VA Bed Bug Control & Removal – Bed Bugs in Virginia

Adult bed bugs are wingless, have six legs, about the size of an apple seed and are reddish-brown in color. The bed bug has three distinct life stages eggs, nymphs, and adults. Nymph and adult bed bugs feed on blood and will take a blood meal about once per week. Female bed bugs must consume blood and mate with a male in order to produce fertile eggs. These eggs are very small and resemble a grain of salt. An adult female generally will live for about a year under favorable conditions and during her lifetime will lay hundreds of eggs.

Bed bugs get into homes and businesses by hitchhiking on items brought from other locations. The more common manner of introduction is with infested luggage, clothing, backpacks, used or discarded furniture, and a host of other infested items. The best advice to avoid a bed bug problem is to thoroughly inspect all of your personal items after traveling or anytime something new is brought into the household. Always be suspicious.

What is the first indication that bed bugs are in your home? They are small, reclusive in their behavior, and generally only show themselves at night when occupants are asleep. So the answer may be the presence of unexplained bites or skin irritation. But not everyone reacts to bed bug bites in the same way. In fact, some people do not react for several days after being bitten and some people to not react at all. As a result, homeowners must be aware of other signs and indications of bed bugs.

Obviously, actually seeing bed bugs when doing your own inspection is a great indicator. Since bed bugs are active while you are asleep, begin your inspection in the bedroom where you sleep. Bed bugs like to commune together, so look for them in their obscure, protective hiding places such as along mattress seams, behind head boards and foot boards, in cracks and gaps at the floor/wall junction, along baseboards, around door and window facings, in night stands or any area within several feed of your bed.

What you look for during the inspection are the bed bugs black-colored fecal droppings, their cast skins left behind after they molt from one stage to another and blood spots on the bed clothing. This very time-consuming inspection can be done by the homeowner; however, the best option is to have your pest professional do the work.

Treating the Common Bed Bugs, Cimex Lectularius

An interview with Susan E. Little, DVM, PhD, Diplomate EVPC (professor and Krull-Ewing Endowed chair in Veterinary Parasitology at Oklahoma State University), elicited some interesting information about the current bed bug epidemic in the U.S.

Bed bugs havent been a problem in this country for over 50 years, but they remained prevalent in other locations throughout the world, including Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe.

However, bed bugs are again turning up across the U.S. in a wide variety of locations, including:

According to Dr. Little, the problem is thought to be a combination of:

If you suspect the source of your pets itching might be bed bugs, the first things you should carefully inspect are the mattresses, box springs, bed frames and the areas around the beds in your home.

Then widen your search to include other areas of the bedrooms, including around baseboards, in corners, cracks, crevices and similar hiding places. Look for dark staining or speckling. Bed bug droppings look similar to flea dirt. Also look for eggs and molted skin that has dropped off.

As Dr. Little points out in her interview:

Bed bugs are really a human problem that also happen to affect the pets that live in the home. As veterinarians, clients may come to us with a bed bug problem and we need to be able to help them, but the pets are not the source of the infestation or the only host sustaining the bed bugs in that home.

Springer Canine Teams Receive NESDECA Bed Bug Certification – PCT Magazine

The team at Mississippi State University has been implementing a multi-pronged approach to monitor these pests.

STARKVILLE, Miss.Mississippi State University researchers are continuing to study a crazy creature found in Mississippis coastal counties.

The tawny crazy ant, also known as Nylanderia fulva, is a non-native ant species that has been found in the southern United States, including Hancock, Jackson and Harrison counties in Mississippi. The ants are not widely distributed on the Mississippi gulf coast, but their presence can be overwhelming in areas that contain a crazy ant population, according to MSU researchers who study and monitor the ants.

Blake Layton, an extension professor in MSUs Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology, has been developing guidelines to help homeowners deal with heavily infested areas, which can contain millions of ants, and prevent new populations from forming.

When I go visit homeowners, Ill ask them if theyve had an electrical short, Layton said. They dont just say theyve had one; they start naming the last half dozen theyve experienced. Thats the real problem with these things.

The tawny crazy ant was first documented in Hancock County in 2009, with infestations first recorded in Jackson County in 2010 and in Harrison County in 2012. In addition to Mississippi, crazy ants have been reported in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Georgia. Researchers at MSU, including those with the MSU Extension Service and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, are collaborating with other southern universities to study the crazy ant and track its movement across the southeast United States.

