How Many Different Types of Bed Bugs Exist? | Orkin

The common or household bed bug (Cimex lectularius) is found worldwide. These insects adapt well to human environments and typically live in temperate climates. A number of other related pests resemble bed bugs in habits and appearance.Proper identification usually requires magnification and experience with distinguishing the different species.

The tropical bedbug (Cimex hemipterus) also feeds on humans but prefers more tropical regions such as Florida.

Bat bugs (Cimex adjunctus) have also been observed intropical regions as well as more temperate areas. This species feeds primarily on bats, although they do sometimes feed on human hosts, especially if the preferred source is no longer present.

Located primarily in North America, theMexican chicken bug (Haematosiphon inodora) also closely resembles the common bed bug. However, these insects are typically found on poultry farms and choose bird species and domestic fowl as hosts.

Barn swallow bugs resemble bed bugs as well. Although barn swallow bugs feed primarily oncliff swallows and live in swallow nests, they have been known to enter human dwellings when bird migration occurs.

It is important to accurately identify bed bugs before beginning treatment of an infestation. Incorrect control methods will prove ineffective and may be harmful. Contact your local pest control experts to arrange an inspection and consultation.

Slog PM: The Seattle Times Backs Sarah Perry, Bed-Bug Submarine Hits Object but Who Knows Why, and Where Is That Record Shop Opening? -…

"Ahoy, mateys!" said the bed bugs. Courtesy the motherfucking Navy

Well! The Seattle Times Editorial Board and the Stranger Election Control Board agree. Vote Sarah Perry for King County Council.

FYI: The Stranger Election Control Board's general election endorsements come out next Wednesday, the same day ballots get mailed out.

Yesterday in Slog PM, Charles overviewed the racist mailer from Councilmember Kathy Lambert that targeted her colleague Councilmember Girmay Zahilay: Lambert seems to have stuck to her indignation. She told KING 5 it was "preposterous" that her actions were racist, saying, "I do a lot of work in Africa so if I had something against him because of his color I wouldn't be doing the work I do in Africa. She's had plenty of time to learn from her mistakes.

Gay City has a new home: They hope to move into the Pine Bellevue office building at 400 E Pine by the end of the year, reports Capitol Hill Seattle blog.

Sub flub: A Bremerton-based submarine called the USS Connecticut, described as "one of the U.S. Navy's most advanced and secretive submarines," hit an "object" while submerged in the South China Sea on October 2, the Navy announced today. 11 sailors were injured, although none of the injuries are life-threatening. Here's the Navy:

The submarine remains in a safe and stable condition. USS Connecticuts nuclear propulsion plant and spaces were not affected and remain fully operational. The extent of damage to the remainder of the submarine is being assessed. The U.S. Navy has not requested assistance. The incident will be investigated.

Maybe we can blame... bed bugs? The USS Connecticut has a history of nasty bed bugs. This is from March of this year:

It got so bad that some crew members took to sleeping in chairs or on the floor of the crews mess to escape the elusive bloodsuckers during their deployment, said one petty officer.

People were getting eaten alive in their racks, said the petty officer, who alleges that the infestation spread to several enlisted berthing spaces and at least one officer state room.

[...]

If someones sleep deprived because theyre in the rack getting eaten alive by bedbugs, he could fall asleep at (the controls) and run us into an underwater mountain, the petty officer said.

Just saying.

A new Senate Judiciary Committee report details the extraordinary lengths Trump went to in his attempt to overthrow the 2020 election, pushing GOP leaders across the country to declare massive voter fraud, and using intimidation tactics against the Justice Department to the point where there were almost mass resignations. Please, no Trump 2024.

Meanwhile Trump and his lawyers are advising his former aidesincluding Mark Meadows, Kash Patel, Dan Scavino, and Stephen Bannonto ignore subpoenas to appear before Congress and answer questions about the former president's involvement with the January 6 domestic terrorist attack on the capitol. (Good! We'd love to see all these guys in jail.)

Pfizer pharmaceutical is asking the FDA for emergency approval of their COVID vaccine for kids ages 5 to 11, and an FDA advisory committee has agreed to consider it at a meeting later this month.

