Bed Bugs: Department of Health – Rhode Island

Bed bugs are insects that feed on blood and can survive months without feeding. Their bites are often itchy, and sometimes painful.

Bed bugs are a growing problem everywhere. By spraying for insects less often, and using less dangerous chemicals when we do spray, our homes are safer for our families but also less toxic for bed bugs.

Bed bugs are hitchhikers. They travel by hiding in luggage, clothing, beds or furniture. This can make bed bugs a special problem for hotels, apartments, and when using second-hand furniture. Once bed bugs are introduced, they spread from room to room throughout a building. Keeping a clean home can limit cockroach and rodent problems, but will have little effect on bed bugs.

People sensitive to bites can have a raised, red swelling at each bite site or may develop a sensitivity that can include nervousness, and sleeplessness. Symptoms may also appear several days after being bitten. Bed bugs' feces, casings, and other materials can be asthma triggers in some people. Although bed bugs feed on blood, there is no evidence that bed bugs transmit disease.

Bed bugs vary in size, and in color, from a red-brown to a light brown. Adult bed bugs are 1/4 inch, or about the width of a pencil.

Bed bugs move quickly. The females lay eggs in cracks and other hidden areas. The eggs appear tiny, white, and are hard to see without a magnifying glass. Bed bugs are active at night and hide within 5 to 20 feet of where people sleep. They tend to gather in tiny crevices and other places, especially in mattresses, box springs, and head-boards.

Seeing two or more of these signs indicates that there is a bed bug problem in that room:

Your healthcare provider may prescribe antihistamines or corticosteroids to reduce allergic reactions, and/or suggest the use of antiseptic or antibiotic ointments to prevent infection.

It is best to hire a professional pest control firm. They will carefully inspect all places where bed bugs may hide and use an approved insect spray in cracks and other hiding places. Do not use any insecticide on a mattress unless the label specifically discusses application to a mattress. Most household sprays are not suitable for application to mattresses. Any infected items like mattresses or upholstered furniture must be thrown out or treated. Treatments must be very thorough or bed bugs will soon be back. Methods to control bedbugs populations include:

To make sure that bed bugs dont come back, you should:

The Rhode Island Housing Maintenance and Occupancy Code states that if the infestation is limited to a single dwelling unit, extermination is the responsibility of the occupant. However, if the infestation exists in two or more units, or in shared or public areas of a building with two or more units, then extermination is the responsibility of the building owner. Contact the Minimum Housing Program of your city or town if your landlord or building owner has not addressed a bed bug infestation that involves a common area or two or more units.

The 10 Best Bed Bug Exterminators in New York, NY 2020

If you are concerned you have a bed bug infestation, look for physical signs of their presence. Bed bugs love to hide in small, dark spaces and typically come out to feed (generally on human blood) after dark although they will come out in daylight if hungry enough. The Environmental Protection Agency states that indications of an infestation can include seeing shed exoskeletons of bed bugs, rusty spots on your bedding (which are either bug droppings or bloodstains), live bed bugs, bed bug egg casings, a sweet and musty odor (if the infestation is severe), and evidence of bites on your skin.

To spot bed bugs, look in and along mattress seams and bedding, in curtain and furniture folds, inside cracks or crevices in the walls, behind picture frames and mirrors, under loose wallpaper seams, on recently used luggage or backpacks, inside electronics, and inside clothing or cluttered areas such as closets. If you see signs of bed bugs, be careful not to disturb them too much as you dont want them scattering to other parts of your house.

Bedbugs are an insidious neighbor | News | themountaineer.com – The Mountaineer

Garron Bradish, the countys environmental health supervisor, fields many complaints about bedbugs.

He has advice to offer to callers, but can do nothing to force landlords to address a bedbug infestation.

Actually, they arent considered a public health threat because they dont spread any kind of disease, he said. Theyre more of a nuisance.

