Once just a catchy bedtime phrase, Dont let the bed bugs bite is taking on a new urgency as this pesky blood-sucking nighttime bug is making a comeback in the U.S.

According to reports from http://www.michigan.gov, pest control company Orkin says more people are now being affected by bed bugs in the U.S. than ever before. Nearly all pest professionals nationwide have treated bed bugs in the past year.

Youre also more likely to find bed bugs at home than at a hotel. The top three places where pest professionals report finding bed bugs are apartments and condominiums (95 percent), single-family homes (93 percent) and hotels/motels (75 percent). Theyre also found in nursing homes, college dorms, offices, schools and daycare centers, hospitals, public transportation and more.

Its a major problem for multi-family housing and hotels and motels, said Gary Offenbacher, a property manager in southeast Michigan, who was part of a Bed Bug Task Force for the state of Michigan.

Detroit has been named No. 7 on the most bed bug infested city in the U.S. list, along with Grand Rapids-Battle Creek-Kalamazoo at No. 29.

Thats the bad news. The good news is that bed bugs dont carry diseases, and they are very treatable, according to Offenbacher.

Bed bugs are small, brownish, flattened insects that feed on the blood of people where they sleep. All they eat is blood, said Offenbacher. Getting rid of them is all about isolating them from their host.

Normally they are brought into a home or facility in furniture, household objects or luggage. Once they have established themselves in a home, they can be difficult and costly to get rid of.

Theyre not known to transmit diseases, but are considered a nuisance or vermin, and therefore a public health concern, according to Michigan.gov/emergingdiseases.

Theyre like head lice, said Offenbacher. People freak out about it, but its very treatable. Theres no need to be embarrassed. Being sanitary has nothing to do with it.

Bed bugs can be difficult to detect because of their small size and ability to survive up to a year without feeding. Theyre about the size of an apple seed when fully grown and can easily hide around the seams of a mattress, behind headboards and in cracks and crevices, usually within a 5-foot radius of the bed.

The first signs of a bed bug infestation are often the bed bugs themselves, or small dark stains bed bugs can leave behind.

Its important to check for signs of bed bugs regularly, and make this check part of your regular sheet-changing routine.

If you find or suspect you have bed bugs in your home or on your mattress, it is recommended that you call a pest management professional. For do-it-yourself eradication methods, check Michigan.gov/emergingdiseases.

To help detect and

prevent bed bugs . . .

Inspect your home for signs of bed bugs regularly. Check where they hide during the day, including mattress seams and behind baseboards, headboards, electrical outlets and picture frames.

Decrease clutter around your home to make bed bug inspections and detection much easier.

Inspect all secondhand furniture before bringing it inside your home.

Dry potentially infested bed linens, curtains and stuffed animals on the hottest temperature allowed for the fabric.

When you travel, remember the acronym, SLEEP:

S Survey the hotel room for signs of an infestation. Look for black or brown spots on any furniture.

L Lift and look in bed bug hiding spots: the mattress, box spring, bed skirt and other furniture, as well as behind baseboards, pictures and even torn wallpaper.

E Elevate luggage away from the bed and wall. The safest place is in the bathroom.

E Examine your luggage while repacking and once you return home from a trip.

P Place all dryer-safe clothing from your luggage into the dryer for at least 15 minutes at the highest setting after you return home.

Topeka VA continues efforts to eradicate bed bugs – WIBW

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Topeka's veterans' hospital ensures people it is a sanitary environment, even as it continues taking steps to treat and monitor ongoing issues with bed bugs.

Officials with the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System updated the situation for 13 NEWS after a viewer contacted the television newsroom, concerned bed bugs remained in the VA's Building 4, also known as 41B.

VA spokesperson Joseph Burks confirmed staff and patients from the psychiatric recovery and wellness program on the building's first floor were relocated earlier this week so crews could do a heat treatment.

"Heat treatment, which does cost more than a chemical treatment, was the choice to eradicate the bed bugs on 41B and that action was completed," Burks said. "Heat penetrates into small crevices that cannot be inspected."

Burks said chemical treatments also were utilized in some areas.

"Since the completion of this entire eradication process, our environmental management office, along with the exterminating company, Smithereens, out of Kansas City, Missouri, have thoroughly inspected the entire building and have found no sighting of additional bed bugs," he said.

However, since patients and staff are already temporarily relocated, Burks said the VA decided to go ahead with needed remodeling projects. They expect the unit will be operational and patients and staff returned by the end of March.

The viewer who contacted 13 NEWS also expressed concerns employees are being made to treat their homes for bed bugs at their own expense.

Burks said no one in executive leadership has issued any such instructions.

"If an employee is required to clean their home based on a work related incident, there are procedures they may follow," Burks said. "We are currently seeking guidance from our legal team on how to address this issue."

We at VA Eastern Kansas take patient and employee safety and a healthy healing environment for our veterans very seriously. For the safety of all, only staff and patients from the psychiatric recovery and wellness program (PRWP) were moved in preparation for treatment that took place early this week. This unit is located on the first floor of bldg. 4 (41B) and no other staff or patients from the building were relocated. Heat treatment, which does cost more than a chemical treatment, was the choice to eradicate the bed bugs on 41B and that action was completed. Heat penetrates into small crevices that cannot be inspected. Lethal temperatures for bed bugs range from 117 degrees Fahrenheit to 122 F. In addition to heat were the bugs were spotted, chemical treatment was utilized in other areas of building 4. Our facility leadership ensures treatment options are in accordance with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. Since the completion of this entire eradication process, our environmental management office, along with the exterminating company, Smithereens, out of Kansas City, Missouri, have thoroughly inspected the entire building and have found no sighting of additional bed bugs. With patients and staff from 41B being temporarily relocated to another unit in building 2, we took advantage of this temporary move and have initiated a few much needed remodeling projects. Though I cannot provide an exact date, we expect the unit to be operational with patients and staff back in place before the end of March.

If an employee is required to clean their home based on a work related incident, there are procedures they may follow. No one in an executive leadership role has instructed any employee to clean their home at their own expense. We are currently seeking guidance from our legal team on how to address this issue.

Bed bugs can be found in other settings such as nursing homes, college dorms, offices, schools and daycare centers, hospitals, public transportation and others. An individual most often transports bed bugs from one of these locations to another.

Despite the availability of information, most Americans still have misconceptions about bed bugs. Many believe that bed bugs transmit disease. However, research conducted to date has shown that bed bugs do not transmit disease to their human victims, although some people may experience itchy, red welts. Many believe bed bugs are more common among lower income households and believe bed bugs are attracted to dirty homes. Bed bugs do not discriminate in regard to household income and are found in both sanitary and unsanitary conditions. Our hospital is a sanitary environment and we act on any calls whether it be suspected or confirmed.

Officials: No bedbug infestation at Nanticoke High School – Wilkes Barre Times-Leader

NANTICOKE Officials at the Nanticoke School District say that, despite rumors circulating among parents, there is no bedbug infestation at the high school.

The Times Leader received several tips about a potential infestation at the Greater Nanticoke Area High School.

Officials, however, maintain that only a single bedbug was found inside the building.

Building and Grounds Director Frank Grevera said an insect was found in a classroom on Tuesday. It was taken away, and determined to be a bedbug.

An exterminator came to the school at 5 p.m. Tuesday and sprayed the room. Grevera added that as a precaution, desks and all areas within the room were also sprayed.

When asked if there was an infestation, Grevera replied absolutely not.

We didnt even see one of them from that point, he said. It was not known how the bedbug made it into the school. It could have come from absolutely anybody. We have no idea where it came from.

Grevera stressed that bedbugs have not been reported in any other classrooms in the high school.

Rich Colwell, owner of Colwell Termite & Pest Control in Wilkes-Barre, said the sighting of one bedbug is not reason for concern.

Finding one sporadically and not finding anything else is no reason for concern whatsoever, he said. It could be a reason to start monitoring, but that would be about it.

In a voice note sent to parents Wednesday, superintendent Ronald Grevera cited posts on social media that have caused a lot of havoc and problems at the high school as a result of the incident.

There is no need for concern, and there is no reason for parents to pull kids out of school this afternoon (Wednesday) contrary to many of the text messages and phone calls they may be getting from students, Grevera said in the note.
