Can bed bugs make you sick? [2018 comprehensive health …
Repeated exposure to bed bug bites for several weeks and months can sensitize you to the saliva, and you can develop mild to intense allergic reactions. Some peoples skin does not react to bed bug bites. Some unlucky others develop severe rashes or blisters.
Some peoples skin does not react to bed bug bites. Some unlucky others develop severe rashes or blisters. Even when they are sharing the same bed, their skin can be affected differently.
Approximately 50 to 70% of people develop an allergic reaction to the saliva injected by the bed bugs. This usually results in small, flat or raised bumps, red, swollen, and itchy skin. The bed bug bite areas can become infected when scratched.
The effect of bed bug bites varies, and everybodys reactions are different. Bed bugs require blood to feed and reproduce. Their bites usually cause itchy red welts.
Usually, when bed bugs bite, you wont feel the pain. If you are living with a significant infestation, your sleep will be disturbed, and your skin will become more sensitive. You could experience notable blood loss and anemia.
As the bug numbers rapidly increase, the problems usually become much worse. Health problems grow, and the added social stigma affects victims of bed bugs significantly.
There is no evidence that bed bugs are involved in the transmission (via a bite or infected feces) of any disease, including hepatitis B virus and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.(Source)
When a bed bug feeds, it inserts saliva into its blood-meal host, usually causing an allergic response. How your body will respond much depends on your immune system.
Bed Bug Exterminator Near Me
Bed bug bites usually cause only itchiness. Usually, when bed bugs bite, you wont feel the pain.
Yes, they are. According to one study, 72% of people have itchy red welts, and 28% percent have to itch in the absence of welts.
Our bodies respond in different ways at different times. Bites are more likely to itch if you are overheated, such as in a warm bath or shower, during exercise or in a hot car.
Usually, you cant feel them. Bed bugs prefer not to climb onto you as they feed. Bed bugs crawl along the edge of the exposed skin, seeking for a suitable feeding spot. This can cause bites to occur in rows.
Bed bug bites create minor swelling, local reddening, itching, and inflammation of your skin. Itching can be very intense.
The skin reaction to a bed bug bite may be delayed for up to two weeks, mainly if it is the first time that you have been bitten. That leads to delays in the detection of an infestation.
The duration of a bite will depend mainly on your bodys ability to heal itself. If you scratch a bite, then it becomes a wound, open to secondary infections. When left unscratched, the bite will usually heal without scarring.
Bed bug bites in a line can be small or large, flat or raised, red welts to rashes, hives, or blisters.
Yes, they do. Bed bugs can bite any exposed skin. Most bed bug bites occur on the chest or back, neck, hands, feet or face.
Bed bugs commonly like to feed an hour or two before sunrise, when you sleep. They can bite you in the daytime if theyre starving. When you sit for a long time on an infested chair or sofa, bedbugs will be forced to feed while you are there.
Bed Bug Bites Treatment from your Kitchen Cupboard
Bed bug bites show up in a cluster of red bumps, a row of several bites, or in a zig-zag line.
Bed bug bites can occur alone, but they tend to bite multiple times since they often test a few areas first to locate the best source of blood for their meal.
The classic breakfast, lunch and dinner bite patterns it is not very common. Often, bed bugs can get enough food from a single piercing. If it is unable to get a full meal due to a tricky spot on your skin or some other factor, then it may need to pierce again in a close cluster.
Environment, stress, and many other factors can result in an old bite flaring up. Some people just think about bed bugs and bites appear again.
As high as 60% of all exposed people never react to bed bug bites, and they can live unaware of the fact that they have bed bugs. The rest develop from mild to severe reaction.
You could respond immediately to bedbug bites, or develop some reaction up to 21 days later, depending on your immune system. This is the reason for an infestation going undetected for a very long time.
They look different for different people. Some have an extreme reaction and develop severe swells like a blister. Others have nothing more than a red spot that fades away after a few minutes.
Bed bugs crawl along the edge of the exposed skin, exploring for any suitable feeding spot. They could attack any inch of your skin.
The skin of your body responds differently. As a rule, try to avoid bed bug bites on your hands, feet, and face as they tend to react the most. If you develop bullous/blisters within a few minutes, seek immediate medical attention.