Everybody combines what they have, but the first step is knowing what populations are really crazy ants and seeing how theyre spreading, said Joe MacGown, research technician/science illustrator in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology. My role is providing information to other people. We provide specimens to other researchers who may be doing genetic or chemical work, trying to figure out ways to control these things.

Tawny crazy ants are known for their erratic movements when foraging, which helped give them their common name. They are often confused with the Argentine ant, known to most as sugar ants. The crazy ant came to the United States from South America and has been causing issues in Texas and Florida for more than ten years.

MSU Extension agents on the coast help monitor the spread of crazy ants in Mississippi. Although they are easy to kill, the ants are difficult to control because of their massive scale, according to Layton. Treated areas are often quickly re-infested by ants migrating from adjacent untreated areas. The surviving ones can travel over the large swath of dead ant bodies without contacting insecticide treated surfaces.

More information on the tawny crazy ant can be found at http://www.mississippientomologicalmuseum.org.msstate.edu/Researchtaxapages/Formicidaepages/genericpages/Nylanderia_fulva.htm#.WLcgfjvytaQ. Beware of bed bugs: 7 things to know about the blood-sucking critters – The Straits Times

SINGAPORE - Low-cost carrier Scoot and cinemachain Golden Village are under the microscope, after their customers complained of being bitten by bed bugs last week.

Scoot passenger Jiamin Han noticed bites on her arms and backfollowingflights from Singapore to Hong Kong and back, while cinema patron Debra Low complained about the bugs at two of Golden Village's cinemas.

Scoot has since apologised to Ms Han and said it is investigating the alleged incident, adding that it regularly cleans and disinfects its seats.

Golden Village, meanwhile, said it had blocked off the affected seats once it received Ms Low's feedback. The company also shared that it hires a pest control unit that conducts monthly inspections for all its cinemas.

The problem of the blood-sucking critters has emerged in recent years, with website BedBug Central reporting that populations have multiplied since the 1990s.

They can now be found in almost every country and region. Here are some things to know about them.

They are parasitic insects that feed exclusively on blood. They come out of their hiding places at night and feed on the exposed skin of the host, usually without the person's knowledge.

Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed, up to 5mm long, and can survive up to a year without feeding.

The parasites thrive in places with a frequent turnover of people, such as hotel rooms, airplanes and taxis.

International travel has often been cited as a contributor to the rise of bed bugs.

Red, itchy bites that have the appearance of flat, red welts in zigzag lines or small clusters.

Do not scratch the bites as this may lead to blisters or skin infections. Instead, wash and treat them with an anti-itch cream or apply calamine lotion. Then seek a doctor's advice.

If not scratched, the areas bitten may heal in a week or two.

When planning where to stay, check for recent complaints of hotel infestations on BedbugRegistry.com or Bedbugger.com

Check reviews before booking a hotel room as guests who have encountered bed bugs are likely to mention this in their hotel review.

When inspecting a room, check the surface of the mattress and under the blankets, especially in the corners, mattress seams and around the headboard. Pay particular attention to cracks, crevices, seams and folds.

Look for dried blackish spots, skin sheddings and even live bugs. Use a torch or the light from your smartphone to help you spot them more easily.

If you want to be extra careful, use a hairdryer and run it across the surfaces you are inspecting. The heat should send any bed bugs scurrying out.

When inspecting the room, place your luggage in the bathtub. Bed bugs generally do not like smooth, hard surfaces as they are difficult to hide in.

When packing or unpacking your luggage, place it on the luggage rack away from walls, the bed or the couch - places where bedbugs commonly reside. But before doing this, check that there are no bed bugs on the luggage rack.

Pack your dirty clothes in sealable bags if you think you have been in bed bug-infested quarters.

Destroy any bugs or eggs in your luggage. Place them on the hard surface floor and not on the sofa or bed.

Wash dirty clothes in warm or hot water, then dry them in a dryer on a hot setting. This is sufficient to kill bed bugs in clothing or linens.

Then, sun your bags under direct sunlight for at least 30 minutes.

If the infestation is localised, cleaning the area with a vacuum cleaner that produces hot steam is enough. But if the whole house is affected, it is advisable to engage a pest control company.
