Inside ‘horror’ council flat mum and baby forced to live in with ‘silverfish and bed bugs’ – Mirror Online

A young mum has spoken of her horror at being forced to live in a flat that is damp, moldy, has bed bugs and silverfish.

Em Sandford and her 10-week-old baby moved into the temporary accommodation in September and says it's been "treated" twice in the last two weeks but the problems keep coming back.

The 21-year-old, who also lives in the property with her boyfriend, Dylan Benson, 20, said mold is growing on walls next to the bed, on the floor and over the bathroom walls at the block of two-storey flats in Rubery, Birmingham.

The mould has even started growing on a skateboard, pram and suitcase.

Miss Sandford told BirminghamLive : "It's infested with silverfish, there's been bed bugs which have been biting my son and there's also been a massive mold and damp problem," Miss Sandford told BirminghamLive.

"It's been treated twice in the last two weeks, but has come back. I feel totally disgusted. I've literally just been dumped here and they've left me to it.

"We've tried everything with the mold. We've treated it with bleach and the council came out to treat it and both times it's grown back within a few days."

She added: "I would ideally like to be moved. A girl I was living with in a B&B was moved after two-days of complaining about bed bugs after being in contact with a local MP.

"She now has a temporary self-contained one bedroom flat for her and her daughter. I'd like similar if possible. I'm in contact with two MPs currently and am waiting for the council to even acknowledge their requests."

She was previously diagnosed with anxiety, PTSD and is also clinically depressed.

"I really at my wit's end as to what I can do. I've been thrown from pillar to post with everyone I've tried to speak to. The council are ignoring my emails. I don't know what to do at this point," she added.

The mum has previously lived in temporary council living at a hotel in Bearwood, a mother and baby unit in Small Heath and a B&B in Erdington over the last three-years.

Mirror Online has approached Birmingham City Council for comment.