According to the CDC, bed bugs are not a health risk for the public; they dont spread any pathogens or transfer any disease.
There are a few reports of systemic allergic reactions from bed bug bites, like asthma, generalized hives, and anaphylaxis (Source).
Bed bugs do carry 24 known pathogens, but do bedbugs transmit disease? Nope, bed bug bites wont make you sick unless, of course, the bites get infected.
While bed bugs do feed on blood, they dont spread AIDS or other blood-borne illnesses. If youre bitten by bed bugs, the only things you need to worry about are not scratching the bites until they bleed and finding a way to control the itching.
Bed bug scars and marks on the skin can last for weeks and in some cases, result in permanent scarring. For advice from Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, check the video below:
(suggested by http://www.bedbugsbites.net)
According to research and victims experience, these are the actions you should consider to make your skin feel better:
There is evidence that subsequent infections from bed bug bites can cause significant problems for some people:
Modern research has already answered the question: Can bedbugs make you sick?. It is confirmed that there is no evidence that bugs can transmit diseases. Still, this does not mean that bed bugs should be excluded from a medical standpoint. Bed bugs and bed bug bites are a pain to deal with. We must take all necessary measures for their prevention and control.
BEDBUGS are a nasty pest that no one wants in their house. But even when they are gone they leave traces behind that can cause allergic reactions and even asthma attacks. When bedbugs poop in your bed they leave behind a chemical called histamine, which causes allergy symptoms in people.
According to PCT Online, bed bug histamines are substantial, persistent in infested homes
Newresearch findingscould turn perceptions of the already despised bed bug from nuisance pest into a medically important threat. A study from North Carolina State University shows that histamine levels are substantially higher in homes infested by bed bugs than in pest-free homes and that these histamine levels persist for months even if the bed bugs have been eliminated from the home. It is histamine that causes your runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing and trouble breathing.
Histamine levels in bed bug infested homes were at least 20 times higher than histamine levels in homes without bed bugs, DeVries said. And these levels didnt decrease much three months after treating the infested homes with heat and insecticides.
In humans, histamines are generally released as part of an immune response. They cause inflammation and help allow other immune system chemicals to fight a pathogen or to do cellular repair work. Histamines, though, can have deleterious effects in humans, including rashes when contacted with skin and respiratory problems when inhaled think of the allergic reactions to certain foods, pollen, mold or other environmental conditions.
Histamines are used in skin and respiratory allergy tests as a positive control they cause a bump in skin tests and restrict breathing in respiratory tests, DeVries said.
Bed bugs naturally give off high levels of histamine in their feces; DeVries says that bed bugs use histamine as a marker of a good place to aggregate. When bed bugs find their way into homes, they tend to aggregate in bedrooms where sleeping humans the food source for bed bugs spend a good part of their day.
In Conclusions
Bed bugs have become a major social, economic, and health problem since their global resurgence in the early 2000s. Infestations can reach exceedingly high levels, especially among the elderly and in disadvantaged communities, where interventions may be unaffordable. While bed bug bites have been recognized as a dermatological concern that can be exacerbated and lead to secondary infections, bed bugs have not been implicated as disease vectors or allergen producers. The results of this study demonstrate that the presence of bed bugs strongly correlates with histamine levels in homes, and thus may adversely affect the health of residents through exposure to exogenous histamine.
Furthermore, bed bug eradication with heat and insecticides does not appear to reduce histamine levels in homes, suggesting high thermal and chemical stability of histamine. The intimate association of bed bugs with humans and the spatial distribution and persistence of histamine in homes suggest that histamine may represent an emergent indoor environmental contaminant whose impact on human health should be investigated.

What Do Bed Bug Bites Look Like (And How To Get Rid of …
It can be difficult to identify bed bug bites because the red itchy bumps caused by bed bug bites look like flea bites or mosquito bites. Bed bugs usually come out at night and feed on the blood of humans. The tiny nasty pests can leave a cluster of bite marks on your face, arms, stomach, and legs. Some people only have a mild reaction to the bed bug bites and may only have a few small red dots. However, others have more severe reactions and are plagued by large red bite marks and an irresistible urge to scratch them.
Pictures of bed bug bites show groups of red bite marks on the body. Very often, the bite marks left by bed bugs are in straight lines or in a zig-zag and very rarely is there just one solitary red bite mark.
There are many effective natural home remedies to quickly get rid of the signs of bed bug bites. You can make your own natural treatments for insect bites with ingredients like witch hazel, apple cider vinegar, and aloe vera. The natural anti-inflammatory ingredients in those home remedies help to quickly relieve itching and promote healing.
In this article, you will learn how to identify bed bug bites and find out how to get rid of them quickly. You will also see images of bed bug bites to help you to spot the tell-tale signs that you have been bitten.
The Latin name for bed bugs is Cimex lectularius, or common bed bug. If youve ever seen a close-up picture of a bed bug you will see that they look quite scary. However, in reality, bed bugs are tiny pests that lurk in corners and crevices of beds, mattresses, and furniture. They are about the size of a small apple seed and many can be seen crawling around if you have an infestation.
Dr. Carol DerSarkissian on WebMD says that bed bugs have flat, brown, oval bodies. They dont have wings but can quickly scurry over floors, ceilings, and walls. The parasitic insects live in groups and love to hide in dark places. If you have a bed bug problem in your home, you should check for signs of bed bugs in corners of your bed frame, along the seams of mattresses, along baseboards, and behind pictures. In fact, they will live in any crevice that is large enough to slide a credit card into.1
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that bed bug eggs look like tiny white pinheads. As they go through their nymph stages they shed skins and these yellowish shells are a common sign to look for when checking for an infestation of bugs.2
On most people, bed bug bites look like itchy red bumps on their body. However, it can be difficult to know if the bite marks have been caused by bed bugs or not.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the symptoms of bed bug bites may not appear for a few days. Also, each person reacts differently to being bitten by these irritating pests. Some people show no signs of being bitten whereas other people have a severe reaction to the bite, and large bumps appear on the skin that itch severely.3
However, Dr. Carol DerSarkissian on WebMD says that the only way to know for sure if the red bite marks have been caused by bed bugs is to look for signs of a bug infestation. That will confirm if the red spots that look like bed bug bites are in fact the result of bed bugs.
Images of bed bug bites generally show clusters of itchy red bumps on a persons arms, neck, face, legs, and other areas of their body. Depending on the number of bed bugs that have infested your sleeping area and your reaction to them, bed bug bites also have other signs.
Doctors from the Mayo Clinic say that more often than not, bed bug bites will be in either a rough line or in a cluster of red marks. If they cause a severe skin reaction, the itching can be very intense. In rare cases, a person who has many bites and a severe allergic reaction should visit a doctor.4
Doctors from the National Health Service say that, in some cases, the itchy red bumps on the skin can cause a rash or start to blister and fill with fluid.5
However, it can be difficult to tell if the bites have been caused by bed bugs or another insect. Therefore, its important to know how to identify the difference between bed bug bites, flea bites and mosquito bites.
Flea bites and bed bug bites look very similar and cause itchy red marks on the skin. Even in pictures, it is hard to tell bed bug bites and flea bites apart. However, there are some differences.
The symptoms of flea bites generally appear on the ankles, feet and around the abdomen. As with bed bug bites, flea bite symptoms can also appear in small clusters. Dr. Carol DerSarkissian says that if you look closely at a bed bug bite you wont see a small red dot in the middle as is characteristic of flea bites.1
Both mosquito bites and bed bug bites can leave itchy welts on the skin. Doctors from the Mayo Clinic say that the symptoms of mosquito bites show up very soon after the bite; in fact, in only a few minutes, a puffy red bump usually appears.6
Unlike bed bug bites that are painless, you may feel the mosquito bite and it might start to itch immediately. It is also more likely that the mosquito bite will blister and ooze a small amount of fluid.
Bed bug bite marks usually heal within 2 weeks and wont leave any permanent mark on the skin. In some cases, there are complications associated with bed bug bites.
Of course, for many people, the appearance of red itchy welts on visible areas of skin like their face or arms is an unwanted complication of bed bug bites.