Bedbugs are tiny insects, less than a fifth of an inch, that live on human blood, hide in dark crevices and can go up to a year without eating, all the while laying eggs and increasing their numbers.

They are hard to spot because they dont like light, but evidence of their presence is detected in bites left behind on humans or animals.

The presence of bedbugs is unrelated to cleanliness, according to experts. They find their way into a dwelling through furniture, clothing or luggage. Bedbugs are capable of surviving on cats, dogs or birds, but prefer a human host.

An inspector with the county environmental health office was one of several regulators who investigated conditions at the apartment of Regina Mathis in September. While there were plenty of roaches in the apartment, no bedbugs were found, which wasnt surprising, Bradish said. Thats because bedbugs often dont come out in the daylight.

Once bedbugs have invaded an apartment complex, they are difficult to eradicate without treating all of the units.

Bedbugs travel through the walls, ducts or electrical outlets, Bradish said. They can move from apartment to apartment. Years ago they got into the Towers in Waynesville.

In that case, the infestation was treated and the problem was solved, he added.

While mattresses must be tossed, bedbugs can be killed through a heat treatment in some cases. Furniture cushions can be placed in black trash bags, and left in the sun or a trunk, for instance, and clothing can be washed in hot water and placed in a hot dryer.

But the best way to be sure they are gone is by using a chemical spray, Bradish said.

Kevin Hathorne, the technical director at Terminix Service in Columbia, South Carolina, said each bedbug situation is different and the control strategies depend on the severity of the problem.

Bedbugs dont care if a house is dirty or clean, he said. If there is a lot of clutter, it will make a situation a lot worse and a lot harder to get under control. It helps tremendously to get rid of clutter and clean up.

Bedbugs are small and extremely flat, he said, which means they can get into places such as microwave or television circuits or electronics places not traditionally associated with an infestation.

However, if a home is treated, items such as electronics, lamps, computers and other belongings must be cleaned or specially treated to prevent the chances of a re-infestation.

If the treatment area adjoins another apartment, units on either side of the infested unit must be treated, Hathorne cautioned, as bedbugs commonly use wall voids, electrical wire conduit lines and pipes to travel between apartments.

The most expensive but permanent solution is fumigation, where a tent is placed over the entire building that is sprayed and left vacant for three days.

Heat treatment, where a propane or electric powered unit pumps heat into a house, is effective, he said. Since the heat generators must remain outside, this option doesnt always work on upper floors, and the units cant be placed in a hallway.

In a situation like a several-story, multi-unit apartment complex, a multi-faceted approach would likely be needed, he said, and all tenants would definitely need to agree to comply.

If one resident isnt cleaning and washing bed clothes, over time that will have the possibility of spreading bedbugs back out, causing the situation to happen again, Hathorne said.

Spray treatment would likely be tailored according to the infestation level in each unit, he said, with preventative methods chosen for units not yet infested.

Getting bedbugs out of an apartment complex is difficult, Hathorne said.

Its a tough situation, especially when there are no laws to keep people responsible, he said. The longer it goes on, the worse the infestation gets.

Even if you spend the money to have your unit treated, units surrounding you can be a source of infestation. Its not a good situation.

BED BUGS IN PENNSYLVANIA Bed Bugs

Pennsylvania is slowly discovering millions of unwanted guests. Bed bugs a strain of insect that was previously eliminated in the United States have come back with a vengeance. Reports from major population centers in Pennsylvania have made it clear that the pests, which have become an annoyance in New York City, have spread west into Pennsylvanias biggest cities and major towns.

The bugs are fairly harmless they sleep during the day in the mattress of a bed, the cracks of home walls, and the comfortable pockets of space left during construction. But during the night, they exit the mattress and spend their time feasting on the homes inhabitants. Serious outbreaks of the bugs can lead to hundreds of bugs, and thats just in a single night.

Residents of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have been reporting the bugs at increased levels over the past twelve months, with reported cases increasing on a near weekly basis. Pest control businesses in the state have been working overtime on their bed bug cases, as the small bugs are particularly difficult to remove. Just ten years ago, they were unlikely to receive a single case annually.

