Its okay, bed bugs are sneaky critters that are hard to find. Bed bugs are small, parasitic insects that feed solely on the blood of people and animals while they sleep. Bed bugs are reddish-brown in color, wingless, range from 1mm to 7mm and can live several months without feeding.
Since bed bugs are most active at night (peak activity usually occurs between 10:00p.m. and 6:00a.m.) detection can be difficult. However, they can usually be seen along the seams of mattresses and furniture.
Just because bed bugs have the word bed in it, doesnt mean that they are only found in the bedroom. In fact, bed bugs can quickly spread to other rooms in the home via electrical sockets, loose wallpaper and by hitchhiking on your clothes.

Bed bugs are capable of crawling onto you or into your belongings and when you return home, they may then infest your home. Orkin Releases Top 50 Bed Bug Cities List, Baltimore …
Atlanta and Philadelphia break into top 10
ATLANTA (January 14, 2019) For the third year in a row, Baltimore tops Orkins Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list, released today. New York moved up two spots, while Atlanta and Philadelphia joined the top 10, replacing San Francisco and Dallas, respectively.
Five cities moved into the top 50 this year, including Lansing, Mich., Orlando, Fla., Davenport, Iowa, Ft. Wayne, Ind. and Youngstown, Ohio. Houston dropped nine positions, while Greenville, S.C., rose seven positions, entering the top 20.
The list is based on treatment data from the metro areas where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments from December 1, 2017 November 30, 2018. The ranking includes both residential and commercial treatments.
Bed bugs are the number one urban pest in many cities today, said Chelle Hartzer, an Orkin entomologist. They are master hitchhikers, so no one is immune. Sanitation has nothing to do with prevention: from public transit to five-star resorts, bed bugs have been and can be found everywhere humans are.
Bed bugs are normally nocturnal insects that come out of hiding to take blood meals from sleeping or quietly resting humans. They are always in motion and do not have a regular hiding place. Bed bugs will attach to luggage, purses, backpacks, jackets and other belongings, dropping off almost anywhere to find a new carrier.
According to the 2018 Bugs without Borders Survey by the National Pest Management Association, the top three places where pest professionals report finding bed bugs are single-family homes (91 percent), apartments/condominiums (89 percent) and hotels/motels (68 percent). With that, hotels spend an average of $6,383 per bed bug incident.
A bed bug introduction occurs when one or more bed bugs enter a space. During an introduction, bed bugs probably havent started reproducing yet, but they could soon.
Bed bugs are capable of rapid population growth with an adult female laying two to five eggs per day (up to 500 in her lifetime), often making treatment challenging. Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed and typically reddish brown. Their small size and ability to hide make them difficult to see during the day, so its important to look for the black, ink-like stains they can leave behind.
Bed bugs are an elusive threat to your household and beyond, so its critical to detect and treat for them as early as possible. Anyone who suspects a bed bug infestation should contact a pest management professional immediately.

