Bed bugs are small, flattened, wingless insects that feed solely on blood. They're called bed bugs because they've adapted to living in or near the bedding of humans. They stay hidden during the day, but emerge at night to feed upon the sleeping person's blood.

Bed bugs develop by incomplete metamorphosis. The eggs hatch and go through five nymphal stages before becoming adults, with the nymphs looking very much like the adults except for their size and color. First-instar nymphs are colorless, and the nymphs become darker with each successive stage. Nymphs must consume at least one blood meal before molting to the next stage.

Bed bug problems can become very bad, very quickly. A few bed bugs hitch-hiking in your suitcase can rapidly become a major bed bug infestation. A female bed bug can lay as many as 500 eggs during her lifetime, and each cluster can contain as many as 50 eggs. The eggs hatch in a week or two, and in ideal conditions, the nymphs can reach adulthood in as little as three or four weeks.

For a long time, it was believed that bed bug in the United States didn't carry diseases. Recently, however, we've learned that bed bugs are capable of transmitting a serious disease known as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is a form of Staph that doesn't respond to the antibiotics commonly used to treat Staph infections.

The main health effect associated with bed bugs, however, are their bites, which can cause severe itching, swelling, and rashes in many people. The affected skin may become infected when the individual scratches the rashes. The degree to which people are affected by bed bug bites varies, however: Some people show hardly any signs at all, while others get severe, painful rashes.

The rashes are often mistaken for various types of skin diseases when individuals are unaware that they have a bed bug infestation.

Bed bug extermination is probably the most difficult and challenging work that pest control professionals do. It's detailed, meticulous work, and using "shortcuts" will almost always cause the bed bug treatment to fail. Similarly, do-it-yourself bed bug control is almost always a waste of time: DIY bed bug control attempts almost always fail, and serve only to waste money and postpone the inevitable. Bottom line: If you have a bed bug problem, you need professional pest control.

As with most sorts of pest problems, prevention is easier than treatment. Here are some tips to help reduce the chances of a bed bug infestation:

EcoRaider is the only natural product that kills bed bugs with 100% efficacy, according to Entomological Society of America journal publication. Among a dozen of products (including 2 for professional and 10 for consumer) labeled for bed bugs, EcoRaider is by far the best in killing bed bug eggs. Direction for Use:

1) Inspection. Conduct a thorough inspection of the unit to be treated and locate areas of infestation. Turn over and disassemble the furniture, if possible, to find all bed bug hiding places.The key to any bed bug remediation is thorough, detailed, inspection.

2) Preparation. Put infested items in heavy duty plastic bags (shoes, books, toys, small furniture, electronics, etc) together with a hand towel saturated with EcoRaider. Seal the bag, shake and leave for two weeks before open if possible. Remove all bed linens, pillows and mattress cover, and send to laundry with hot water or tumble dry (140F). Separate mattress, box spring, and bed frame. Remove or reduce clutter as much as possible.

3) Treatment. Spot treat pre-determined infestation areas and other possible bed bug harborages in cracks and crevices, behind baseboards, along ceiling-wall and floor-wall junctions, in closets, behind crown molding, along window, door frames, curtain folds and edge / seam of all furniture, couches and chairs. Focus on edges and corners of furniture, appliance and the room itself. It is suggested to treat all bed bug hiding places thoroughly. Treat at least two hours before bed time for EcoRaider to take effect.

4) Usage: 1 gallon per 1000 sqft. One 16 oz bottle can be used forone bed room of about 125 sqft.

A warning during this busy travel season, it may not just be delays and bad weather that could spoil your vacation.

Exterminators say the bed bug problem is quick to spread this time of year.

Bed bugs had all but disappeared from the 1950s to the 1990s. But since then, bug experts, say the pests have made a huge resurgence, and Upstate exterminators say they are rampant in this area.

The blood sucking pests may only be a quarter of an inch, but in Spartanburg alone, theyve had the power to vacate apartments units and take down motels.

Fighting off bed bugs is serious work for Raksha Patel, owner of Royal Inn and Suites in Boiling Springs.

She has spent tens of thousands of dollars on mattress pads, mattresses, and cover springs to keep out unwanted guests. But it doesnt stop there.

And also weve changed the carpet, weve removed all the headboards in the rooms, and that protects from every bed bug situation we used to have before. We dont have an issue, but just to keep our customers happy weve done all this, says Patel.

Affordable Pest Control owner Israel Robinson, who has been an exterminator in the Carolinas for 30 years, has noticed that the times have changed. He says back when he started, parents who said, dont let the bed bugs bite were never concerned they actually would.

Its a growing problem, according to a North Carolina State entomologist, he stated that it has not peaked yet, because of the ability of them to adapt, Robinson says.

Robinson uses a combination of methods, but theres one treatment he says is the most effective.

Heat eradicates bed bugs, Robinson says.

He says that the bug dies at 120 degrees and the eggs die at 123 degrees.

To avoid bed bugs, anytime you visit a hotel, pull back the sheets and check the seams and corners of the mattress right near the pillow area. Youre looking for black spots, the bugs themselves, or yellowish skins that they shed.

Robinson also recommends checking headboards, alarm clocks and dressers near the bed.

To keep their facility clean, Royal Inn has monthly exterminations, and also sprays after each guests leaves.

And the motel even provides free laundry to new guests.

We tell them to wash their clothes before they would go in the motel room, so they dont bring in, Patel says.

A problem motels like Royal Inn and Suites deals with is that some clients will even falsely claim there are bed bugs to get a bill dismissed.

So if you do encounter any let a hotel know right away, dont wait until the morning after, and take pictures with your cell phone for evidence.