One of the most common, and potentially serious, complications that is seen with bed bug bite is a secondary skin infection. Dr. Stephanie S. Gardner on WebMD says that itching from bed bug bites can be so severe that constant scratching breaks the skin and germs get it. This can cause a bacterial infection in the bite mark.7
Dr. Steven Doerr on eMedicnineHealth warns that some people experience severe allergic reactions to bed bug bites. Some of the signs of a serious allergic reaction include itching all over the body, tightness in the throat, chest pain, red bed bug rash that spreads from the bite area.8
At least the good news with bed bug bites is that they dont spread disease. The CDC states that bed bugs dont spread disease and the most serious health threat is a lack of sleep from scratching and secondary skin infections.3
If you suspect that clusters of itchy red spots on your body are the result of pesky bed bugs, you should check for signs of an infestation.
First, you dont have to worry that having bed bugs is a sign of uncleanliness or dirtiness. The CDC says that bed bugs only feed on blood and arent attracted to dirt. Bed bugs have been found in the cleanest of 5-star hotels.3
To check for signs of bed bugs, you should look in areas where they tend to live. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that tell-tale signs of bed bug activity are tiny rusty-colored stains on bed linen from bug feces or dried blood. You may also notice tiny yellow shed skins around your bed and sleeping area.9
The next step to confirm if itchy red marks on your skin are from bed bugs is to find where the critters are hiding. You should check all joints and screw holes in your bed frame, around mattresses and box springs, and around the headboard. Other places where you might find evidence of a bed bug infestation are in the folds of drapes, in drawer joints, behind loose wallpaper, and at baseboards.
If you find feces, dead bed bugs, or bed bugs crawling around, it is time to take drastic action to get rid of the bed bugs quickly. This is the only way to prevent getting more bed bug bites in the future. Some effective ways to kill off infestation of irritating insects include using bed bug powders that destroy populations of bed bugsas well as bed bug sprays.
Fortunately, there are many great home remedies to get rid of bed bug bites quickly. Here are a few of the best ways of treating bed bug bites at home.
To quickly get rid of an intense itch in a swollen bump caused by a bed bug bite, you can use a cold compress. One excellent way to make a compress is by using a cold tea bag. Cold helps to relieve irritation from your skin by calming nerve endings, and tea helps to relieve itching and promotes healing.
A study from 2012 into the healing effects of tea found that compounds in black and green tea have an astringent effect. This helps to reduce itching in irritated, inflamed skin.9 However, you dont just have to use black or green tea bags. Research has also found that chamomile has soothing properties and is just as effective as hydrocortisone creams (often prescribed by doctors to reduce itching in insect bites).10
How to use:
To quickly get rid of the irritation that bed bug bites cause using a cold tea compress, this is what you should do:
Aloe vera also has properties that reduce itching and help to speed up the healing time of a bed bug bite. Aloe vera contains many properties to nourish your skin and relieve inflammation and irritation.
One study into the healing properties of aloe vera found that it has a soothing effect on irritated skin. It was found that aloe vera was just as effective as hydrocortisone creams in reducing itching and inflammatory responses in the skin.11
How to use:
Aloe vera gel is great for helping bed bug bites to heal faster. This is what you should do:
Tea tree oil will help to treat the itch in bed bug bites and help prevent secondary infections making the skin worse. Tea tree oil contains powerful antimicrobial compounds as well as properties that help to reduce inflammation and itching.
One of the benefits of using tea tree oil to quickly treat bed bug bites is that it helps soothe allergic skin reactions. For example, the British Journal of Dermatology reported on a study into the antihistamine effect of tea tree oil. Histamine is released by the body as a response to allergens. It was found that applying tea tree oil to skin inflammation helped to soothe the allergic response fast.12
How to use:
You can use tea tree oil as a spot treatment on one or two bed bug bites or you can mix a couple of drops of tea tree oil with coconut oil to apply to clusters of bed bug bites. This is what you should do:
For large clusters of bed bug bites, you can get relief by adding 2-3 drops of tea tree oil to a tablespoon of coconut oil. Apply 2-3 times a day to help your skin heal and treat any bed bug bite blisters that have formed.
You can also use tea tree oil to make a natural spray for bed bug eradication.
There are many other natural ways to get rid of the visible signs of bed bug bites. Here are some more ways.
Witch hazel is a natural astringent that quickly soothes itchy skin and reduces redness. Witch hazel is perfect for treating bed bug bites and can be applied whenever your bite marks start itching.
