NDSU Entomologist: Bed bugs can be a problem anywhere – Valley News Live

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - Over the weekend, a video of a man showing bed bugs in his hotel room at 7 Clans Casino was seen by thousands of people. The casino said they're addressing this issue, but the situation has many people asking how common are bed bugs. Pretty common according to one insect expert.

"It's not related to wealth or how clean you are or how fancy the hotel room is, it could be anywhere," NDSU Entomologist Janet Knodel said.

Knodel said once people understand they can be anywhere, they'll be more mindful of the real culprit behind bed bugs which is traveling.

"It's primarily due to our travel. Travel is much more available to everybody and there's a lot more international travel as well," Knodel said.

Since people aren't going to stop traveling, getting educated about bed bugs is important according to Knodel.

"That's the first step, know what a bed bug looks like and then get it confirmed," Knodel said. "Then, we usually recommend you see a professional pest control for bed bug control."

Knodel said pest control may have to come out to your home several times because bed bugs have developed a resistance to insecticides. Pest control, along with washing and drying your clothes and bedding on the hottest temperature, should do the trick to kill bed bugs.
