AUGUSTA, Maine A Maine man, apparently angry he didnt qualify for assistance, slammed a cup of live bedbugs on the counter of a local municipal office, releasing about 100 tiny pests, the Kennebec Journal reports.

The man went to the code enforcement office in Augusta on June 2 to complain about bed bugs at his apartment.

Hed showed the cup of bedbugs to a manager at his new apartment building and the manager told him he couldnt live there and had to leave. So the man, whose name was not released, returned for the second time that day to the August City Center to ask for help.

Thats when he was told he did not qualify for assistance.

He whipped out a cup (full of live bedbugs) and slammed it on the counter, and bam, off they flew, maybe 100 of them, City Manager William Bridgeo told the newspaper.

The man allegedly yelled, Theyre your problem now!

Some of the bugs landed on an employee on the other side of the counter. The incident forced officials to close the city office for the rest of the day as exterminators were called in to kill the bugs.

It is not known if charges will be filed.

Eastern Health says a follow up assessment of a single resident room at Pleasant View Towers has determined the room to be free of bed bugs.

Eastern Health officials say on Saturday, June 3rd, bed bugs were discovered in the room in the new long-term care facility. Pest control was immediately called and the room was isolated and extermination took place.

A follow-up assessment yesterday showed the room was clear.

An entomologist specializing in bed-bugs says that there are a few common misconceptions surrounding the parasitic insects.

Sean Rollo, Eastern Regional manager with Orkin Canada, told VOCMs Nightline with Jonathan Richler that bed-bugs can live in any environment, regardless of cleanliness. Rollo says that many people associate the bugs with dirty homes and lower-economic settings, however the bugs are fairly indiscriminate and can be found even in luxury hotels or brand-new facilities.

Rollo says that residents shouldnt be concerned about bed-bugs getting into their homes, unless theyve been traveling.

He says that theres little chance of bed bugs walking through your front door, but encourages residents traveling and staying in hotels to give a quick check of their bed and night stand. He says if you dont see anything, than theres probably nothing to worry about.

The best defence in a multi-unit building, Rollo says, is to ensure that baseboards and walls are properly sealed to prevent migration between apartments.

The city manager in Augusta, Maine, says the municipal office building had to be sprayed for bedbugs after a man threw a cup of the pests onto an office counter and about 100 of them scattered off.

City Manager William Bridgeo tells the Kennebec Journal the man apparently complained Friday to the code enforcement office about bedbugs at his former apartment then left, but returned after he showed the cup of bugs to a manager at his new apartment and was told he couldn't live there.

Bridgeo says the man let the bugs loose in the General Assistance Office where he asked for a form to request assistance and apparently was told he didn't qualify.

Police didn't immediately release the man's name or say if any charges would be filed.
