maintenance and cleaning, the entire school community plays a role in keeping our school building clean and safe. From properly disposing of all trash and unwanted food to keeping food limited to designated eating areas, we can together reduce the likelihood of unwanted pests. We want to thank you for keeping our school building clean and safe for all.

"Please reach out to me directly if you have any questions or if youd like to report an issue in the school building or any concerns regarding your childs well-being."

However, FOX 5 was contacted by staff members from Miner who believe bed bugs are a big problem there. They said the school has had a bed bug issue since January. On Thursday night, FOX 5 did see a pest control service vehicle parked in the parking lot at Miner.

Since news came out Thursday about the bed bugs at Miner, a concerned parent contacted FOX 5 saying a staff member at Stanton Elementary School in Northeast told them there was bed bug issue as well. We reached out to D.C. Public Schools about this, but they would not confirm if there was a case of bed begs at that school.

On Thursday, Savoy Elementary School said it will reopen on Feb. 27 after thorough cleaning and installation of new carpeting at the school.

What Can Yale Do For You?

Bed Bugs are excellent hitchhikers, and are capable of traveling long distances with an unsuspecting host. Experts believe that recent bed bugs increases in the U.S. may be due to more travel, the prevalence of mass transit, lack of knowledge about prevention, increased resistance to pesticides, and ineffective control practices. These bugs have been found in airplane seats, trains, cabs, and hotel rooms.

Bed Bugs commonly travel in luggage, backpacks, and even in clothing. Once a Bug has hitched a ride, its destination could be anywhere, including health care facilities, public transportation, and private homes. Infestations can be spread by a visiting friend, or by even by a domestic help worker. Often a domestic worker may have a visiting relative that will carry the pest from another county. The bed bug infestation can follow you on clothing or belongings to any destination.

Often the exact source of the infestation is unknown. Once in the home, bed bugs will seek small, protected areas to hide. Although called bed bugs, they can live in almost any area of the home such as beds, couches, picture frames, night stands, wall voids, under carpeting, or virtually any available small crack or crevice. However, they will most likely try to live very close to where people sleep. Only highly trained professionals can correctly identify and treat all of these potential harborages. Bed bugs are nocturnal insects and therefore usually hide during the day and are most active at night when they leave their harborages to seek a blood meal. Bed bug bites are essentially painless and often go unnoticed while the bugs are feeding. Bed bugs mature quickly, lay hundreds of eggs, and can live almost a year. Therefore, infestations can grow rapidly and persist indefinitely until proper corrective actions are taken.

Bed bugs are small parasitic insects that feed on the blood or animals. The adults have a reddish-brown color with oval-shaped bodies that are about inch in length. Eggs are laid by the females, in batches of about 5 per day. As they hatch they are about the size of a poppy seed but in about 30 to 60 days the newborn bed bugs will be grown and ready to lay their own eggs. These eggs are small, approximately 1mm in size and whitish in color, and this makes them very had to find. Bed Bugs are not known to carry or transmit diseases to humans, but their bites can cause skin irritation. Though many people have no reaction to Bed Bug bites, some experience small red welts that often appear in a line or cluster and may be itchy or painful. Serious health problems can occur if the bites become infected.

Dont worry, we will solve your bed bug problem quickly and in a cost effective manner. We are bed bug specialists. Our company has successfully eliminated bed bugs and other pests from thousands of homes, motels, hotels, restaurants, offices, and more. After a review of your situation, we can usually guarantee immediate results and provide service in a customer friendly and understanding manner.

Sniffing dogs help get rid of bed bugs – The Daily Courier

For anyone who has dealt with the irritating bites of bedbugs, that cute little rhyme about not letting the bedbugs bite is anything but cute. Theyre tiny, hide most of the time, and come out only to feed at night, generally on human blood.

Chances are, you heard little about them until perhaps a decade ago. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a joint statement in 2010 that said, Although bedbug populations dropped dramatically during the mid-20th century, the United States is one of many countries now experiencing an alarming resurgence in the population of bedbugs.

Though the exact cause is not known, experts suspect the resurgence is associated with increased resistance of bedbugs to available pesticides, greater international and domestic travel, lack of knowledge regarding control of bedbugs, the statement said.

The good news is that bedbugs can be exterminated, and, once gone, will stay gone unless theyre re-introduced into the home.

Bedbugs (cimex lectularius)

Bedbugs, contrary to some myths, are not necessarily a sign of a dirty or unsanitary home.

Youd be surprised where you can pick up bedbugs. You can bring bedbugs home from a movie theater, they come home from the library, you can bring bedbugs home from a hotel, said Cecil Newell at Yavapai County Community Health Services. They like to hitchhike.

Once in a home, they will bite their victimmostly at nightdrink until full, and then go into hiding in very tiny cracks and crevasses.

The good news, according to the CDC, is that they dont transmit or spread disease, although some people can be allergic to their bites.

Preventing an infestation can be difficult. Although theyre small, and can be seen, most people arent likely to notice them until they wake up with itchy bites.

What doesnt work

Pesticides, whether theyre the spray can variety or the bug bomb, dont work.

The bedbugs simply retreat further into their hiding places until the application is over and the poison subsides.

Another treatment involves the use of diatomaceous earth (DE), which does kill the bedbugs. However, several sources, including the EPA, point out that diatomaceous earth is a hazard to the human respiratory system, and advise against both pool-grade and food-grade DE use.

What does work

The best treatment for bedbugs is heat, but that needs to be done by a professional, Newell said.

Locally, AZEX Pest Solutions does use heat to eliminate bedbugs, said Sonny Henegar, who heads up the K9 program and says it works very well.

The company uses dogs to identify whether a location has a bedbug infestation; the dogs are trained to sniff out their distinctive odor and alert to show the handler exactly where bedbugs are hiding.

The bedbugs live in places that you cant spray chemicals, he said. They live in books, they lie in pillowcases.

But his company heats up a room to about 130 degrees to kill the critters.

How it works is ingenious: the heat is slowly increased over hours time, Henegar said, and like the story of the frog that sat in a pan on water while the water was heated to boiling, the bugs dont seem to realize theyre in trouble until its too late.

This method also has the advantage of killing the bedbugs, not driving them away, only to return. The idea behind our heaters is, because its a low heat, they dont leave the room, he said.

AZEX is now teaching pest control companies from around the U.S. how to deal with bedbugs at its facility in Prescott, Henegar said. We teach them how to use heat to eradicate bedbugs.

Bedbug exterminators are doing a booming business these days.

(Bedbugs) are everywhere, he said.

Bed Bugs Found at Second DC Elementary School | NBC4 … – NBC4 Washington

Another D.C. elementary school is dealing with bed bugs not long after a school in Southeast had to shut its doors because of an infestation.

Bed bugs were found on people three different times this month at Miner Elementary School in Northeast, D.C. Public Schools officials said. It is not known if the bugs were found on students.

"Were continuing to monitor the situation, but we dont believe that this is a widespread infestation," said a spokesperson for DCPS.

The DCPS operations and wellness teams met with staff at the school on Wednesday to go over protocols for identifying and reporting potential pests, the spokesperson said.

In early February, DCPS closed Savoy Elementary School in Southeast after rodents and bed bugs were discovered at the school. Savoy students have been going to class at a temporary location while officials handle the infestation issue.

Miner Elementary School students brought home the following letter to their parents Wednesday:
