Bed bugs dumped in Ohio man’s apartment by vandals | Fox News – Fox News

An Ohio man woke up last week to find an unwelcome number of creepy crawly guests in his apartment.

Police say someone smashed the mans window and released a large cluster of bed bugs inside.

The man told police in Middletown Ohio, located roughly 40 miles north of Cincinnati, that the vandal also lit a fire under his car, FOX 19 reported.

Officers responding to the home found the front window pan covered in bed bugs.

According to the police report obtained by FOX 19, the man saw a woman run from his apartment and drive off in a white car after the incident.

The man declined an interview with the television station, but a woman who lives in the same apartment complex said someone recently threw two bricks through her window.

"I've had to move my couch away from the window," the woman who did not want to be identified told FOX 19. "I shouldn't have to live like that in my own home."

Authorities have not named any suspects, but some neighbors believe kids are behind the vandalism.

Bedbugs turn stay at Colorado Springs hotel into a nightmare – The Denver Post

Christina Thomas got a nasty surprise when she booked a room at the Extended Stay America off Corporate Drive in Colorado Springs.

Thomas told KRDO-Channel 13 that her business trip last week turned into a nightmare when she discovered bedbugs on her pillow around 4 a.m. She reported the bedbugs to hotel management who offered her a replacement pillow.

Thomas refused to return to the room and because the hotel was booked, she was forced to sit in the lobby the rest of the night, she told the TV station.

Colorado Springs does not have a city ordinance that requires routine inspections for bedbugs in hotels or other businesses. Kim Melchor, Colorado Springs lead communications specialist, told KRDO that city code enforcement officers will respond to complaints about bedbugs or other infestations that fall under city code.

KRDO contacted Extended Stay Americas corporate office to ask about bedbug infestations. Although Terry Atkins, vice president of marketing and communications, agreed to an interview, he did not answer calls.

TARGET 13: Bed bug fiasco at Extended Stay America in Colorado Springs – KRDO

WATCH: Bed bug fiasco at Extended...

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - It's a vacationers worst nightmare...checking into a hotel room that's infested with bed bugs. It happens all over the country, especially this time of year.

"It's prime season for these guys," said Hank Spivey, with Why-U-Buggin Pest Control.

According to the most recent Bugs Without Borders survey, pest professionals report finding 75 percent of these pests in hotels or motels. New research to beat bed bug epidemic.

The problem?

There is no city ordinance in Colorado Springs that requires a routine inspection for bed bugs in hotels or other businesses to ensure they're following appropriate protocol.

"However, Code Enforcement will respond to individual complaints of bed bugs or other infestationsthat fall under the city code," said Kim Melchor, Colorado Springs Lead Communications Specialist.

Spivey, who is the owner and exterminator for "Why-U-Buggin" said he's come across hotels who refuse treatment in order to book another room.

"I have been in the situation where they have bed bugs and the management would chose to rent the room out another night as opposed to treating the room then," said Spivey.

Christina's story

What started out as a business trip, turned into a nightmare for Christina Thomas.

"I couldn't believe they were three inches from my face," she said.

Last week, Thomas checked into the Extended Stay America off of Corporate drive, with unexpected visitors.

"At four in the morning I woke up... just 3 inches from my face ... I see a spot, I look at it and I say... uh there's no way that's a bed bug," Thomas said.

Thomas said they were all over her pillow, and she immediately reported it to hotel management downstairs.

"The lady's like oh my gosh I'm so sorry ... here's another pillow .... and I said I'm not going back to the room."

The hotel was booked - forcing Thomas to sit in the lobby for the night.

"That's when I noticed the pillow was just sitting up on the counter and I actually took some pictures of the pillow not wrapped in any plastic or anything. Plus - the bed bugs were still on it," she said.

- Below are pictures sent to us from Thomas last week -

Corporate's response

KRDO NewsChannel 13 contacted Extended Stay America's corporate office to ask about its policies regarding bedbug infestations. Terry Atkins, the Vice President of Marketing and Communications agreed to an interview, but did not answer our calls at the set time.

We know the bug-infested pillow was moved out of the room and placed on the counter because of pictures sent into our newsroom. This could of potentially exposed the bugs to other rooms in the hotel. We don't know if any measures were taken to treat the infestation, because no one locally or at corporate will respond to our questions.

What should you do if you find bed bugs?

As Spivey explains, if bed bugs aren't properly removed - the whole vicinity is at risk.

"The best thing to do, is put it in a sealed bag. Then put some scotch tape on it - anything to keep it from getting loose because they breed really fast," he said.

Unfortunately, Thomas's situation isn't uncommon.

"With hotels and motels that have contacted me - I've been in the situation where they have bed bugs and management would chose to rent the room out another night as opposed to treating the room immediately," he said.

A horrifying thought for Thomas, who is still dealing with the bites a week later.

Note: Code Enforcement will respond to individual complaints of bed bugs or other infestations when requested.

Here are some tips on how to pack your luggage to avoid these pests.

No regulations for bed bugs…why not? – KRDO

Gaebler disagrees implementing policies

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Springs City Council PresidentPro-tem, JillGaebler disagrees there should be a city ordinance to regulate how hotels treat bed bug infestations.

Gaebler's stance

Before getting elected on council, Gaebler worked in affordable housing - where she came across the 'bed bug' issue before.

"It's a really difficult problem. It really takes a partnership between the person renting and the organization to work together," said Gaebler.

However, that doesn't always happen as we showed you with Christina Thomas. Management at the Extended StayAmerica did nothing for her, but offer her a new pillow when she discovered an infestation in her room.

Gaebler said that's not acceptable, but people who stay in hotels have choices.

"I think it's a free market issue where tourists, and guests will vote with their feet and they won't visit those establishments that have a history of having infestations," she said.

Opposition

Staying at a nicer hotel is a luxury some people don't have.

"If they're not doing it on their own accord, the city should make it a responsibility," said Randy Lillie.

Gaebler said this is an administrative issue, something City Council could consider in the future, if Code Enforcement sees a high volume of infestation reports.

Hotels that already implement policies aren't opposed to an extra layer of accountability.

"I think it would help all the hotels to give guests an extra level of confidence," said Aaron Duff, General Manager for the Antlers Hotel.

Although - whether that will happen could depend on more people like Thomascoming forward.

We contacted Extended Stay America's corporate office several times on this matter, and we have not received a response.
