This is one superlative no one wants their city to win. Pest control company Orkin recently released its Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list, compiled with data of the places where Orkin performed the most treatments for bed bugs from December 2018 through November 2019. The reality is that bed bugs have shown up in cities and towns all across America, from mansions to cramped apartments. Theyve been increasing in number in the United States since the turn of the century due to increased travel and limitations on certain insecticides, but numbers have been especially high in these cities. Theres not too much you can do to stop them; early detection is critical because there is no foolproof way to keep them out of your home. Here are the warning signs youre about to have a bed bug problem.
Taking first place on the listand stealing the not-so-coveted top spot from Baltimore which held it for three years in a rowwas Washington, D.C. (Baltimore still placed second.) Clearly, bed bugs love the Chesapeake Bay area. These two cities were followed, in order, by Chicago; Los Angeles; and Columbus, Ohio, which all retained their spots from last year to round out the top (bottom?) five.
Cities six through ten were New York; Detroit; Cincinnati; Indianapolis; and Atlanta. Indianapolis, at spot nine in 2020, jumped a whoppingfive spotsfrom last year. Indianas capital, new to the top ten, moved Philadelphia out of the leading cities (though it only dropped to number 12). No matter where you are, beds arent the only places youll find these peststhis is how to find (and get rid of) bed bugs in your car.
So if you live in or are visiting any of these cities, its wise to be a little more vigilant about your susceptibility to bed bugs and maybe stock up on a bed bug killer like this. According to the CDC, bed bugs often come into contact with people by way of luggage, bags, clothes, bedding, furniture, or anywhere they can easily hide and hitch a ride. Always inspect hotel rooms or any place you might be stayingheres a guide to how to do so properly. Now, make sure you know these16 secrets for getting rid of bed bugs.

More action required in battle against bedbugs – Winnipeg Free Press
Officials say bedbugs are not a public-health issue. Tell that to the people whose homes have been infested by the bloodsucking parasites.
The reason Manitoba, like other jurisdictions, does not categorize bedbugs as a public-health issue, a designation that could trigger much-needed resources and funding, is that the insect is not known to spread disease.

Elizabeth Warbansky desperately needs to scratch. Her arms. Her scalp. Her backside.
The constellation of red dots all over her body taunted her before she was prescribed anti-itching cream. If a bedbug isnt sucking on her blood, phantom pests are. Its been this way for the better half of the last six months, when the 66-year-old first learned her one-bedroom apartment in south River Heights was infested.

Thats small consolation to the many Manitobans battling bedbugs, for whom its definitely a critical issue, personal if not public.
The psychological, social and economic effects of a bedbug infestation can be overwhelming. People lose sleep, literally, knowing the pests typically hide in the seams of mattresses, awaiting the opportunity to emerge and feed on their hosts. They experience considerable stigma as workplaces, schools and friends are cautious about welcoming people who may unwittingly transport bedbugs. Repeated remediation treatments can cost thousands of dollars, and the disruption in a familys life can be tumultuous.
Unfortunately, an increasing number of Manitobans can personally confirm a recent resurgence of bedbug infestations. Two local pest-control companies say they alone performed 9,264 bedbug-related chemical and heat treatments last year. Among Canadian cities, Winnipeg is second only to Toronto in bedbug infestations. More complete statistics are unavailable because Manitoba has no single authority assigned to the bedbug issue, an absence of oversight that should be rectified.
The bedbug scourge doesnt currently fall under a specific municipal or provincial department, leaving citizens without an abundance of accurate information regarding the extent of the problem in Manitoba and what measures, if any, are underway to contain it.
This lack of government initiative might surprise the unfortunate citizens who discover the pests and immediately start looking for help.
The first step is identify the bugs, which are reddish brown and about the size of apple seeds. In Toronto, the public health department will accept samples of suspected bedbugs and corroborate the dreaded suspicion. But in Manitoba, no civic or provincial authority will accept samples for identification purposes.
Are government subsidies or tax breaks available to help Manitobans dealing with bedbug infestations? Yes, a small amount of financial help is available to help defray the considerable expenses, but the funding is not widely publicized. Also, the criteria to qualify for financial help, which is typically distributed through non-profit community organizations, have been tightened and are of assistance mostly to people dealing with hoarding or sanitation issues.
How about helping prospective tenants by listing multi-family units and apartment buildings that have had bedbug problems? In California, government officials are required to provide in writing the bedbug history of a building when asked. In Manitoba, renters are afforded no similar help from government.
The stress caused by bedbug infestations can be overwhelming. (Mike Deal / Free Press files)
Instead, Manitobans have to rely on alternatives that are, lamentably, open to misuse. There are crowdsourced websites that list the addresses of buildings purported to have had bedbugs, but in those online settings anyone can add an address, creating the risk of unethical renters falsely reporting infestations in an effort to harm the reputations of landlords with whom they are involved in disputes.
Manitoba could follow the example of other jurisdictions by tasking leadership with co-ordinating an offensive against bedbugs, investing in public education and providing funding to help people on the margins afford treatments before bedbugs migrate to neighbouring suites and houses.
Everyone who has had bedbugs agrees on one point: you cant ignore the problem and hope it goes away. The bedbugs are currently winning in Manitoba, and beating them will require the province to step up its action.

