How to See Bed Bugs | eHow

Bedbugs can prove difficult to locate, because they are so tiny less than a quarter of an inch and can hide almost anywhere. Unlike fleas, bedbugs do not live on their host. Instead, the blood-sucking insect parasites which prefer to feed on human blood crawl away and hide near areas where people sleep. Bedbugs are not known to transmit diseases, but their bites leave itchy red bumps that are often mistaken for flea or mosquito bites. Bedbugs are mainly active at night, but in areas of heavy infestation they can be spotted during the day.

Inspect cracks in the headboard and frame of the bed. At the start of an infestation, this is often the first place that bedbugs colonize. Use a magnifying glass and a flashlight to make spotting the tiny bugs easier.

Remove the sheets from mattresses and inspect the seams. Pull back the roll of material around the edge of the mattress. Bedbugs often hide in the cracks between the body of the mattress and the rolls around the edges. Look for areas that are stained a dark rust-red color from bedbug feces.

Move the mattress and inspect the areas around the seams in the box spring under the mattress. Pay special attention to the areas between the headboard and the box spring.

Peel back edges of carpeting near the bed. In heavier infestations, bedbugs can hide underneath.

Take pictures off the walls and inspect the backing. Bedbugs can crawl up walls and sometimes hide behind frames.

Inspect any other areas where there are cracks and crevices close to the bed. Bedbugs generally stay near the area where their host sleeps, but they can travel up to 20 feet to feed if there is no adequate shelter nearby.

Bed Bug

Heat Treatment

"Now servicing a 3 hour radius of omaha"

The rapid resurgence of the bed bug, Cimex lectularius L., is perhaps the hottest pest management topic of the day. Over the past few years they have caught the nation completely off guard. There has been a 500 percent increase in U.S. bed bug incidents in the last few years, and infestations have risen tenfold since 1996 in parts of London.*

Female bed bugs may lay from 200 to 500 eggs, in batches of 10 to 50. The eggs are covered with a glue and hatch in about 10 days. There are five progressively larger nymphal stages, each require a single blood meal before molting to the next stage. The entire life cycle from egg to adult requires anywhere from 5 weeks to 4 months, depending on temperature. Bed bugs can go without feeding for 80 to 140 days. Adults have survived without food for as long as 550 days. A bed bug can take six times its weight in blood and feeding can take 3 to 10 minutes. Adults live about 10 months and there can be up to 3 to 4 generations of bed bugs per year.** Temperatures of about 120F are lethal to most insects provided they cannot escape to a cooler location.

Bed Bugs | Informational Guide to Bed Bugs | Purdue …

There are many very good web sites that all provide similar information about the basics of bed bugs. A few of these are linked throughout this site. This technical education web site differs in that it is designed to provide tools for those charged with educating others about bed bugs.

It includes technical resources such as power point presentations, printable brochures/handouts that can be custom designed for specific audiences, color photographs, specific question/answer write-ups, a 20 minute general video introduction to the bed bug problem as well as a series of small video (youtube type) clips that address specific techniques or questions about bed bug management. It also features an interactive video game that teaches about bed bug inspection, and is of particular interest to younger audiences. Finally, this site advertises a bed bug exhibit that can be taken to large conferences or other educational venues to provide general awareness information about bed bugs.

Purdue University Extension is pleased to provide these materials at no cost to you in an effort to increase the general awareness of the bed bug problem and to assist in the education of our citizens.

Also linked to this site are other resources, checklists, web sites and even a search program for bed bug products and services that have been developed elsewhere. Together, these are all provided as a buffet for educators teaching bed bug awareness and management to nearly any clientele group.

Bed bugs in Lincoln, Nebraska Got bed bugs? Bedbugger.com

KETV.com in Omaha reports on Angie Rempe, whos been living with bed bugs for eight months.

By the time we found out what they were, they had totally coated the seams of the mattresses, said Rempe.

She now finds bed bugs in the baseboards, closets and in cracks in the ceiling of her apartment.

The article mentions the fact that the landlord and tenant are at odds as to who is responsible for paying to get rid of the bed bugs.

Although the landlord and tenant in this case are working together, its a reminder that we need clearer laws in many places. Landlords may not want to foot the cost of bed bug treatment, but leaving it up to tenants (as is the case some places) means the problem may spread to others, and surely bring the propertys value down while it persists.

Rempe and her exterminator got advice from Barb Ogg of the University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension Office:

Ogg said licensed exterminators must use insecticide every few weeks until inspections no longer reveal evidence of living bugs.

Tiny brown spots in patches on the wall indicate bed bug droppings, a tell-tale sign of a possible infestation. You cant just come in and spray the baseboards and leave, Ogg said.Ogg instructed property managers of Rempes apartment to have exterminators drill holes in the ceiling to insert the pesticide, and then caulk the holes and plug up any cracks and crevices where the bugs might live.Rempe said exterminators have completed two treatments in recent weeks and she isnt seeing as much bug activity as she had in the past. She said exterminators also treated the vacant apartments that share walls with her unit.

One lesson here is that if you live somewhere where bed bugs are less common at this time, contacting local authorities (like health or housing inspectors) and university experts (accessible via extension offices at universities) can help. Even if they have not seen bed bugs before, they should be able to network with colleagues elsewhere who have.

Bed Bugs in North Platte Close Down Local Library, My Cleaning Products Suggests a Spray to Kill Bed Bugs Anywhere

Lincoln, NE (PRWEB) May 28, 2014

Bed bugs were discovered in a library in North Platte in Nebraska. A report from nptelegraph.com related the details of it on its post dated May 24, 2014. Meanwhile, to help the public kill bed bugs anywhere fast and safe, My Cleaning Products recommended a bed bug spray.

The report shared that the infestation of the critters resulted to the shutting down of the facility on Thursday. And so the bed bug treatment could be implemented and the further spread of the pest could be prevented, it added that it will remain shut until Tuesday.

It was said in the post that the vampire-like bugs were found on Tuesday. They occupied two upholstered chairs near the front desk of the library, it relayed. As it detailed, they were particularly hiding in the cracks of the furniture.

Below is an exert from the post Bed Bugs Infest North Platte Library by My Cleaning Products.

In North Platte in Nebraska, bed bugs found their way to one local library. As a result, the facility was shut down."

"The critters were discovered on Tuesday. They were found in the two upholstered chairs near the front desk of the library hiding, particularly, in the cracks of them.

According to My Cleaning Products, because bed bugs reproduce and spread quickly, they are now very prevalent. Because of that, it stated that they could infest any place these days.

Given that, MCP asserted that one must be wary of bed bug signs. Moreover, it advised everybody to prepare a bed bug spray for an immediate bed bug treatment. That, it said, will help prevent a major infestation of them.

Nonetheless, the company only recommended the use of Bed Bug Bully. As it is both effective and safe, it stated that it is the right product for the bed bug elimination process.