Good luck trying to go to the San Juans: Crew shortages are leading to lots of cancellations.

Today in "things we don't talk about enough": "Artist puts coffin on Trump's Hollywood star to highlight preventable COVID-19 deaths."

People are eating up the news that William Shatner is headed to space, thanks to Jeff Bezos's Kent-headquartered Blue Origin: "Bezos reaches for a star," reads one New York Times headline out today, featuring snazzy lines, like: "The billionaire space race is happening, whether we choose to pay attention or not. Of course, the billionaires would prefer that we did."

We're no Musk fanboys, but we've been thinking about this exchange all week:

What do you call the neighborhood around the Seattle Center: Lower Queen Anne? Uptown? West Seattle Center? The question came up today because we mentioned there's a new record shop opening up in Queen Anne, and someone on Reddit complained we should've said Uptown.

The City calls it Uptown: Seattle City Councilmember Andrew Lewis proposed a resolution earlier this year to officially call that area Uptown. It passed 8-0 (Strauss didn't vote), and Google followed suit by updating its map. But culturally... the name doesn't seem to stick.

Nathalie Graham texted Councilmember Lewis about his resolution back in April: Here's what he said.

What do you say to people who think the change is dumb?

Lewis: "Uptown is in the process of forging its own unique identity separate from Queen Anne. They asked me to put forward a resolution affirming the Uptown name for the neighborhood. People are free to call it what they want, but its clear Uptowners want that to be the official name."

We're sticking with Lower Queen Anne: But we're open-minded about Uptown. That said, we don't have skin in this game; most of us live on Capitol Hill

Wait, wait, one last thing: Is Shaq in Uptown?

Bed Bugs in Hair Symptoms, Pictures & Get rid | Pestbugs

Having bed bugs in your hair can be a such worrying experience. Find out if these little creatures can hide in your mane, how they get in your hair, symptoms and ways to treat and get rid of them. Also, discover if they can bite your scalp and lead to hair loss.

Yes, can hide in your but they most likely wont stay or live there for a long duration of time.

This comes about when the bed bugs travel from any area of your bed especially the corners or the mattresses on which you sleep. This especially if you have them in your house or youve gone to an infested house. They are small but larger than lice meaning that you can detect them in your scalp and hair.

Bed bugs can get into your hair when you are sleeping probably from the infested bedding or your pillow. Once in your hair, they will suck blood but will not be able to live for long because the environment does not favor them. They in most cases prefer a warm environment.

Bed bugs do not enjoy being in your hair. Compared to fleas and lice and which have claws designed to make them live in the hair, the common bed bug lacks this modification and adaptation.

This therefore means it is hard for them to move from one point to another in your hair.

Attached are some pictures that show the presence of bed bugs in your hair. However, coming across pictures of the bed bug eggs in your hair is quite difficult.

Bed bugs will come out of their hiding places at night and then crawl into your hair. They will spend time in the hair where they can bite and suck blood. The bites from the bugs are never a problem but the nuisance and irritation they cause is the bother.

The signs and symptoms from bed bug bites are quite different from any other bite from an insect. Usually, their bites appear in straight rows as compared to bites from other insects that are found on the scalp.

To know that your hair is also infested, you may find some stains of blood on your pillows. Your scalp becomes raw and sore in the meantime.

Further, you may feel something crawling in your hair. You may end up having some anxiety of being bitten again, the moment you know that the bite was from a bed bug. It may lead to sleeplessness as well.

An offensive odor on your hair may also be a sign of the infestation of bed bugs in your scalp. This is accompanied with an increment of dark spots in your bed sheets and pillow cases.

You will have an extremely itchy scalp and as an addition, you will have red swellings on your neck, the cheeks and the forehead. You will also see the swellings on your hairline.

The presence of eggs in your scalp could also be an indication that the pests are present in your hair. The eggs are hard to detect and remove because they are very small and could stick to the roots of your hair.

When you detect bed bugs in your hair, it is prudent that you do everything possible to get rid of them. This is because they can irritate your scalp as they feed on your blood. They can further move to other warm areas of your body. There are a number of ways which you can employ to get rid of them.

Baking Soda

It is a very important remedy and it works by absorbing moisture from the bed bugs body. This thus dries the bed bug which eventually dies.

Cayenne Pepper

It is essential because of its antimicrobial properties. These are the key properties that make it able to kill the bugs. Use the stepwise approach below:

Sweet Flag

It is known to have anti-microbial properties and thus called calamus. The aromatic properties in the herb are the ones that repel the bugs away from your skin. You can get the flag from the shop and make a solution based on the instructions attached to the packet. Apply the solution to your hair and this will eliminate the bugs within a short time.

Bean Leaves

This herb is known to be a traditional Balkan method that can be used to trap bugs. What you have to do is to:

According to the research from the University of California Irvine and the University of Kentucky, researchers found out that the leaves are able to completely kill the bed bugs.

Can hair dryer kill bed bugs?

Hair dryers are able to kill bed bugs within a period of 30 seconds of continuous contact. What you have to do is to catch the bed bugs and then crush them in a paper of towel then blow dry them. Besides, blow drying your hair is good enough to rid your hair of the bugs.[1]

According to Carol Shipley of Shipleys Pest Control, the use of hair dryer is the best and probably the easiest way to get rid of bed bugs from your hair and even the furniture in your home.

Bed bugs in your hair is a source of real trouble. It will force you constantly and frequently to comb your hair as you undertake a normal washing of your hair. Treatment should always be the last resort when everything else fails to work.

There are various options that you can undertake to prevent the infestation or the colonization of your hair by the bed bugs.

The identification and detection of bed bugs in your hair can be done if you use the right tools and method. The bed bugs are small as well as their eggs but they appear white and the size of a pin 1/32 of an inch.

You can see them some other times using the eye but it is at other occasions hard to identify and therefore you would need a magnifying lens.

You cannot pick the bed bugs eggs with a vacuum because when they are laid, they have a film which makes them to stick. If you fail to kill the bed bugs eggs, you will end up having a re-infestation before the entire population is dealt with.

There are various treatment methods that you can employ to kill bed bugs and their eggs. The treatments range from chemicals to simple remedies.

Yes. In fact, they only bite the areas of your scalp that lacks hair or has little hair. They can live and colonize anywhere provided there is blood. In that regard, they can attach on your scalp and thus you will feel the bite as they suck the blood.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, you can treat the bites from the bed bugs if they dont show any serious reactions.

Wash the area with a lot of water and soap. This will prevent an infection of the skin and reduce any itchiness.

Apply some corticosteroid cream if the bites are itchy. Get a weaker corticosteroid which does not need a prescription from a local drug store.[2]

How are bed bugs linked to hair loss? The falling off of hair from your scalp is a secondary effect to the bed bug infestation. The primary one is the itching. During the infestation, you are likely to suffer Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and even anxiety.

In this case, your health will deteriorate and your hair will lack the basic nutrients. This therefore does not assure consistent growth and strength. With time, the hair will begin falling off. The bed bugs also feed on the blood that is supposed to circulate and nourish your scalp.

We Live Among Bedbugs and Cockroaches’: Family Denounces Condition of SF Apartment – NBC Bay Area

A family in San Francisco said they live among an infestation of cockroaches, bed bugs and the presence of mold in their apartment and have yet to received any help from the building manager.

"In more than 15 years they have not given us maintenance, every year as they should, they always say that they have no money and that they can't," said the tenant, through tears.

NBC Bay Area's sister station, Telemundo 48, tried to contact the building administration. However, so far they have not received a response.

The presence of mold is increasingly visible in the bathroom but the situation has reportedly worsened in the last month due to cockroaches and bed bugs.

"In my apartment we see like seven cockroaches, but if you go to the garage or the hallway, you can see like 10 to 15 large cockroaches," said the tenant, who did not want to be identified.

And although they have used poison and traps to fight this infestation of insects it has not been enough. So much so that one of the people who lives in the house had to go to sleep in the living room because his room is infested with bed bugs.