Graffiti trains, subway bed bugs more signs of a city on the wrong track (opinion) – SILive.com
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. A big chunk of the New York City subway system was brought to a standstill the other day, stranding thousands upon thousands of riders.
No, there wasnt a derailment. Or a person on the tracks. Or a power failure. Or some problem with the ancient signal system.
It wasnt the resignation of NYC Transit president Andy Byford sending a shock wave through the system.
It was bed bugs.
Well, it was one bed bug, which a transit worker noticed at a subway control tower in Queens.
The tower had to be evacuated, affecting service on the E, F, M and R lines for hours, until the premises could be fumigated. Without personnel in the tower, the trains just couldnt be turned around in a timely fashion.
One bed bug? My gut tells me that if youve got one bed bug, youve got more. But the point is how easily a major portion of the subway system can be disrupted.
The bed bug that roared, bringing a whole transit system to its knees. Protestors and terrorists take note!
While even the cleanest places can have bed bugs, its just disgusting that any one of us could find one of those creepy crawlers on the subway. And bring it back to our own homes. Whom do I sue if the MTA causes a bed bug infestation in my house?
When we get all those billions of dollars for the subways from congestion pricing, maybe we should build some redundancies into the system, so that if one control tower goes out of service, theres another facility ready to pick up the slack.
The Queens bed bug stoppage came a day after a dead homeless man was discovered on the D train, covered in bed bugs.
So it looks like the subway has a bed bug problem. And the city overall has a problem when people are being found dead on the subway system. That speaks to a whole host of problems, in fact.
Also last week, the Patrolmens Benevolent Association tweeted out a video of a subway car entirely covered with graffiti.
Theres nothing that screams city on the wrong track more than when subway cars again become rolling canvases for graffiti vandals. Or artists, depending on your viewpoint and your age.
Its not the first time weve seen a graffiti train recently. So it looks like the trend of tagging subway cars with graffiti is making a comeback after being pretty much eradicated in the 1990s.
I know I sound like a get off my damn lawn guy here, but believe me when I tell you that graffiti always looks more colorful and artsy when its not in your own neighborhood. Or when you dont have to sit on a subway seat or ferry bench that looks wet with spray paint.
And by the way? Not every graffiti vandal was a subway Picasso. A lot of them were pretty lousy painters.
This should be a problem easy enough to address, as most of the graffiti vandalism takes place while the subway cars are at rest in storage yards, not when theyre actually rolling on the tracks. Lets increase efforts to crack down on these crimes, and to punish those caught doing it. If our newly progressive criminal justice system will allow it, that is. I have my doubts.
So, yeah, lets ring the bad old days bell again. Because its getting too darn easy to see the signs for ourselves without even looking.
Sure, the gritty, downtown, punk-rock, no-wave 1980s produced a lot of great art, music and fashion. But it was also a dirty and dangerous time to live in New York City.
We dont want to go back there again. Believe me.

Bed bugs are one of the most resilient bugs in the country. It's no surprise that they can travel in their owners belongings and make it on board a train. Am I the only one who's mad that they don't have to pay?
According to the New York Post, MTA subway trains in Queens were delayed recently because of bed bug sightings in the control tower.
The pest control website, Rest Easy Pest Control warns about the dangers of attracting unwanted parasites on a commuter train. According to their site, yes, bed bugs can travel and live on a train but the odds of themstay permanently are not likelyas they need to feed off people to survive. However, the odds of someone transferring bed bugs on a train, bus, or any form of public transportation isabsolutely possible.
