Local exterminator says bed bugs can end up in vehicles – WZZM13.com
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. Last week, a Texas, exterminator told a local news station he treats up to 10 rideshare vehicles a week for bed bugs.
But here in Grand Rapids, John Koval, the owner of Smitter Pest Control Management, says he hasn't seen bed bugs in rideshare vehicles yet.
RELATED: Dallas bed bugs expert says he treats 5 to 10 rideshare vehicles per week
"Actually, I take Uber all the time," said Koval, "and I havent had an issue."
Even though he hasn't seen it, he said that doesn't mean it's not happening. Koval actually gets many calls for vehicles with bed bugs. Those are typically semi trucks and medical transportation vans.
"Yeah, caregivers that pick up patients, things like that," said Koval, "that have had bed bugs at their house. We've gotten some things from caregivers. So, we try to educate them, put a sheet over their seats."
As for the semi trucks, he said the bed bugs most likely reside in mattresses or other bedding the drivers bring along to sleep during long trips.

In his car inspections, he first checks the backseat. Especially in the case of rideshare vehicles or cabs, this is where the bed bugs might be. That's because they usually come attached to a passenger.
"Head rests, you can find them there," said Koval, "When you're sitting there, someone could have them on their collar when they're sitting in your vehicle."
Also check the cracks of seats, and peel back the plastic surrounding the seat. The bed bugs can lodge themselves in there.
If you find bed bugs in your vehicle, call a professional to chemically treat the car.
Koval said it's still more common to get bed bugs in your home or in a hotel. He receives five or six calls a week to exterminate bed bugs in Grand Rapids.

Bed bugs in Canada: Why this summer may be the worst ever …
Canada's bed bug problem is worse than ever, as experts say the pesky little bloodsuckers are multiplying in record numbers in cities and smaller communities across the country.
Pest control experts say the frequency of bed bug reports has shot up 20 per cent since last year, as the blood-sucking, rapidly-reproducing insects have continued to spread. Mike Heimbach of Abell Pest Control says that increase has been a steady, "compounding growth" in the last six years. And it shows no sign of letting up.
"They've really got a good foothold in Canada and the United States, and we don't see that changing any time soon," Heimbach told CTV's Canada AM on Monday morning. He added that while the bugs were initially an urban problem, they've spread to rural and less-populated areas in recent years.
Heimbach also stressed that bed bug infestations have no link to socioeconomic status.
"Anyone can get bed bugs," he said. "The challenge that we see is that certain people can't afford to get rid of them."
A bed bug is about the size, shape and colour of an apple seed, three millimetres long and oval-shaped, with reddish-brown colouring. When found hiding in the seams of mattresses, the insects are visible to the naked eye. They only emerge to feed late at night. Their bite is similar to a mosquito bite, Heimbach said, leaving behind an itchy welt in the spot where they draw blood from the skin.
The insects spread by hitchhiking in bags and on clothes, but they can also be hiding in discarded furniture and electronics that people unwittingly bring into their homes.
Aside from the small, red bites, there are other identifiable signs of a bed bug infestation. Heimbach said a quick check of your mattress seams and headboard can reveal many telling signs, from leftover insect husks and little black droppings, to blood spots on the mattress.
"They know how to live unseen," Heimbach said. Spotting one of the bugs is, of course, another sign of infestation, he said.
"The key is to learn to identify them and to act quickly if you get them."
Attempting to get rid of bed bugs yourself with over-the-counter bed bug sprays can actually make the problem worse, Heimbach said, as the spray can agitate the insects and drive them to spread out, widening the infestation.
"You can't get rid of them," he said. "You have to call an exterminator."
Heimbach called it a "real skill" to stop a bed bug infestation, as it requires the use of special vacuums, steam, residual spray, and diatomaceous earth.
Peak bed bug season is typically between June and October, when weather is warmest and the insects reproduce fastest, Heimbach said. Bed bugs like to hide in bags and on clothing, making them easily transferrable and more likely to spread in the high-travel summer season.
Bed bug numbers have been steadily on the rise in recent years, going up by an estimated eight per cent annually, Heimbach said.
"The problem, I think, is growing," he said.
Ontario's bed bug information site offers tips for identifying and dealing with a bed bug infestation at home. The site also offers tips for avoiding a bed bug infestation in the first place.
It recommends keeping your home clean and vacuumed, and advises you seal all cracks and crevices in your house so no bugs can get in. Thoroughly inspect any used clothing you buy, and don't bring home discarded furniture or electronics, as they are prime hiding places for bed bugs.
When travelling, check the bed in your hotel room for blood spots and other signs of bed bugs. Also keep clothes in oversized sealable plastic bags to avoid picking up bed bug hitchhikers, and inspect your luggage before you leave.
And if you do find bed bugs at home, Heimbach has one bit of advice: call an expert.

Texas Exterminator Treats ‘5 to 10’ Rideshare Vehicles for Bed Bugs Each Week – The Drive
You might not think it when stepping into your ride to work, party, or the airport, but ridesharing is a dirty business. Passengers, some with questionable hygiene, enter and exit vehicles all over the world at all hours of the day, amounting to an insane 14 million rides per day. This high volume not only moves people to and from their destination but also their insect passengers: bedbugs. According to one exterminator in Texas, these tiny ride-sharing stowaways are single-handedly padding his bottom line.
Dallas-Forth Worth is one of the most bed bug-infested cities in the nation, topped only by New York City and Philadelphia. But for Don Brooks, owner of Doffdon Pest Control, the pesky parasites been a profit center, especially as ride-sharing services have expanded the city's transportation infrastructure.
In an interview with local news station WFAA, Brooks explained that his business regularly treats cars used in ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft.
"I probably do five to 10 rideshare cars per week," said Brooks. "Drivers either see bed bugs, someone complained, or they were suspicious of a customer and just want to make sure."
Brooks goes on to mention that infestations usually start when a bed bug crawls off of a person. That means, if a person is carrying a bed bug on their clothes or in their purse, they could spread the bugs into the rideshare without even knowing it. Before the owner of the vehicle notices that their vehicle is infested, the bugs could hitch a ride home with any passenger. Couple that with the fact that these insects can live upwards of a year without feeding on blood, and you've described a rather disastrous scenario.
For $250, drivers of these rideshare vehicles can have their cars tented by Brooks' mobile extermination fleet. He also offers a cheaper solution to spray the vehicles with liquid pesticides.
The tenting method used by Brooks is commonly used to eliminate bed bugs in homes and vehicles. According to Terminex, a "hot box" extermination method involves heating an environment above the lethal threshold for the bugs between 117 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a car left in direct sunlight on a sunny 77-degree day will reach these temperatures within about 60 minutes, but that might not always be successful.
Still, in an industry where any person can order up a car, there are risks to be had. Some law offices even offer their services for people who transfer bed bugs to their home from an infested rideshare. It's a disheartening idea, but Brooks says not to overthink it. He offers some friendly advice to anybody who thinks that they may have been exposed in a rideshare car:
"If you feel suspicious, just throw your clothes in the dryer for 50 minutes on high heat. Then it's best to hop in the shower."
