Pre-treatment Procedures
Once a bed bug has been positively located and identified, treatment (e.g., pesticide application) will be necessary to rid the building of the pests. Control actions should be instituted in the immediate area, within 24 hours if possible. The office manager/area director, facility manager, and licensed pest control applicator should determine the scope (e.g., size of area, materials affected) requiring treatment. The treatment area may be the original isolation space or an expanded area as identified through the inspection.Once the size of location is determined, the space must be prepared for pesticide treatment. When possible, the following preparation procedures should be taken:
Only pesticides approved for use against bed bugs by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts may be legally applied.Further, the pesticide applicator conducting the treatmentmust hold a current licensefor pesticide application in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The most common room treatments include liquid and aerosol insecticides.Based on the experience of DPH/BEH staff, the most common and effective chemical products used in treating office space includes:
These pesticides are designed for targeted application and will not be applied to any desk surface or personal belongings.By implementing the treatment preparation procedures, staff can facilitate a successful treatment and prevent any potential for unintended treatment of personal items that may be left on the floor.
As mentioned, treatment of an office requires not only preparation of the space but also coordination of staff to be away from the office. During application of these products, the treatment areasmustbe vacant. These pesticides, Temprid SC in particular, must be allowed todry for 4 hoursfollowing application.During the drying time, no access to the treated areas is permitted. It is important that staff are made aware of these restrictions, and building and agency management should ensure the necessary arrangements are made.To limit building occupant exposure and allow appropriate time for post-treatment procedures, it is recommended that the pesticides be applied on Fridays after hours or over the weekend.
Following treatment of an office space, arrangements should be made with the building manager to ensure that the treated spaces are cleaned properly.Cleaning should include the following:
As mentioned, during the pre-treatment processes, items that may require chemical treatment should be gathered and placed into file boxes or heavy-duty (2-mil thick) contractor bags.Boxes should then be carefully placed into contractor bags. All bags should be placed in a second bag, in case the primary bag is punctured. These bags should be moved to a storage area that does not share ventilation with occupants. If a storage area cannot be secured, consideration should be given to renting a storage container that can be placed outside, away from passersby.Once items have been located to an appropriate storage space, the licensed pest control provider can begin to treat the materials using chemical fumigants strips.
The fumigant strips MDPH/BEH staff are most familiar with are the Nuvan ProStrips. The active ingredient in the Nuvan ProStrip is dichlorvos. Dichlorvos is used to protect stored products from insects. This product is designed to treat adult and nymph bed bugs, as well as bed bug eggs within the confines of the sealed bag.Once the strip is opened, the gases released from the pesticide product diffuse through the materials to inactivate bed bugs. While some studies have documented neurologic effects from dichlorvos, such effects involved very high exposure levels. It is important to follow the procedures outlined above (e.g., placing materials in two heavy-duty contractor bags, placing bags in a secure storage area) to prevent staff from potential exposure.
The licensed pest control provider will place fumigant strips into each bag and take appropriate steps to tie and seal the bag openings once the strips are in place.A building manager shall provide the means to secure the storage area or be available to secure the storage area after the licensed pest control provider has completed bag fumigation.
Fumigated materials must remain in place for a minimum of 7 days.It is recommended that bags containing fumigated materials be allowed to sit for two weeks.Following treatment, the licensed pest control provider must open each bag, and the bags must be allowed to ventilate for 2 hours. During the ventilation process, the licensed pest control provider will examine these bags for evidence and condition of bed bugs.
Immediately following the treatment, staff should remain vigilant and report any further sightings of bed bugs. The steps outlined above inMonitoring and Preventionshould serve as guidance for all occupants of an office space. Two weeks following the initial chemical treatment, a licensed pest control provider should thoroughly inspect the treated area to identify any further bed bug activity. If live bed bugs are observed, the licensed pest control provider may recommend second chemical treatment of the office space. Whether at the two- or four-week mark following the initial treatment, it is recommended that a second pesticide application be made to ensure thorough treatment and elimination of bed bugs.
The services of bed bug detecting dogs may be employed one month following application. The dog can serve as an additional means for identifying further bed bug activity. Work with the pest control company providing pest management services regarding these follow-up inspections and activities. Building managers and area directors should continue to report bed bug-related activities (e.g., inspections, treatments) to their Agency Director and Agency Human Resources Representative, as well as DCAMM and MDPH/BEH.

Bed Bugs! What You Need to Know | The Bug Man
Bed bugs are being discovered on a daily basis here in the Middle Tennessee region. In houses, apartments, hotels and even retail outlets, it appears that everyone is a target. Bed bugs have been feeding on humans since the beginning of recorded history. The bed bugs were nearly eliminated from the United States until the past ten years. Now we hear reports of them on a daily basis. I am going to discuss how you may transport the bed bugs, ways you can identify the bed bugs, and steps you can take to help prevent an infestation.
