The Worst Bed Bug Hotel In NYC This Year Is In LIC: Report – Patch.com

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS As New York City reopens to tourists this summer, travelers might want to steer clear of a Long Island City hotel that poses the "highest" risk of bed bugs in the city this year, according to a recent study.

The report, published earlier this month by Pest Strategies, identified the top 10 hotels that are most likely to be bed bug "hot spots" in New York City this year, based on reviews from several platforms. In determining which hotels have the highest risk of bed bugs this year, Pest Strategies took into account the hotel's all-time bed bug complaint count, the frequency of complaints during the past two years, and the most recent credible review.

At the top of the list this year is the Queens County Inn and Suites Long Island City, located at 40-34 Crescent Street, which received an average of three bed bug complaints per year since 2010 much higher than the average NYC hotel, which gets just one complaint per year, according to Pest Strategies.

The hotel placed at the top of Pest Strategies' list this year because of its high all-time bed bug count and the number of reviews it's received in the past several years, which shows a "track record of systemic infestation" according to the report.

Out of the 36 complaints that the Long Island City hotel has received since 2004 from Tripadvisor, Bed Bug Reports, and Bedbug Registry, seven were reported in the roughly two-year stretch between January 2018 and February 2020 most recently including a credible bed bug complaint in January of last year.

However, Pest Strategies said that the Queens Country Inn and Suites has made "significant improvements" since 2012 and 2015, when the hotel received six complaints per year.

When it comes to Pest Strategies' list of NYC hotels that have the worst bed bug reputations of all time (or since 2004), the Queens Country Inn and Suites comes in third place, behind two hotels in Manhattan.

And, unfortunately, the Long Island City hotel isn't the only northwest-based hotel on Pest Strategies' lists.

The La Quinta Inn by Wyndham Queens, a hotel on Queens Boulevard that bills itself as an airport hotel because of its proximity to La Guardia Airport, ranked number 8 on this year's list of top 10 hotels with the highest risk of bed bugs.

But in general Pest Strategies found that Manhattan hotels reign supreme when it comes to the risk of bed bugs.

The site reported that about 80 percent of the hotels with one or more bed bug reviews after 2016 are in Manhattan, and 57.8 percent are located within a quarter-mile of Times Square.
