How to identify and treat bed bug bites – Insider – INSIDER

Bed bug bites are itchy, annoying, and just plain creepy. Although the bites are generally harmless, it's important to get rid of bed bugs, otherwise they will keep biting you.

Meanwhile, there are a few at-home treatment methods you can use to relieve the itchiness from your bed bug bites. If those don't work, you may want to see your doctor for stronger, prescription medication.

Here's how you can recognize bed bug bites and treat them effectively.

Bed bug bites appear as small red marks on light skin, and could appear as small dark spots on skin that is darker shades, says Sharleen St. Surin-Lord, MD, medical director at Visage Dermatology and Aesthetics Center in Washington D.C.

Usually, they'll appear in clusters of 3 to 5 bites in a zig-zag pattern that reflects where the bug has moved on your body. Although bed bugs can bite anywhere, the bites tend to be concentrated on the abdomen and arms, St. Surin-Lord says.

Bed bug bites tend to be a little smaller than mosquito bites, though it may be difficult to tell them apart from flea bites.

"The difference is that you normally can see the fleas jumping around or the mosquitos, after they have bitten you," St. Surin-Lord says. "Bed bugs are a little more clandestine."

This comparison table can help you diagnose your type of bug bite:

The major symptoms of bed bug bites typically include redness and itchiness.

You can treat these symptoms by first washing the bite site with soapy water to remove any dirt or debris. Then, you can try these at-home remedies:

The itching from bed bug bites can last for up to two weeks, St. Surin-Lord says. That's often prolonged if the infestation hasn't been addressed and the person continues to get new bites.

If you're dealing with severe itchiness despite using the remedies above, you can reach out to your doctor for a more powerful prescription anti-itch cream.

In some cases, St. Surin-Lord prescribes oral steroids to people who have severe itching caused by bed bug bites. The oral steroids can reduce inflammation and itchiness in people who don't get relief from topical creams. They can also help prevent further health complications from the overwhelming itchiness.

"Bedbugs become dangerous when a large part of the body is affected, causing intense itching and scratching, leading to open, wounded, bleeding skin," St. Surin-Lord says. "This now creates a portal for bacteria and skin infections."

Though rare, if you develop a fever alongside your bites, you should check in with your doctor, since that could indicate an underlying infection, St. Surin-Lord says.

Although bed bug bites are generally harmless, they can be very uncomfortable. If you're not getting relief from at-home treatments, reach out to your doctor.

In addition, it's important to treat the infestation and get rid of the bed bugs they will likely keep biting people until they are professionally exterminated.

"No matter what you decide to do, you must rid your home of the bed bugs," St. Surin-Lord says. "If you were at a hotel and feel that you were bitten in their bed and were diagnosed with bed bugs, you should contact that hotel so that they have their rooms treated."

How to get rid of bed bugs fast and 3 signs you have an infestation – Insider – INSIDER

Bed bugs are small insects that feed on human blood. Since they're less than a quarter of an inch long, they're almost impossible to spot. But they can be found anywhere, from houses to nursing homes and hotels.

"Normally the first signs of bed bugs are bites," says Rick Young, owner of UK-based Young's Pest Control.

The tell-tale sign is small bites clustered in a group or line on your skin.Although bed bug bites are itchy, they're usually harmless.

"In the vast majority of cases, bed bugs are a nuisance rather than genuinely dangerous to health," says Sreedhar Krishna, a dermatologist at TalkHealth London.

Still, most people who have bed bugs want them gone as soon as possible. Here's how to spot the signs of bed bugs and get rid of them quickly and effectively.

Bed bugs usually live in or around your bed, and they commonly hide in the creases and seams of mattresses or upholstery. However, it's rare to actually spot a bed bug.

"Sometimes it can be very hard to tell if you have bed bugs as they remain in hiding places through the day time and only come out at night to feed when we are in a deep sleep," says Young.

Instead of looking for bugs, you should look for signs of a bed bug infestation. These can include:

Treating bed bugs can be complex and time consuming, especially since infestations are usually severe by the time people notice it.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends certain do-it-yourself remedies.

In addition, our colleagues at Insider Reviews have put together a list of the best products to get rid of bed bugs.

You can try these before hiring an exterminator to save money, but you should note that professional extermination is a more effective (albeit costly) treatment.

Exterminators use the same tools heat or pesticides but they have access to higher-quality equipment that can work more quickly and effectively.

"There are a number of home remedies which one can try, but these are unlikely to eradicate the problem," Krishna says. "This is because bed bugs can hide in very tricky to reach areas and so professional help is often required."

In most cases, exterminators will have to come back multiple times to get rid of the bed bugs. The EPA has additional guidance on selecting a pest control company. After the extermination is complete you should continue to monitor for signs of bedbugs for at least two weeks.

If you suspect you have bed bugs, don't carry bedding or clothing into other areas of your house. This can help keep the bed bugs contained to one site, Young says.

Bed bugs are creepy, but they're mostly harmless and there are effective ways to get rid of them. Remembering that can help you stay calm if you notice the signs of a bed bug infestation in your home.

"You never need to panic if you have bed bugs," Young says. "There are qualified people and correct methods of safely exterminating your problem."

Worst Experience Ever- BED BUGS – Review of La Concha …

Just got back this evening and I could not wait to write my review. The hotel is beautiful. When you walk in the Lobby there is a distinct fresh smell.