First, we need to be able to identify a bed bug. The bed bug is nocturnal, or active at night. They hide in cracks and crevices until the lights go out, then they come out and hunt for a blood meal. The bed bugs do leave behind signs that they are present. If you pull back the bedding on a mattress or bedspring, you want to look for rust colored staining on the mattress, usually along the seams and edges, or between the mattress and boxspring. You also may see live, active bed bugs when you are searching! Also, look at the cracks and crevices around the headboard. You may end up staring one in the eyes! If you find bed bugs at a hotel, I would request a different room immediately. If bed bugs are discovered at your home, it is time to call in the professionals.
A few tips on traveling to a hotel: A. Dont place your luggage on the bed, keep it on the opposite wall away from the bed. B. Check the mattress and headboard as described above as soon as you arrive at the room. C. Leave, with your bags, as soon as you find evidence of bedbugs. You might even take a few photos with your phone to document what you find as management may need to see proof.
Now, let us talk transportation. How are you going to move these bed bugs into your home? Unfortunately, the bed bug is a master at hitching a ride. The bed bug can be transported in a purse, on electronics, in clothing, bedding, personal belongings, and even in your car. We have had reports of bed bugs joining the party by traveling to a sleepover in a sleeping bag or backpack of young children. I suggest that you are very careful about buying used furniture, clothing, and appliances from thrift stores, yard sales, or as a gift from a friend. Unless you know the place is bed bug free, you are taking a huge risk. We have heard from many customers stories of a friend or relative moving in and bringing an infestation of bed bugs with them. Or, they say how they got a great deal on a bedroom set, just to find out they now have a bed bug infestation. Saving a few dollars on the front end may cost you thousands later. Be careful and fully inspect the items before you take possession of them.
I receive questions about how to rid a home or room of bed bugs. While it can be done, it is tough to do it as a homeowner. A professional will have the proper tools, training, and products on hand to have the best success eliminating the bed bug infestation. It is always easiest to solve a bed bug problem when it first presents itself, so dont wait a few weeks or months to see if they just go away. The Bug Man has trained technicians ready to protect your home from bed bugs. Contact us for more information.

The cause and treatment for bedbugs | CAA-Quebec Residential
Bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) are visible to the naked eye. Brown and flat, measuring 4 mm to 7 mm (0.2 to 0.3 in) long, bedbugs are attracted to the vibrations, warmth, odours and CO2 that we give off as we breathe.
This insect got the name bedbug because it feeds on human blood in the middle of the night while we sleep, most often hiding in mattresses or elsewhere in the bedroom. Bites are often clustered in the areas of the body that are most exposed during sleep, such as the arms and legs.
After feeding for about 15 minutes, a bedbug will retreat into hiding for about a week. Bedbugs are extremely resilient and can survive in a dormant state for months on end without food.
Females lay two to four eggs per day, depositing them inside objects, cracks in furniture and floors, crevices along baseboards, etc. As an infestation intensifies, the colony grows beyond the bedroom to other rooms in the house and, potentially, to neighbouring houses. Bedbugs travel inside wall and floor cavities, inside ducts and along pipes and electrical wires.
Bedbugs leave stains on bedding and mattresses. (Brown stains are from blood after bites; black stains are the insects fecal matter.)
Like many other invaders, this species spreads because of widespread international travel and exchanges of goods. Bedbugs can be found in suitcases, fabric, furniture, cargo vehicles, etc.

Top 10 Worst States For Bed Bugs | Which State Has The …
If you have ever encountered bed bugs in your home or hotel room
You might be wondering how they got there.
They can quickly get into your luggage and travel back home with you, causing an infestation that can be a nightmare to deal with.
Every state has their problems, those of which can affect you as you travel from state to state.
So its natural to wonder
How do you know if the state youre in has a high rate of bed bug infestations?
How do I minimize the risk of encountering bed bugs?
What states have the lowest number of infestations?
In this article we will answer these questions and run through the list of the top bed bug infested states and cities.
On that note lets dive in.
Unfortunately, there have been reported bed bug cases in EVERY state in America.
Not a single state is immune to infestation.
For years now, the number of cases have been growing, with thousands of reported cases in 2019.
Though the problem isnt only affecting America.
In fact.
Bed bugs are not native to America, and they have spread to every continent nonetheless.
(except Antarctica)
Thats because they are avid hitchhikers.
