Bed bugs found at Shreveport elementary school – KTAL

Shreveport, LA - Bed bugs lurk in cracks and crevices. They're about the size of an apple seed and are flat and round. On April 4th the nurse at J.S. Clark Elementary School found active bed bugs on a student.

The Director of Elementary Schools, Brenda McDonald says in her 30 years with Caddo Parish Public Schools this is the first incident of bed bugs that she's been made aware of at a school.

All parents of students received a letter notifying them of the situation.

"We took action immediately. Just because as the letter from the nurse says it's a nuisance, but it's one of those things if you do deal with it quickly, it's taken care of."

Maintenance was called, the carpet was cleaned in the student's classroom and the area where the student had been was sanitized.

According to the letter sent to parents it is unlikely for bed bugs to infest a school, but the school system was prepared to implement a pest management plan just in case.

"What we do at the school is just check regularly and if there's a problem we would have a a pest management program."

To ease parents concerns bed bugs usually don't pose any serious medical risk, but the parasite does leave itchy bites.

If parents have any questions they are encouraged to call 603-7218.