Check in: we arrived at 11 am and asked to check. Unfortunately the rooms were not yet ready. We were able to store our luggage and we were able to use the private dressing/ restroom. The rest room has storage lockers for things you dont want to leave for the valet. Beach: As we walked through the resorts, we saw three pools and a hot table. Theres an open air restaurant there as well. The beach was spectacular.

I received a call at 130 that our rooms were ready. The rooms were all on the 5th floor. Yamileth, the person working the front desk made sure we were all together. My room was the king ocean front. The room was so clean and modern. The king size bed faced the glass window right in front of the ocean. There were two soft robes in the closet. Housekeeping comes rather late in the day, after 12-1. I think the timing may be due to the fact that the staff may want to let guest sleep in. I did leave a few dollars for the housekeeping services and they did a wonderful job.

The beach was a few steps outside the lobby. On the way to the beach you can refill your water bottle and grab towels. The beach was cleaned each evening and even refreshed during the day. You can tell the staff really care about the facility. Each day the attendant set up the chairs and umbrella. There were complimentary but we would tip him 5.00 per day.

I could go on and on but this was by far one of my best vacations!! I cant wait to come back.

Bed Bug Claims By Florida Tenants | About Florida Law

Last Update: 10/3/19

Get Compensation From Your Landlord When Bed Bugs Are Found in Your Apartment, Leased Home, Condo or Vacation Rental.

In Florida, the obligation of a residential landlord to a tenant with regard to providing a clean and safe living condition is governed by Florida statute and Florida court opinions this obligation includes renting in a large apartment complex, single-family home, vacation rental or condo.

Most bed bug related landlord-tenant disputes stem from the landlords lack of knowing how to deal with an infestation in an apartment and from not having a coherent bed bug policy as to proper cleaning, extermination and the hiring of certified experts to address an infestation. (Bombing bed bugs, if done incorrectly, can simply lead to the bed bugs spreading to other areas of the home or apartment units in the complex.)

Bed bugs have been found in high-end apartment complexes and vacation resorts and their presence is not determined by the cleanliness of the living conditions where they are found.

According to Florida statute 83.51, unless agreed in writing, the landlord of an apartment complex is required to exterminate for bedbugs. Furthermore, Florida statute 83.56 states if a landlord materially fails to comply with 83.51 within 7 days after delivery of written notice by the tenant specifying the noncompliance and indicating the intention of the tenant to terminate the rental agreement by reason thereof, the tenant may terminate the rental agreement.

However, be aware, going down this road can lead to an issue with the landlord not returning your security deposit.

Unfortunately, most renters insurance doesnt cover claims related to maintenance issues. Thats because the costs associated with eliminating bed bugs is considered part of standard home maintenance.

Thus, Florida landlords and property managers need to properly maintain their premises, including having a maintenance program that looks for and properly treats any bed bug infestation.

Due to the invasive nature of bed bugs (they can lay several eggs per day), an infestation can lead to personal injury claims against a property owner and/or other interested parties (i.e. leasing and rental agents and property management companies).

If a tenant, shows signs of a bite, from a small bite mark to a serious allergic reaction, then the landlord, property manager, or leasing agency, may be held liable for those injuries. In Florida, landlords have a duty to provide habitable living conditions (some duties can be contracted away check your lease).

Be aware, bed bugs bites can resemble spider bites and mosquito bites. Thats why we recommend that you see a doctor to determine the exact type of bite you have. Often times, people learn that those innocent looking bites are in fact caused by bed bugs.

Further, a claim for damages in a bed bug lawsuit can be significant, particularly if the residential tenant has engaged the help of a mental health professional for severe emotional distress. In addition, a tenant can recover damages for his or her:

To this end, a tenant should take pictures or video of his or her bites and collect evidence of the infestation, including capturing a bed bug, if possible.

Also, a tenant should:

If you are dealing with a bed bug issue in your apartment, a good piece of advice is to speak with an experienced Florida real estate lawyer to learn about your rights, including what information you will need to make a claim and the amount of damages you may be able to recover. Most real estate lawyers, like Larry Tolchinsky, offer a free initial consultation (over the phone or in person, whichever you prefer) to answer your questions.

Two B.C. cities crack top 25 most bedbug-infested cities …

Winnipeg, Vancouver and St. Johns dont have much in common except when it comes to being ridden with bed bugs, according to a national pest control company.

On Tuesday, Orkin Canada released its annual list of top 25 Canadian cities dealing with the pesky bugs, based on the number of bed bug treatments the company performed in each location from January to December of last year.

Toronto received top honour of being the nations top bed bug city for 2019, followed by Winnipeg and Vancouver.

The only other B.C. city to receive the dubious honour included Burnaby, ranked 19th.

Entomologists say that bed bugs are extremely efficient hitch hikers, and can move easily across a room and climb onto luggage or anything left on a bed in just one night.

Orkin suggests keeping all luggage elevated on metal luggage racks while youre on vacation and away from soft furnishings.

Bed bugs cannot easily climb metal surfaces, so they make an ideal overnight spot for your suitcase, the company suggests. Keep the rack away from the walls and any wooden furniture.

RELATED: Bedbugs are here to stay what can we do about it?

Bed bugs thrive in dark, cool places with long-term access to humans. They can also be found on airplane and train seats, buses or in rental cars, Orkin said. They can lay up to five eggs in one day.

Upon returning home, luggage should be left in the garage and all clothing run through the dryer at the highest appropriate temperature for 15 minutes.

To find bed bugs, homeowners can inspect beds, soft furnishings and framed pictures thoroughly and look for insects, blood stains, dead bugs and eggs.
