Victoria Pest Control is here to help you become bed bug free! Whether its a single family home, apartment, housing society, or even a car (they get infested too!), we have a solution to solve your bed bug problem!!!

During the day bed bugs will live in cracks and crevices, preferring wood and paper surfaces. These areas may have a stink bug smell due to the residue and excrement of the bed bugs. At night the bed bug will leave these spaces and seek out hosts, including people and pets. The bed bug will attach itself to the host, which generally goes unnoticed, and feed on blood for 3 to 10 minutes. For people, the attachment site on the skin may become inflamed and itchy. Small blood spots may be noticeable on the bed sheets. There will also be small brown fecal spots on walls and surfaces where bed bugs travel. The female bed bug will lay up to 5 eggs per day in cracks and on rough surfaces. An egg will hatch and mature into an adult bed bug in 21 days, and then live for a further 6 to 12 months.

Bed bugs are difficult to prevent, even in the most sanitary of homes. They can be introduced into a home via used furniture or belongings from an infected structure. Bed bugs can also infest transport vehicles, boats, trains, planes, etc. Certified bed bug mattress and box spring enclosures will prevent bed bugs from living in the mattresses and will protect these expensive items from infestation.

Home > Home Improvement > Testing and/or Removal Services > Get Rid Of Bed Bugs

Bed bug infestations have been on the rise in the United States for the last couple of decades. Once associated with poor hygiene and poverty, the bugs' resurgence is, according to research, caused by international travel, immigration, changes in pest control practices, and insecticide resistance. Bed bugs live in places where there are ample human and animal hosts such as homes, apartments, hotels, and dormitories. They're difficult to eradicate and exterminator fees often run into the thousands of dollars.

While they don't carry disease, bed bugs present an existential nightmare for most. The surest way to identify an infestation is to find a live bed bug. Adult bugs can be spotted with the unaided eye; they're oval, flat, rusty-colored, and about 5 mm long. After feeding they're slightly more elongated (see a pre and post-feeding bed bug picture here).

Short of finding a live bed bug (which is tough to do because they feed at around 4 a.m. and hide during the day), household members or visitors might notice small, pink, itchy skin welts that resemble mosquito bites. Many bite victims don't react at all, although extreme reactions can lead to asthma, hives, and in rare cases, anaphylaxis. Other ways to identify bed bugs are their excrement (tiny dark spots), shed beg bug skin, and blood smears from crushed bugs.

If you're like most people, even the slightest evidence of bed bugs is cause to call an exterminator. Here's what to expect once the local bug guy or gal arrives:

ow, what the pco's don't share up front before we drown in debt.

Beth,

I'm sad if you had a bad experience with a PMP because bad PMP give all of them a bad name.

However, I've never heard a PMP say that talc is an effective way to kill bed bugs. Keep in mind that it's entirely possible that a PMP told bitebedbugsback that, but just because one PMP said it doesn't make it true.

Just as in any other profession, there are good and bad PMPs out there, and there are multiple ways for one to be bad. A bad PMP might claim to find an infestation where none exists or treat ineffectively, but a bad one might also use a susbtance like talc that isn't effective at killing bugs or tell a client to use something that won't work.

I certainly don't think there's a PMP conspiracy out there in which there's really a cheap solution to bed bugs that they aren't telling us about.

I'm also not especially confident that talc would do anything to kill the bugs. It might make it harder for them to move and slow them down, but I don't think it kills them. If there were a cheap, over the counter way to kill bed bugs, I'd be the first one to sings its praises from the rooftops. So far, it doesn't exist.

As for the reaction you had to DE, I've never heard of DE having that effect on someone--even someone with chemical sensitivity. (Remember, DE is basically the exoskeletons of a kind of plankton, and its sharp edges mechanically erode bed bugs' exoskeletons.) There are some DE preparations that are DE combined with a pyrethrin, and if you're chemically sensitive, it would make sense that a combo product like that might trigger the chemical sensitivity.

If there isn't a chemical in it and you're having that response, I would be very wary about using any DE as I can't imagine that one food grade DE is very different from another food grade DE, and you may well have that same, if statistically highly uncommon, reaction to another preparation.

Identifying Bed Bugs – Orkin Canada

Ants and mice are moving inside and wildlife may be looking for potential harbourage areas. Spiders are constructing egg sacs and mosquito activity is increasing. House fly activity can be expected. Commercial accounts will need to be aware of increased small fly activity. Nuisance wildlife, such as squirrels and chipmunks, will be much more noticeable.

Home Bed Bugs Identifying Bed Bugs

Since bed bugs are nocturnal and so small, detecting them can be very difficult. Signs & symptoms of a bed bug infestation can be found in bedding and on mattresses. People will sometimes roll onto bedbugs while sleeping, resulting in blood stains on the sheets. Live bed bugs will leave dark brown or black spots of dried excrement on infested surfaces after feeding and also exude a very subtle sweet, musty odour.

Bedbugs are small, flat and have oval-shaped bodies. They have six legs and two antennae. Bed bugs cannot fly and have short, golden coloured body hair that can make their bodies appear to be striped.

Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown in colour and approximately 5-6mm in length. After feeding, bed bugs can swell to upwards of 10mm and get fatter and darker in colour.

Bed bug nymphs are approximately 1-4mm in length (the size of the head of a pin) and are white or a golden colour until they feed. This light coloration acts as a camouflage and helps them hide in mattresses and carpets.

The Orkin Canada QA lab is well equipped with the latest in diagnostic and identification technology.

Equipment used for analytical entomology in the QA lab includes a compound microscope with digital camera. It is capable of magnifying objects up to 1000x times and capturing images at a high resolution to assist our technicians with high defined analysis (examination) of extremely small specimens.