Apple cider vinegar, when it is diluted with water in equal proportions, helps to reduce itching and kill germs in bed bug bites. Just apply diluted apple cider vinegar to the affected area to stop itching fast.
Cucumbers have an amazing soothing effect on the skin and will give you instant relief from itching and irritation. All you have to do is apply slices of cool cucumber to your bite marks.

Of course, preventing an infestation of bed bugs is much easier than having to deal with the discomfort bed bug bites cause.
The CDC says that one of the best ways to prevent bed bug bites is to regularly check your bed, mattress, and bed linen for signs of bed bug activity. This can help you get rid of bed bugs before they become a major problem.3
Also, you should be careful of buying second-hand furniture. The National Health Services warns to avoid buying second-hand mattresses and if you do buy used furniture, carefully inspect it for bed bugs.5 Remember, that in the right conditions, bed bugs can live for many months without feeding!

just how cold should it be to kill bed bugs – BedBugsBites.net
Most people have heard about the freezing treatment to kill bed bugs. Naturally, a question foremost on their mind is: just how cold should it be to kill bed bugs? If you are planning to use such freezing treatment to get rid of bedbugs, then read on for important information.
Recent studies have shown that bedbugs are no longer susceptible to cold treatment. The freezing method is simply not as effective as it once was in killing these critters. The same research has proven that the blood sucking parasites have become immune and developed a high tolerance to cold. Also the experiment showed that bedbugs eventually succumb to extreme cold, it takes several days to see results. Bedbugs are actually known to have developed high cold-tolerance by lowering their bodily fluid-freezing points. This freeze intolerant strategy helps them survive in extreme cold conditions.
The bed bug or Cimex Lectularius had disappeared for many decades but has made a comeback recently. Bedbugs are now known to infiltrate student hostels, hotels and motels, cinema halls, public transport systems, airlines, buses and even schools, assisted living facilities and hospitals. Many news reports have stated that several famous cinema halls in major cities like New York etc have actually been shut down thanks to bedbugs. Bedbugs feed on human and animal blood. They insert sharp proboscis in the mammals skin to suck the blood and this leaves red welts and itchy bumps on the victims bodies.
People often use bedbug bombs, foggers, sprays and powders only to have the bugs back within a few days of this treatment. In the past, freezing treatment was known to have worked well but the new study published in the Journal of Economic Entomology has proven otherwise.
This aforementioned study was conducted in the University of Minnesota where researchers froze the bedbugs in varying life stages. They also tested the effect of cold on fed and unfed bedbugs. They exposed the adult, eggs, nymphs and larvae of bedbugs to extreme cold temperatures of -5 deg Celsius for varying lengths of time. They further reduced the temperature to -16 deg Celsius and they found that the adult bugs survived at this temperature as well. The eggs of the bugs survived in short term exposure to even lower temperatures of -25 degrees C. The study ultimately proved that the adult bedbugs could be killed by cold only through exposure to temperatures of -16 deg C or lower for a period of at least 80 hours.
This is the main reason why many museums and food facilities use standard practices of freezing possibly infested items to cold temperatures before displaying them. This safe method can also be used by homeowners dealing with bedbugs provided they have large freezers that can accommodate all infested items.
If you suspect any items of being infested, make sure you place them in a sturdy Ziploc/freezer bags. This will ensure that the bugs do not die off elsewhere in the freezer. Also, bagging delicate items before freezing them will ensure that they do not get damaged thanks to changes in condensation or moisture. Make sure that you place all infested items in freezers having temperatures of at least -17.8 deg C for a period of 4 days.If the freezer is at a temperature of minus 20 deg C, then you can reduce the period to 48 hours. That is how long it takes to get rid of all bed bugs.
The aforementioned study also studied the effect of such supercooling on the feeding habits of bed bugs. The study then concluded that 100% of the bugs could be killed with minimum exposure of 80 hours at -16deg Celsius.
Bedbugs do not carry any diseases but simply having an infestation is socially unacceptable. So while the cold temperature can be effective in killing them one has to make the following considerations:
Cold or freezing treatment is usually enough for treating bedbug infested fabrics but for other items it is best to use other techniques of killing bed bugs described on this website.
