NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) Dozens of students went home early today after word spread about a possible bed bug infestation at their Luzerne County High School. Parents say they will not send their kids back to school until they are assured the bed bugs are gone. The I-Team's Andy Mehalshick joins us live from the Nanticoke High School with the story.

"I'm coming to get her because I don't want them to come home!" Katrina Chopik told the I-Team

And that's what we heard from dozens of parents as they picked up their children at Greater Nanticoke Area High School. Word spread quickly about the discovery of a bed bug in a classroom on Tuesday afternoon.

"If there is one there are also more. I want to know where they come from." noted Chopik

Jeff Engle left school and isn't sure when he will return..

"My mom was scared and I'm going home early along with other kids who went home early." said Jeff Engle a Nanticoke High School Student.

"The situation is under control" said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ronald Grevera. He says the problem has been taken care of..

"We did find one bug..found by a teacher. Those students were moved as a precaution to another classroom..last night that class was sprayed."

Grevera says the situation is being blown way out of proportion..in large part by rumors spread on social media.. "We want to reassure parents the area was treated and sprayed."

Despite that reassurance some folks say they are not so sure their kids will come back to school anytime soon..

"They told the kids they have to come back tomorrow but if there are bed bugs these kids can't go back up here. They are going to bring the bugs home to their house." said Shelia Pinkney a grandparent.

Dr. Grevera said every room has been inspected and that no bed bugs were found. He also says that any student who went home early today without permission will have an unexcused absence and could be punished.
