DEALING WITH BED BUGS IN CANADA : Bedbugs

RANT*

DOES CANADA NOT WANT ME TO GET RID OF MY BED BUGS?????

Proof:

Can't buy Cimexa or Nuvan strips... How am I going to treat my over 1500$ worth of engineering textbooks that I had intended to keep indefinitely. Or my other books. Or my shoes. Or my craft supplies. Or my blender. Or my TV!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH

Quebec rental law states that you cannot terminate your lease early unless you are able to negotiate with your landlord. Unfortunately my landlord is a huge company managing hundreds of rental properties in Montreal and though they have had my unit exterminated (4 times already since December) they are not properly dealing with the units adjacent to mine... Furthermore, since they are a big company they don't give a fuck about the pschological problems and money that im throwing down the drain due to this issue. My building is as close to low-income housing as you can get without it explicitly being low income housing.

Quebec rental law also does not mandate the landlord to inform you of infestations in the building. We moved in without knowing the whole building had been dealing with on and off infestations for over 5 years. Futhermore there was (and still is) an active infestation in the apartment below us.

Pest control companies only use sprays and borax...... WHICH SUCKS when I can garrentee they are hiding in the walls.

Pest control company comes for the first extermination after I literally found a live bed bug on the bed while i was trying to fall asleep. They say they didn't find anything....low and behold they are back in 1.5 months later when I literally found a nest :(.

This same company says they inspected the apartments adjacent to mine and they were cleared. This is despite the fact that my neighbour told me he's given up on the issue and that he still has them. Again this is the same company who said I didn't have any when they inspected during the first extermination.

Called the vet about getting advantage or revolution for my cat. They said they dont perscribe drugs for cats due to bed bugs????

Home depot/Canadian tire/Rona dont sell plastic totes with gaskets so I have to seal my belongings in the totes with duck tape.

The only plastic covers (for the box spring) I could fine are breathable and have about 18 holes in them which i had to cover individually with duck tape....

Literally my quality of life has been ruined due to this. All of my and my boyfriend's clothes are either in plastic bags or large plastic totes (for the stuff I need daily). All out belongings are in plastic totes. We got rid of our couch because it was impossible to dismantle and we kept finding the bugs on it. Now all we have to sit on is hard chairs. My back has been sore for weeks. My boyfriend is covered in bites all the time.

About 3 weeks ago we had an extermination. We were away while it happened. When we came back a week later we kept finding live bed bugs everyday. A week ago we had another extermination... THE SUCKERS ARE STILL ALIVE, bitting us daily in our sleep. We found 2 in the bath tub this morning, and i have no idea how they got in there but I saw a small crack on the ceiling.

Their are gaps everywhere along the baseboards in the apartment. The handy work is shotty at best. Some of the gaps between the flooring and the wall are big enough for me to stick my pinky finger through. I can't have anyone over to the house...

Now we have to negotiate with our landlord to terminate the lease this summer early. I do not, in good conscious , feel comfortable lease transferring this hell hole to some unwitting person. My mom and my boyfriends Mom think we should just stop paying the rent. However if we do this we could be sued for damages in the Quebec rental board. When and if we can move we are getting rid of all our furniture. I bought my bed from sears outlet 5 years ago for 400$... It is one of the most expensive things I own and now I have to throw it out because its covered in eggs and the exterminators think they are living in the mattress. Im starting a master's and have funding but barley enough to get by day to day. My boyfriend works at a call center and makes 15$/hr. We have almost no savings and probably are only gonna be able to afford the cheapest ikea mattress when we move out.

Im so paranoid about moving my belongings with me. I intent to wash all dishes and kitchen stuff it very hot soppy water. But im worried about my books and other belongings in the bins. Also about the bins themselves. Not sure if the bins might have eggs on the outside of them as they are so damn hard to see.

Any advice is helpful. This isn't my first rodeo on this sub but it feels good to get all of these frustrations out.

Toronto is the worst city in Canada for bed bugs – blogto.com

Today in gross and hopelessly obvious news, Toronto has been found to boast a biggerbed bug problemthan any other city in Canada.

The country's largest pest control company, Orkin, just released its second annual list of the "top bed bug cities" based on the number of treatments at all residential and commercial properties between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018.

It makes sense that Toronto would have the highest number of bed bug situations needing professional attention, given that it's Canada's biggest city, but size doesn't necessarily coincide withrates of infestation.

Winnipeg, for example, had the second-biggest bed bug problem of 2018, according to Orkin's data, followed by St. John's, Newfoundland and then Vancouver.

Montreal and Calgary, however, don't appear on the top 10 list at all despite being Canada's second and fourth largest cities by population.

This is only the second edition of Orkin'sannual bed bug list, but the company warns that thishard-to-kill pest has become increasingly common in North Americaoverthe past 20 years.

"Bed bugs are extremely efficient hitch hikers," reads Orkin's blog. "They can move easily across a room and climb onto luggage or anything left on a bed in just one night...They can also be found on airplane and train seats, buses or in rental cars."

Uh, thanks for the nightmares.

Here's the full list of Canada's top 10 bedbug cities if you're so inclined:

The Law About Bed Bugs in Canada | Rox Bugs

Are thinking of relocating to Canada? Moving your family to a different city can be overwhelming especially when you know little about the town. If you are moving to a new location and you are worried about who will foot the bills in case of bug infestations, then read on.

If you move to your dream house, apartment or condo only to find out you just moved into a breeding home of pesky bugs, it is a nightmare. To make the matter worse often times, you are responsible for the cost of extermination. Before you own a home in any of the regions in Canada, it is necessary to read and understand the law governing the city; every homeowner or tenant should understand bed bugs and the law governing the area to avoid unnecessary disputes between landlords and tenants.

It is the sole responsibility of the landlord to provide a healthy and habitable environment for the tenant. If the tenants notice bug infestation, they are advised to go to the local health authority and report the situation. The health inspectors will evaluate the case, and if the landlord is found wanting, he will be asked to take of it.

Similar to Alberta, the landlord must provide healthy and bug-free rental unit for the tenants. The landlord is responsible for exterminating bed bug infestations. If you are living in Vancouver or planning to move there, kindly visit the Tenants Rights Action Coalition for further information; Vancouver has a high rate of bed bug invasion.

The landlords are obligated to exterminate cockroaches, as well as other pesky pests and rodents while they have tenants, to maintain a healthy and clean environment afterward under the provinces public health act.

Tenants and landlords handle the situation themselves, but if they cannot find common ground to settle the bed bug case, the residential tenancy branch can intervene and help the landlord and tenant resolve the dispute.

If you are leaving in New Brunswick, there is no specific bed bug legislation. Nevertheless, the rental and consumer affairs can help you resolve any cases of bed bug-related disputes between tenants and landlords. The law favors the tenants, only if they have proofs that the fault was as a result of the landlords negligence.

There is no laid down legislation for resolving bed bug disputes between the tenant and the landlord in Nova Scotia. However, if the landlord can prove that the tenant is responsible for the bugs infestation, then they will be responsible for extermination. Furthermore, if the tenant is found innocent, the landlord assumes the responsibility of fixing the bed bug problems.

Again, like the maritime provinces, there is no laid down rule concerning bed bug infestation. The landlord is mandated to provide a bug-free environment for any new tenant, and the tenant has to ensure the environment is clean and free from clutter to eliminate the risk of inviting pests in the house.

If you are moving to this region as a tenant, YOU are responsible for the cost exterminating bed bugs, and other pests from your home, except if you have evidence that you did not bring them while moving. It is a little tricky nevertheless, it is the duty of the landlord to stop the infestation from spreading to another part of the house.

Like some of the provinces in Canada, no specific rule covers bed bug infestation, but each will be handled by an arbitrator before any action can be taken. The case can be in favor of the landlord or the tenant so long each party can prove they are not guilty of the pest invasion.

