Bed bugs shut down Colorado State University'sMorgan Library Cube.

The Cube a study section of the library that's open 24 hoursclosed Friday evening following a report of a possible bed bug sighting. Exterminators found the bed bugs in one corner of the building, spokeswoman Dell Rae Ciaravola wrote in an email.

So far bed bugs have not been reported in the main library or other parts of the university, Ciaravola wrote.

The small, reddish-brown bugs bite exposed skin and feed on blood, according to the Colorado Center for Integrated Pest Management, part of CSUs College of Agricultural Sciences.

They feed on both animals and humans but prefer human blood, according to the center. Lucky us.

Bed bugs often hide in crevices and cracks near or on furniture, according to the center. They feed for about 10 minutes at a time before they crawl back into the crevice whence they came.

They dont typically spread diseases, but they do cause itchy rashes and swelling, and some folks can be allergic.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bed bug infestations usually occur near areas where people sleep, including apartments, shelters, hotels, cruise ships, buses, trains and dorm rooms. Theyve been known to travel more than 100 feet in a night, according to the CDC, but they tend to live within eight feet of where humans sleep.

The university is taking multiple steps to address the problem, Ciaravola wrote, but anticipates the Cube opening later this week. In addition to exterminator treatment, staff will heat the furniture and areas of the building corners included "with steam to produce hot temperatures that are known to kill the bugs."

The building's furniture will be heated and steam cleaned "at least twice" this week, she added, and officials will "check the building several times to ensure that strategies mitigate the issue before reopening."

Ciaravola wrote bed bugs can spread easily and often go unnoticed.

Their presence does not indicate a lack of cleanliness, shewrote.