The Law About Bed Bugs in Canada | Rox Bugs
Are thinking of relocating to Canada? Moving your family to a different city can be overwhelming especially when you know little about the town. If you are moving to a new location and you are worried about who will foot the bills in case of bug infestations, then read on.
If you move to your dream house, apartment or condo only to find out you just moved into a breeding home of pesky bugs, it is a nightmare. To make the matter worse often times, you are responsible for the cost of extermination. Before you own a home in any of the regions in Canada, it is necessary to read and understand the law governing the city; every homeowner or tenant should understand bed bugs and the law governing the area to avoid unnecessary disputes between landlords and tenants.
It is the sole responsibility of the landlord to provide a healthy and habitable environment for the tenant. If the tenants notice bug infestation, they are advised to go to the local health authority and report the situation. The health inspectors will evaluate the case, and if the landlord is found wanting, he will be asked to take of it.
Similar to Alberta, the landlord must provide healthy and bug-free rental unit for the tenants. The landlord is responsible for exterminating bed bug infestations. If you are living in Vancouver or planning to move there, kindly visit the Tenants Rights Action Coalition for further information; Vancouver has a high rate of bed bug invasion.
The landlords are obligated to exterminate cockroaches, as well as other pesky pests and rodents while they have tenants, to maintain a healthy and clean environment afterward under the provinces public health act.
Tenants and landlords handle the situation themselves, but if they cannot find common ground to settle the bed bug case, the residential tenancy branch can intervene and help the landlord and tenant resolve the dispute.
If you are leaving in New Brunswick, there is no specific bed bug legislation. Nevertheless, the rental and consumer affairs can help you resolve any cases of bed bug-related disputes between tenants and landlords. The law favors the tenants, only if they have proofs that the fault was as a result of the landlords negligence.
There is no laid down legislation for resolving bed bug disputes between the tenant and the landlord in Nova Scotia. However, if the landlord can prove that the tenant is responsible for the bugs infestation, then they will be responsible for extermination. Furthermore, if the tenant is found innocent, the landlord assumes the responsibility of fixing the bed bug problems.
Again, like the maritime provinces, there is no laid down rule concerning bed bug infestation. The landlord is mandated to provide a bug-free environment for any new tenant, and the tenant has to ensure the environment is clean and free from clutter to eliminate the risk of inviting pests in the house.
If you are moving to this region as a tenant, YOU are responsible for the cost exterminating bed bugs, and other pests from your home, except if you have evidence that you did not bring them while moving. It is a little tricky nevertheless, it is the duty of the landlord to stop the infestation from spreading to another part of the house.
Like some of the provinces in Canada, no specific rule covers bed bug infestation, but each will be handled by an arbitrator before any action can be taken. The case can be in favor of the landlord or the tenant so long each party can prove they are not guilty of the pest invasion.
For more information, landlords and tenants can consult individual local or provincial landlord-tenant agencies for guidance.

Do Bed Bugs Smell? | Arrow Exterminating
arrowadmin | Posted on February 17, 2017
The scent gland of bed bugs produces a musty odor that is often described as smelling like coriander. The smell is not pleasant. If you have an infestation of bed bugs you may begin to notice your home smells like moldy shoes or wet moldy clothes.
If you are at a point where you notice a Bed Bug Smell, then it could be a good possibility that you may have a problem.
While many folks describe the smell of a bed bug infestation as smelling like spoiled raspberries, some may also describe it as similar to coriander. Although not all people smell the bed bugs similarly, coriander or cilantro seems to be a common description. You will sometimes also hear folks describe the Bed Bug Smell as similar to almonds or somewhat acidic marzipan (almonds). However, not everyone describes a smell when encountering bed bug infestations. It isnt always the same experience for everyone.
When those people that describe the smell of bed bugs as similar to coriander, they are in good company. Coriander is an herb and belongs to the carrot family. The Greek word for bug is at the root of the word koris. When the seeds of coriander are ripe, they emit a musty, sweetish aroma that has been compared to that of bedbugs. Its almost as though coriander smells like bed bugs versus bed bugs smell like coriander.
It is commonly thought that the smell originates from the droppings of the bug. Typically when there are larger populations it is more likely that bed bugs odors are often detected. It may be months of an infestation before a scent is detected. Sometimes after a very heavy infestation that has been around long term, a minty smell is detected also. Crushed bed bugs tend to give off a strong smell. Although it is not likely that a few bed bugs living in an area will be smelled, it is pretty common that a large infestation may be noticed by the smell it emanates. The musky smell is also based on pheromones produced by the bed bug. Bed Bug Detection Dogsare trained to sniff out and find bed bugs based on smell. Dogs have the ability to smell bud bugs and infestations that humans never could expect to detect. Dogs have been able to boast a 97% detection rate for bed bugs while humans visually inspecting have a much smaller success rate.
Dogs have been a very positive tool in the battle of the bed bug. Typically a dog can find a bed bug infestation within just a few minutes of searching. Because dogs are so successful in finding bed bugs, they have been used extensively in the last decade or so. As infestations increase in number and frequency, dogs who are experts at finding the Bed Bug Smell are being trained at a much higher rate than in years past. The majority of dog training facilities are based in Florida but more and more businesses are training dogs to employ in the bed bug industry. Mans best friend, may truly be the bed bugs worst enemy.
