This Pa. city is the second-most infested with bed bugs in the U.S.: Orkin – PennLive

Out of all the rankings weve wrote about so far, this may very well be one of the least flattering.

A city in Pennsylvania has just been deemed by Orkin the second-most infested with bed bugs in the entire U.S. of A.

Philly Voice reports that Orkinin releasing its annual Top 50 Bed Bug Cities List for 2022took a look to see which locations around the country requested the most bed bug treatments between December 2020 and November 2021.

Number two on said list is Philadelphia.

The listwhich counted both commercial and residential buildings who had requested treatmentsactually makes a rather troubling note, pointing out that Philly jumped up not one, not two, but 12 spots from its original 2021 ranking of 14. Thats actually the highest jump out of any other cities included on the list, although none other than Harrisburg was ranked as a newcomer at number 42.

Below Philly at number three was New York (who moved up nine spots from 2021 itself), and above Chicago, a place thats held its number one listing for two years in a row.

Although a previous study reported on by PennLive named cockroaches as the most reviled pest in all of Pennsylvania, bed bugs are certainly no joke, either: The Orkin study details how these tiny creatures find strength in numbers, reproducing rapidly and sticking to a hematophagous diet, i.e., feeding solely off human blood.

Bed bugs are a concern for everyone because they are master hitchhikers, traveling home with people when they likely dont realize it, explains Orkin entomologist, Ben Hottel. Their nature of hiding in difficult-to-find cracks and crevices can make them hard to control, which is why involving a trained professional at the sight of an introduction is recommended.