For more information, landlords and tenants can consult individual local or provincial landlord-tenant agencies for guidance.

Bed Bugs: Treatment & Tips For Getting Rid Of Them …

Bed bugs are usually brought into the house from the outside, on clothing, baggage, second-hand furniture or in laundry done in an infested home. Social stigma is attached to them more than to any other insect. This is unfair since the most conscientious homemaker may bring them in on his or her clothing after brushing up against someone while shopping or spending an afternoon at the movies.

No Matter How Clean You Keep Your Home--Bed Bugs Can Thrive As Long As They Have A Host To Feed On: You

Once in the house, they will hide all day in the most out-of-the-way place it can find. Its hiding place may be a good distance away from the bedin wall spaces, floor cracks, behind partitions, in furniture cracksor it may burrow into the mattress tufts or crawl in among the crevices in the bed frame. Wherever it hides, it has an uncanny instinct for finding its way easily to the bed when the lights are out. They will climb up from the floor, climb walls and drop from ceilings with ease to get at their victims. They are attracted to your body warmth and the carbon dioxide you exhalesure signs that theres a live one waiting to be feasted on.

Because of the increased amount of traveling we do today compared to a few decades ago, bed bugs can be a real problem in hotels, buses, airplanes and other areas where groups of people gather together. Buildings that house several people or families at once can also cause infestation problems (apartment buildings, condos, senior citizen homes, etc.) since they can travel between walls with ease.

Picture Of Bedbug Feeding On A Human Source: Wikipedia.org

Before eating, the bedbug (Cimex lectulariusalso known as a chinch, a red-coat or a mahogany flat) is a small one-quarter to three-eighths of an inch, wingless, paper-thin insect, oval in shape and dark brown in color. After becoming engorged, the body thickens and is elongated. The ingested blood changes its color to a dull red. The mouth is constructed in the shape of a beak, which it plunges into the body of its victim, sucking the blood up through it. At the same time a fluid is being secreted to facilitate the eating process. This fluid is extremely irritating to the skin of most human beings and causes swelling, irritation and itching.

Tip:

When sleeping in an unfamiliar bed (at a hotel for example), pull back the bed sheets and look at the bare mattressif you see excrement (it will look like rust spots on the mattress), leave the room immediately and find another hotel to stay at.

You can call in a professional exterminator to fumigate the home and furniture inside, this is preferable since professional exterminators are familiar with the hiding habits of these critters and the chemicals they use are usually very effective. However, if fumigation is out of your budget or youd like to try a more natural remedy to kill them, food grade Diatomaceous Earth is a safe and harsh-chemical free method.

Diatomaceous Earth is a natural, effective means of pest control (Ive previously recommended it for fleas and ant control). You can find it in garden centers (make sure to buy the food grade stuff). Its a soft, chalk-like sedimentary rock that is crumbled into a fine white to off-white powder.

Diatomaceous Earth is easily picked up by the hairy bodies of most insects, whereupon it scratches through their protective wax layers and they also absorb some of this material. The result being that the insects lose water rapidly, dry up and die. Further protection is provided by the powders property of repelling many insects. In houses it can be used effectively to prevent the entry of certain insects such as earwigs, ants, and cockroaches, and to control these and others that are present in cupboards containing food, carpets, basements, attics, window ledges, pet areas (for fleas), etc. In all of these examples it is important to place a small amount of the powder in corners, cracks, crevices and other areas where insects might hide.

(Source: Ecological Agriculture Projects, McGill University).

Steps To Take:

It will take a few weeks before they all will be killed (you have to ensure that the entire life cycle has been haltedno new eggs waiting to hatch, etc.). Keep applying the Diatomaceous Earth and petroleum jelly until all signs of the infestation are gone.

Try applying one of the following for relief:

If there is a danger of infection, use iodine as a topical antiseptic to control it.
