Home Bed Bugs Preventing Bed Bugs While Travelling
Everyone knows the saying, Good night, sleep tight, dont let the bed bugs bite. It has never been more true than it is now.
Bed bugs are extremely efficient hitch hikers. They can move easily across a room and climb onto luggage or anything left on a bed in just one night. Hotels are perfect homes for bed bugs because of the ready supply of fresh hosts to feed on, and the difficulty of sustaining bed bug control in such facilities over the long-term.
Upon arrival always inspect your hotel room. Travellers should look for live insects, blood stains, dead bugs and eggs throughout the room. Bed bugs are not a sanitation or cleanliness issue. This means bed bugs can be found in any hotel or motel from a one-star all the way up to a five-star location. What signs should you look for? With any large infestation of bed bugs you will notice a sweet, musty, odour, similar to soda pop syrup. Bed bugs will leave small brown or red spots on the sheets.
Bed bugs usually hide in close proximity to their food source you! Bed bugs are nocturnal insects and disappear into the crevices of mattresses (pay particular attention to the seams and crevasses), box springs, sheets, furniture, upholstery and hollow bedposts during the day. Other hiding spots include behind baseboards or pictures and even in any wallpaper that might be cracked or torn. You can lift and look around all these possible hiding spots in order to check for bed bugs in a hotel room.
Make sure to elevate your luggage and any other personal items. Always inspect the luggage rack carefully for any signs of bed bugs. If it appears free of bed bug signs use it to keep your suitcase off the floor and away from the bed. Moving the luggage rack away from the wall will help reduce the risk of bed bugs crawling up the wall and into your belongings.
When you are packing to check out always examine your luggage to make sure you have not picked up any unwelcome guests. Since bed bugs are such great hitch hikers be sure to check your luggage and clothing upon your return home. Many recommend unpacking and checking in your garage or utility room.
When you return home, leave your luggage in the garage, and immediately launder all cloth items. The first places bed bugs typically encounter are bags and suitcases so keeping your luggage outside may help keep them out of your home. Depending on where you live, keeping luggage outdoors may also leave bed bugs outside their comfortable range of temperatures. You can also eliminate bed bugs that may have gotten into clothing by laundering (washing and drying) all fabric items in hot water, although recent studies show that 20 minutes in a clothes dryer is all that is needed to ensure 100% control.
Efficiently treating and detecting for a bed bug infestation requires the use of a licensed, professional Pest Control Operator with specific experience dealing with these pests. No one has more experience than Orkin Canada so call today and schedule a bed bug inspection.

Times Leader | Officials: No bedbug infestation at Nanticoke High … – Wilkes Barre Times-Leader
NANTICOKE Officials at the Nanticoke School District say that, despite rumors circulating among parents, there is no bedbug infestation at the high school.
The Times Leader received several tips about a potential infestation at the Greater Nanticoke Area High School.
Officials, however, maintain that only a single bedbug was found inside the building.
Building and Grounds Director Frank Grevera said an insect was found in a classroom on Tuesday. It was taken away, and determined to be a bedbug.
An exterminator came to the school at 5 p.m. Tuesday and sprayed the room. Grevera added that as a precaution, desks and all areas within the room were also sprayed.
When asked if there was an infestation, Grevera replied absolutely not.
We didnt even see one of them from that point, he said. It was not known how the bedbug made it into the school. It could have come from absolutely anybody. We have no idea where it came from.
Grevera stressed that bedbugs have not been reported in any other classrooms in the high school.
Rich Colwell, owner of Colwell Termite & Pest Control in Wilkes-Barre, said the sighting of one bedbug is not reason for concern.
Finding one sporadically and not finding anything else is no reason for concern whatsoever, he said. It could be a reason to start monitoring, but that would be about it.
In a voice note sent to parents Wednesday, superintendent Ronald Grevera cited posts on social media that have caused a lot of havoc and problems at the high school as a result of the incident.
There is no need for concern, and there is no reason for parents to pull kids out of school this afternoon (Wednesday) contrary to many of the text messages and phone calls they may be getting from students, Grevera said in the note.

How to avoid bringing bedbugs back from vacation – KelownaNow
When escaping to the sun this winter, youre probably expecting to come back with a tan, not bedbugs.
According to Health Canada, bedbugs bite people while they sleep and feed on their blood, usually causing minor skin reactions. In rare cases, it can lead to severe allergic reactions.
Before leaving for vacation, travellers are urged to learn how to spot bedbugs and avoid bringing them home in their luggage, clothing and other personal items.
Bedbugs are brown and have small, flat, oval shaped bodies that are similar in appearance to an apple seed. In advance, you should do your research and learn how to spot them.
When youre on the trip, you should check your hotel room before you unpack. If you find signs of bedbugs, you can notify the front desk and ask for another room, or stay somewhere else. If you change rooms in the same hotel, make sure your new room is not next to the possibly infested room.
Bedbugs can hide in many places, like under wallpaper, behind picture frames, in electrical outlets, inside box springs, in mattress pads and in night tables, so make sure to check everywhere.
Bedbug fighting tips:
When you return home, carefully check your luggage and all of its contents. It is also a good idea to wash and dry all clothing and fabric items at a high temperature after you get back, to help kill any bedbugs you may have picked up.

Bed Bugs in Clothing – Orkin.com
Question: So I had the Orkin Man to my apartment on Saturday and they determined we have bed bugs. I am currently scheduling an appointment to have this problem taken care of. I have followed the preparation sheet but there is no information concerning the clothes in the bedroom. I was told to move everything away from walls and vacuum and to box up any clutter. What do I do with the clothes?? Do they remain in the room? And if so should they be boxed/bagged?? Or do I remove them from the room?
Answer: To reduce the potential for bed bug infested clothes re-infesting the room, it is best if you remove the clothes and wash them all or have them dry cleaned. If washing, be sure to use hot water and high heat in the dryer.
Question: I have bed bugs! I dont believe I have an infestation, and my furniture and apartment have been sprayed multiple times, but I am throwing much of my furniture out anyway, and moving out.
My question is thisI need to wash all of my clothing so that I can take them with me without the risk of bringing the bed bugs. How can I do that? I know they need very hot water. Will a normal wash and dry at a laundromat do? Is there any way to treat (spray, fumigate) the clothes before washing them?
ANSWER: Regular washing and drying of the clothes at high temperatures will be fine, no treatment of clothing is needed.
