OKC Apartment Complex Charges Residents To Exterminate Bed Bugs
OKLAHOMA CITY -
An apartment with an ongoing problem with bed bugs is now charging residents to get rid of the pesky insects.
Several people who rent at Westview tell News 9 as soon as they clean up a roach, bed bug or flea from a neighboring apartment crawls in. Therefore, the problem can't be squashed or sprayed away.
"The roaches you can tell are here, but this apartment is not totally infested, but my kids they did get bit," said Westview resident Shayla Krujac.
It's become so commonplace people at Westview apartments are creating remedies to kill the critters.
"My daughters got bit a couple times, but I put a little baby powder in the couch and saran wrapped it, they just smothered and died. But they came back a little bit," said an unidentified resident.
Several residents, many of which didn't want to be identified, say the apartment charges them to exterminate.
"I have a $1,400 mattress that I had to replace a few months ago because it is so bad. The kids get eaten alive," another unidentified resident said.
Why don't they move? Economics and Immigration.
"A lot of people don't speak English, a lot of people aren't from this country in these neighborhoods," she said. "They are not going to come fix it. When it is this severe and it is every single household in the apartment complex, that would be a mass cleaning and cost a lot of money, they are not going to pay all that money especially for apartments in the hood."

New research shows bed bugs are not disease spreaders
The research of two Mississippi medical professionals Dr. Richard deShazo and Dr. Jerome Goddard brought the nation some welcome news in 2009: Bed bugs leave nasty bites that are hard to treat but no evidence exists to indicate they spread disease.
Tiny bed bugs will suck your blood but do they carry disease?
Their article appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association and landed them a spot on NBCs The Today Show.
Until the review by deShazo, chairman of the University of Mississippi Medical Center Department of Medicine, and Goddard, a Mississippi State University an entomology professor, little was known about the risks associated with bed bug bites.
Three months ago, deShazo and Goddard published a paper in the American Journal of Medicine on treating the blistering psychological effects of bed bug attacks.
In the 2009 article, their research determined bed bugs do not transmit dangerous diseases such as HIV or hepatitis. Even today, though, deShavo is not entirely sure the parasitic bed bugs are entirely free of pathogens.
We have to keep a close eye on this, he said.
One problem in assessing bed bug bites, according to deShazo, is that many bite victims have no reaction at all. Many others will get only a brief itch.
But people who develop allergies to them or are bit repetitively get these skins reactions that persist for weeks.
We use to miss them because it was such an unusual thing. But now we look for them when people come in with a rash.

Study of the Day: Over-the-Counter Bedbug Remedies Are Worthless
New research suggests that, to get rid of these disgusting urban pests, it's best to go straight to the professionals.

PROBLEM: Bug bombs or foggers have been sold for decades to consumers looking to eliminate household insects. Do they really work against bedbugs?
METHODOLOGY: Entomologists Susan C. Jones and Joshua L. Bryant tested three different fogger brands -- Hotshot Bedbug and Flea Fogger, Spectracide Bug Stop Indoor Fogger, and Eliminator Indoor Fogger -- from a nationwide retailer on five different bedbug populations.
RESULTS: The researchers found little, if any, adverse effects on the bedbugs after using the aerosolized total-release foggers. Because most bedbugs hid in protected sites, such as mattresses, crevices, and carpets, the mist from foggers tended to not reach them. If or when they did come into contact, many of them still survived because they had built a resistance to these common insecticides.
CONCLUSION: Retail bug bombs are useless against bedbugs. "If you use these products," says Jones in a statement, "you will waste your money and you will delay effective treatment of your infestation."
IMPLICATION: Call a professional the next time you're attacked by bedbugs.
SOURCE: The full study, "Ineffectiveness of Over-the-Counter Total-Release Foggers Against the Bed Bug (Heteroptera: Cimicidae), ," is published in the Journal of Economic Entomology.