"All around the bed and you can say the whole room, we have killed approximately 50 bed bugs," said the tenant.

Those affected said that they have contacted the administration of the building, however, they have not received a response.

"They have come to evaluate us twice and they have not given us a solution, it's been a week," said the tenant.

The family indicated that the situation has caused them despair and depression. "We cannot sleep in peace because we know if something is going to bite us or come out," they explained.

California law requires apartment or rental homeowners to adhere to health and maintenance protocols, but these standards are sometimes difficult to meet in low-income or Section Eight housing.

Sometimes landlords don't have the money to invest in cleaning or maintenance, since the rent is below market and they have to prioritize that money over other things. Still, it's not right for them to ignore those complaints," said Gregory Brod, an attorney.

In the Bay Area, different organizations are in charge of helping and guiding tenants.

Here are several that you can contact:

These are the NYC hotels with the worst bed bug complaints – New York Post

This news really bites for out-of-towners dreaming of a New York City visit.

Some 188 local hotels, including 108 located within a one-mile radius of Times Square, have allegedly hosted some very unwanted guests in recent years: bed bugs.

Thats according to a skin-crawling new study from Pest Strategies, an online resource for pest removal tips and services.

To bring to light a report that really highlights hotels as the main transmission vector is important, said 30-year-old Shane Dutka, an operations manager at the Raleigh, NC-based portal, who helped compile the report. I think this is totally underreported. I think there are many, many bed bug cases that never reach [the news].

The studys biggest offender is the Queens County Inn and Suites in Long Island City, which has had 36-bed bug complaints since 2010 seven of them between January 2018 and February 2020.

The hotel, which didnt return a message seeking comment, received its most recent infestation complaint in January.

[Both our] beds were infested with bed bugs, claims an anonymous comment posted on The Bedbug Registry, a public database that tracks sightings of the creepy crawlers across the US and Canada. [My friend] was itching after breakfast and saw them crawling on the sheet when I turned over my cover they were so many as I turned over the cover they were everywhere on the walls ceiling etc and we were bitten all over.

Pest Strategies compiled bed bug reviews for 758 city properties from The Bedbug Registry, Bed Bug Reports and Tripadvisor. To determine the 10 most infested, the group compared each hotels all-time bed-bug complaint count against the number of bug-related reviews received between 2019 and 2021. Complaints including libel or inaccurate descriptions with no photo evidence didnt make the cut.

We do review these reviews and we make sure that we use our best judgment, Dutka. We tried our best to keep things as true and narrow as possible.

Midtowns Wellington Hotel, now closed until January 2022 due to a flood-related elevator replacement, ranked No. 2. It has 20 all-time bed bug complaints, the most recent of which came via Tripadvisor in November 2020, one month before the hotel temporarily shut.

The staff didnt want to come in and check when I called them in to show the bedbug, wrote the commenter. The manager wanted me to be out so she can send inspection. She claimed they couldnt find any but it was [a] total coverup.

Henry Demera, 46, the Wellingtons security director his department first responds to bed bug complaints to gather information told The Post the hotel gets daily extermination treatments.

In the rare instance that it is positive, we fumigate the room, he said. We have gone as far as to basically demo a room the hotel takes it very seriously.

No. 3 is The Bowery House in Nolita, which has had eight complaints since 2018 and didnt return messages seeking comment. Nor did the art deco Hotel Edison, which is steps from Times Square and came in at No. 5. Its most recent complaint came in December 2019, when a visitor from the United Kingdom alleged you could see the blood where they had bitten on the sheets.

They had mattress covers on [the beds], said 44-year-old Edison guest Donna Larrick. Visiting from Milwaukee, Wis., she was one of dozens of guests entering and leaving the busy hotel on a recent Wednesday. I always check.

Hotel visitors tend to bring in the critters on luggage or clothing and, as more people visit the Big Apple this year, complaints could worsen.

New York, because of a dense population and the amount of travel, its just so common to see [bed bugs]. Im sure itll only continue as we get out of COVID, said Dutka.

The rest is here:
