Though your first instinct after traveling may be to unpack and put your belongings away, a University of Maryland entomologist suggests tossing your clothes in the dryer to prevent bed bugs from making your bed their new home.

A new international study found the bed bugs who bite humans evolved from bugs who fed on bats 250,000 years ago.

"Bed bugs are becoming resistant to some of our most potent insecticides," Michael Raupp, a professor at University of Maryland, said.

Raupp added the spread of bed bugs is also due to globalization, used furniture sales and international travel.

"People are moving around more and they're coming in contact with bed bugs in different places," Raupp said.

If you want to make sure you're not bringing any bugs home, the first thing you should do after a trip is place your clothes in the dryer on medium heat for about 30 minutes.

"It's going to kill every living stage of a bed bug," Raupp said.

No bed bug infestation at Towson district courthouse, officials say after inspection

After a weekend inspection, officials say there is no bed bug infestation at the District Court of Maryland's Towson courthouse.

The courthouse closed early Friday after a single bed bug was found in a file room. Over the weekend, exterminators and a team of four dogs inspected the building and its annex and found no other bed bugs, said Angelita Plemmer Williams, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Judiciary.

The file room where the insect was found was treated, and the courthouse was open as usual Monday, Plemmer Williams said.

About 120 judiciary employees work at the Towson courthouse, she said.

The DMV area is struggling with an ever-growing bed bug problem. Environmental Heat Solutions offers a solid solution.

Bed bugs are on the rise in Washington, D.C., and the surrounding states of Virginia and Maryland. As of 2012, D.C. ranked number six on a list of the most infested cities in the country. While still not as bad as New York City, D.C.s problem seems to be growing.

Getting rid of bed bugs has become increasingly difficult for a variety of reasons, according to a representative from Environmental Heat Solutions. Over-the-counter solutions to bed bugs may once have been effective, but studies show they do not work today. This is likely a result of bed bugs high ability to develop resistance to pesticides. Additionally, the pest is notoriously difficult to eradicate as a result of its propensity to hide in hard to reach places. Bed bugs can also remain dormant without feeding for a very long time; some claim an infested mattress can be dangerous for well over a year.

Bed bugs have also become highly resistant to chemicals used by professional exterminators. This is why Environmental Heat Solutions offers a different approach to eliminating an infestation: bed bug heat treatment. By evenly raising the temperature in someones home to 120 degrees, our heat treatments kill all adult and juvenile bed bugs, as well as their eggs, said a representative from Environmental Heat Solutions.

Our treatments are safer and more effective than pesticide treatments, said the spokesperson. Heat treatment for bed bugs only takes a few hours and completely eliminates any infestation. It is also completely safe for humans, as it uses no chemicals.

A bed bug infestation is easiest to eliminate if its caught early. We also offer canine detection services to determine if an infestation is present, said the spokesperson.

Bed bugs are a problem, but they dont have to be a disaster, the spokesperson said. At Environmental Heat Solutions, we prioritize getting people back to their normal lives as quickly as possible, with no more worrying about bed bugs.

Read 1 Bed Bug Report for Ramada BWI Airport-Arundel Mills …

I spent the night at the Ramada (BWI Airport Arundel Mills) and I found 4 Bedbugs in the room the next morning. I brought the bed bugs down to the front desk in a zip-lock bag to show the staff. They accompanied me to the room where we found a 5th bed bug. Each of the 5 bed bugs were at a different stage in their growth, one was very tiny, one was fully matured etc. The front desk refused to acknowledge that I had found the bugs in my room, despite the fact that the last one had been found by the cleaning staff and myself. The front desk staff immediately checked me out of my room without my consent and began to have the maintenance/cleaning staff strip the beds and treat the room for bed bugs. At the same time however, they denied the existence of the bugs, and charged me $143.66 for the room, even though I had been given the room the night before at a rate of $93.66. The extra charges were not explained to me or authorized my me. The front desk manager told me to leave the hotel and threatened to have me escorted off the premises.

Maryland Bed Bugs | MD Bedbug Extermination

Bed bugs can be a persons worst nightmare - literally. They bite, leaving behind red, blotchy marks that itch like crazy. You may have been bitten in the middle of the night and not even realized who the culprit was. It is usually the bite marks that alert people to Maryland bed bugs, but it is much more than just a bite that needs to be examined.

You may never actually see bed bugs in Maryland, but that does not mean that they are not there. They can hide in the fibers of your mattress and box spring. They come out at night to feed. You can see the doctor about your bite, but they are not going to be able to tell you with 100% certainty that it is a bed bug.

You have to find more evidence. You can rip off all of your sheets and still not find any. Go ahead and toss the sheets in a hot dryer for about 20 or 30 minutes. That will at least kill any that may be in your sheets - for now. If you see the bug, it is going to be a small black circular critter that is flat and very small. You may also see the fecal marks on the side of your mattress or box spring. These will be dark red or black marks that is actually partially digested blood that has dried or been discarded.

At that point, it is official - you have bed bugs in your bed. There are a few home remedies, but they do not really work because it is a temporary solution. Bed bugs can live for weeks without feeding so you need something more powerful.

Bed bugs in Maryland hotels probably found their way into your home through luggage or a friend and now you have got to get rid of them. You are going to need to call an exterminator to get them out of your house because the chemicals need to be strong to actually kill them. Some strains of bed bugs have actually become tolerant of household chemicals, so a Maryland bed bug extermination company uses much harsher products that are better than what you would get over the counter.

A bed bug can be a very bad thing, so when you want to make sure they are truly dead and not just napping for a few days, call a bed bug exterminator and have them out of your home so you can sleep peacefully.

Our exterminators can help you with:
