Bed Bugs at Local Resort? – PA home page
POCONO TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - A family says a fun weekend at a Pocono resort ended in an itchy nightmare. A woman claims after staying at Great Wolf Lodge, her kids woke up covered in bed bug bites.
The photos of kids blanketed in bites got thousands of shares on Facebook.
The poster is a mother named Lynn Rosenberg from from Brooklyn, New York. According to the post, her kids woke up with bites that her doctor later confirmed were from bed bugs.
Lynn goes on to write, Great Wolf decontaminated their belongings using a special machine. Inside the bag those belongings were placed in, Lynn claims she found dead bugs.
After getting 11,000 shares on the post, Rosenberg has removed it from the internet. Great Wolf says the issue has been 'resolved'.
Great Wolf Lodge provided Eyewitness News with a statement reading in part: "We followed our prevention protocol...relocating the guests to a different room, treating their belongings, and bringing in a third-party inspector to evaluate the room. The inspection did not reveal any presence of bed bugs".
"They're attracted to human scent, the warmth, and they feed on human blood," says Dr. Jean-Paul Romes of Pocono Urgent Care.
Dr. Jean-Paul Romes says when bed bugs aren't feeding at night, they hide in pillow and mattress seams, carpets, even inside outlets.
"You can see them most of the time if you're looking," he explains.
Romes isn't surprised to hear the resort may have bed bugs. He says they're common at hotels, or places with travels and beds.
"People think oh its unclean or they don't take care of the place. No, unfortunately the person who came and stayed last night could have brought them," Romes reveals.
The next time you travel overnight, Romes suggests carefully inspecting mattresses and sheets.
At home, he suggests carefully vacuuming carpets and keeping rooms clutter-free. If you find bed bugs, wash all belonging in hot water.
People can document their experiences with bedbugs in public places by using a website called 'The Bedbug Registry. Since 2011, several users allege to have spotted the pests or woke up with bites after staying at Great Wolf Lodge in Pocono Township.
The site has a disclaimer stating that because the reports come directly from the user, they cannot guarantee accuracy.

Experts offer tips to avoid bedbugs during spring break travel – WWMT-TV
Experts offer tips to avoid bedbugs during spring break travel
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It's spring break for most West Michigan schools, which means many people will be traveling and staying in hotels.
It also means it's prime bedbugs season.
But experts say there are some things you can do to protect your family from them.
The sight of bed bugs is enough to put a damper on your vacation, and the bites can cause a variety of symptoms.
Travel experts say a few simple steps when you first check in to a hotel can save you a headache.
They recommend that you immediately check the sheets, mattress and box spring for any signs of bed bugs.
Look for dark, rust colored spots and exoskeletons--the casings the bugs leave behind.
Don't forget to look at the head of the bed and in, around and behind the headboard, too. And be sure to lift and check under the mattress.
It might sound extreme, but to be safe, they recommend putting your luggage in the bathroom as soon as you enter the hotel room.
"Bedbugs prefer anything dark and creviced that they can hide in, like bedding, seams of fabric, furniture, even inside walls, so the bathroom is usually the safe zone while you search the room for signs of critters," said Dan DiClerico, with Consumer Reports.
Even if your room is clear, Consumer Reports says it's a good idea to keep your luggage and clothes on off the floor and on a hard surface or luggage rack, clear of any potential bedbug zones.
And always bring any concerns to the hotel management.

Landlord Responsibility for Bed Bugs | Nolo.com
How to handle a bed bug problem in your rental unit.
Bed bug problem? It happens to even the best of apartments. Bed bugs can catch a ride in your suitcase or used furniture (beware of second hand mattresses!) or on your clothing. The critters can even travel from another apartment in your building. If youre not sure if you have bed bugs (maybe its fleas from your dog?), check out the article How to Identify a Bed Bug Infestation by a Virginia Tech professor. And if you really want to know everything about bed bugs, check out the website BedBugCentral and see the EPA Bed Bug Information section.
Heres how to deal with a bed bug infestation. (Hint: A can of Raid is not going to do the job.)
If you suspect bed bugs, contact your landlord or manager right away. Your landlord should bring in a qualified exterminator to inspect for and measure the concentration of bed bugs in your rental (and also adjoining units). Your landlord should give you proper notice of entry for the exterminators inspection.
Some states, such as Maine, have specific laws on the books covering landlord and tenant duties regarding bed bug infestations. See the website of the National Conference of State Legislatures for a list of state bed bug laws.
Try to get information beforehand what to expect from an inspection. Typically, a pest management professional will examine the main bed bug site (such as your mattress and bedding), as well as look closely into drawers, closets, and shelves. A professional will also box or map the source, and attempt to confirm where the bed bugs originated, and learn whether and how the problem has spread. Mapping the infestation may also help determine when a particular rental unit became infested, which the landlord may use to apportion financial responsibility for the extermination.
Exterminators usually recommend that tenants in bed bug-infested units take the following steps:
Keep in mind that if you dont follow the exterminators advice, and the bed bugs reappear, youll have to start the whole process all over again.
In keeping with their responsibility to provide habitable housing, landlords must pay to exterminate pests, such as bed bugs, that a tenant has not introduced. In some states such as Florida, this duty is explicit. But, determining who introduced the bed bugs (and who must foot the bill) is often very difficult in multi-unit buildings: Many tenants may be moving in and out, some may have recently traveled abroad and brought home bed bugs, and others may have picked up used furniture that contained bed bugs. As a result, landlords (under their insurance policies) often end up footing the bill for extermination and relocation costs in properties with several rental units. (If you rent a single-family home, especially if you are a long-term tenant, you may be more easily saddled with the cost because there wont be any other residents to turn to).
Depending on your situation, if your landlord fails to take care of a major bed bug problem, you may be able to withhold rent or use the repair and deduct remedy to cover costs such as extermination, break your lease and move out early, or even sue the landlord for damages. See the Nolo article Tenant Options if Your Landlord Wont Make Major Repairs for details on these options.
Eradicating bed bug infestations caused by the tenant, however, can be the tenants financial responsibility. If you are clearly the source of the bed bug problem, your renters insurance (if any) should cover the costs of moving out and replacing any ruined belongings.
Most tenants dont want to move into a rental unit that has problems such as flooding, and several states have laws requiring these types of landlord disclosures. For details on states that require landlord disclosure of bed bug problems, see the Nolo article, What Landlords Need to Tell Tenants About Bed Bugs in the Building .

Bed bugs trouble for hospitals across Iowa and US – KCRG
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- A Cedar Rapids woman recently found what appeared to be a bed bug at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
On April third, Kasie De Camp said she was sitting in a hospital room in the orthopedic area of UIHC.
"I started noticing out from under the table-- a bug crawling out from underneath, said De Camp. I got off the table, looked and I realized that it was a bed bug."
De Camp snapped a couple of photos of what she saw. Bug experts at Iowa State took a look at them and concluded her suspicion-- likely a bed bug or an extremely close relative, the bat bug, which can also give people those nasty bites.
"There was a lot in that room," said De Camp. "Along the baseboard, they're between the bed and the wall."
Bed bugs have been a growing problem at hospitals across the country. Every few years the National Pest Management Association tracks where pest control companies head most often. In the U.S., more than a third of companies responded to bed bug infestations at hospitals in 2015, that's up from 12% in 2010.
Officials say hospitals have three main sources:
-Emergencies, when people are picked up from their homes -Patients' clothing and personal items. -People visiting patients.
The issue was bad enough in Des Moines Polk County put out these guidelines to help hospitals prevent and manage infestations.
"I mean, you never know where they're going to show up," said De Camp.
She reported the sighting to hospital officials who put her to another room to be safe. De Camp said staff told her they sprayed the room with insecticide, then sealed it for three days.
UIHC sent KCRG-TV9 this statement about the incident:
"With thousands of people and hundreds of shipments arriving in our hospital every day, we understand there is a higher risk for this type of issue to occur We follow CDC recommendations to prevent and treat when bugs are suspected, and work closely with pest control experts."