While other states have experienced bed bug outbreaks on larger scales than Pennsylvania New York City and San Francisco are major hotspots the bugs have become more common in cities such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Small towns have also been affected by the annoying pests, although their lower residential density makes it less likely that the bugs can spread easily.

Weve gone in-depth in Pennsylvania, searching for the states largest bed bug infestations and news on the control of the bugs. Please see below for specific information on the cause of bed bugs, ways to remove the bugs from your residence, and the most frequent areas for bed bug reports in the state.

How are bed bugs spreading through Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania is a fairly diverse state. Home to both highly dense cities and a largely rural farm area, its not the perfect environment for bed bugs to spread easily. However, due to its large cities and its links to interstate transportation, bed bugs have spread from one area to another. The most common reason for the spread of bed bugs is travel, particularly from international tourists and local hotels.

Bed bugs are also spreading from other major cities on the East Coast. New York City is currently the countrys most frequently reported bed bug area, with hundreds of apartment complexes found to contain the pests. Due to unintentional transport in luggage, clothes, and other furniture, its now believed that Philadelphia Pennsylvanias largest city is the countrys second bed bug center.

Which cities are most at risk for bed bug infestation?

Pennsylvanias bed bug capital and one of the United States bed bug capitals is Philadelphia. A total of almost five-hundred bed bug cases have been reported over the last twelve months a large increase from previous levels. In 1990, pest control companies were unlikely to receive more than two or three calls annually. In 2010, many companies are tending to several cases on a daily basis.

The second-most likely area for bed bug activity is Pittsburgh, the states secondary city and one of its most important industrial centers. As one of the states major business and travel centers, hotels and short-term accommodation options make up a large portion of Pittsburghs bed bug complaint count. Several regional hotels have been forced to temporarily close in order to remove the bugs.

Why are bed bugs appearing so frequently in Pennsylvania?

The states temperate climate isnt an advantage when it comes to bed bug infestations. The bugs are relatively hardy and can live in even the chilliest of temperatures, although extreme heat has proven effective during eradication. Pennsylvanias largely urbanized population centers allow for the bugs to easily transfer from one person to another, particularly on public trains and busses.

Bed bugs in Philadelphia

Due to Philadelphias fairly public bed bug problem, businesses in the hotel industry have taken to fighting the pests head on. A recent conference at the Marriott Downtown explained the problem in simple terms to hoteliers, encouraging cleaning staff to examine mattresses and use dissolvable bags for laundry. While New Yorks hotels are faring worse, Philadelphia appears to be improving.

However, many of the citys residential areas are still home to bed bugs and other common pests. In contrast to previous decades, the amount of call outs for bed bugs has steadily risen over the past ten years in Philadelphia. New treatment options such as high-heat air blasting are proving effective, as the pests are immune to most chemical treatments and require repeated doses of commercial sprays.

Bed bugs in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh has experienced bed bug outbreaks for the last six years. The small bloodsuckers have appeared on and off the radar for the better part of a decade, with occasional outbreaks annoying both residents and apartment complex owners. While high-profile lawsuits have been filed in San Francisco and New York City aimed a major hotels, Pittsburghs hotel industry has yet to suffer.

However, the bugs are still a major annoyance for residents. While fewer apartment buildings and residential homes in Pittsburgh are infested, the severity of the infestations are as high as those in New York City and other large metropolitan areas. No commercial outbreaks have been reported this year, although several unnamed hotels have been affected by the pests.

Recent outbreaks and news coverage in Pennsylvania

Recent outbreaks in Pennsylvania have been relatively minor. The few cases that are reported on are from small residential buildings and isolated buildings, with commercial buildings and offices fairly free of the pests. While a number of hotels within the city are said to contain bed bugs, local media outlets have not named any specific chains, independent operators, or bed bug hot spots.