Bed bugs tend to climb into peoples luggage or belongings, allowing them to quickly spread as people travel.
As transportation becomes more efficient, people are traveling more and more. This leads to bed bugs being spread faster than ever.
This is the reason bed bugs have made a major comeback in the 21st century.
That being said
Bed bugs dont discriminate. They dont care about state borders and cleanliness.
Theyre not attracted to dirt, so they can be anywhere Whether it be run down apartments or 5-star hotels.
These pests have been significantly multiplying over the past 3 decades.
In the early 20th century, bed bugs were a very common problem. But that was before we had all the pesticides that eradicated them
Or so we thought.
From about the 1950s all the way to the 1990s
There were very few cases of bed bugs in the US. The pesticides did the work, and we almost entirely forgot about the little critters.
But then they came back with a vengeance, utterly resistant to the chemicals that used to kill them, reproducing at a lightning-fast pace.
From about 2015 onwards, the number of bed bug cases have exploded.
The popular pest control company Orkin, has recently published reports on the worst states for bed bugs, as they do every year.
For 3 years in a row The number 1 Bed Bug State is.
Maryland.
Which continues to be one of the most bed bug infested states. Mostly thanks to cities like Baltimore and Washington D.C.
Indiana and Georgia originally werent in the top 10, but since 2019 infestations in these states have grown.
With Indianapolis and Atlanta holding the 9th and 10th spot, of bed bug infested cities respectively. .
Rounding out the top 5 we have Illinois and California. You can begin to see a trend here, whereas states with major cities are more infested.
(Due to population density)
To sum up here are the top 10 most bed bug infested states:
Here are the top 10 cities in the US with the most cases of bed bugs in 2020 (Source: Orkin)
To help you get a bigger picture of the spread of bed bugs across the United States
Here are some bed bug maps that are eye-opening.
Based on a bed bug infestation map published in 2016:
It shows that New York City had the most reported bed bug incidents at the time a staggering 4,490 reports.
Thats a massive difference from the figures of Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, which had 485, 446, and 403 reports, respectively.
You can see that the east coast is hit by far the hardest.
This is because the east coast is much denser than the rest of the country. There are also many popular tourist, and business travel destinations in these states.
This map also has powerful statistics about where bed bugs are found.
Here are the top locations where bed bugs are located by percentage (2015 Survey):
For more recent insight, we also looked at a 2019 map of bed bug infestations.
Its almost as if youre looking at the same map.
And as you can see from the top 10 list above, things are not so different in 2020. The share of states being hit the hardest is consistent, the only difference is that the sheer number of cases have gone up everywhere.
You can see that some of the states have traded places, but the problem still exists everywhere.
If youre planning on moving to another city in the US or youre planning a vacation, you may not want to consider cities that have seen a jump in cases.
Here are the 10 cities with that have experienced significant growth in bed bug infestations.
For the first time, Toledo and Myrtle Beach made the top 50 list according to Orkin.
Though both Ohio and South Carolina have hard hit states for years.
As mentioned, the degree to which a state is infested has a lot to do with population density. Similar to infectious disease, bed bugs spread more when there is more person to person interaction.
Therefore, here are some of the states with the lowest numbers of bed bug infestations.
Though infestations in the above states is relatively less
Its still important to be cautious about bed bugs when traveling.
For example, If youre staying at a hotel you should properly inspect the hotel room for bed bugs before spending the night.
If you happen to encounter bed bugs anywhere across the US, be it your apartment or hotel, we can connect you with a lawyer to discuss your options.
If youve suffered bed bug bite injuries or experienced a bed bug infestation in your residence due to someone elses negligence
You may be able to file a lawsuit and potentially get financial compensation.
Keep in mind that our lawyers can only represent you on a pre-litigation basis only. That means we can only assess your situation to help you determine if you have a case.

Update:1st flr will remain closed Fri for completion of bed bug treatment, entire bldg to be closed Sat for further precautionary treatment
On Saturday, the entire building will be closed as computers and tables in the affected area will be removed and processed in a heat chamber, she said.
Fifty chairs will be removed and treated off-site.
Murphy said there is nothing to suggest bed bugs had infested any library books, but as a precaution, staff have asked the company to check the rest of the library.
That way we can feel really comfortable and confident when we open on Sunday morning, she said.
This is not the first time bed bugs have been reported in the library. Last winter, the fifth floor was treated after reports of bed bugs surfaced.
The library, which opened in 1951 and is the largest on campus and the second largest research library in Canada, is expected to reopen at 11 a.m. Sunday.
We want to reassure our community of users it is highly localized, its being treated and we are, as a precaution, checking to make sure everything else is fine, she said.
