NORFOLK, VA. Some Lake Taylor High School parents are upset after saying bed bugs were found in the school.

Connie Wood told News 3 she's gotten multiple robocalls about this issue in the past few weeks.

"It should have been rectified a couple weeks ago- when it first started instead of waiting," Wood told News 3.

Wood said she has pulled her son from school Thursdayand Friday.

Carrie Lonecke also said she has removed her son from classes Thursday.

This after she found a dead bed bug in his book bag.

The school district acknowledged the issue Wednesday, releasing the below statement:

There have been several bed bug sightings at Lake Taylor High over the last two weeks. This is not considered an infestation; only one bed bug was sighted ineach incident/location. The dates of theseoccurrences are as follows:March 23, March 28,March 31,April 4 and today. As per the established NPSBed Bug Protocol, the principal communicated via robocallsto parentsand guardians. Another phone call was made at 3:00PM today and a letter will be sent hometomorrow detailing additional interventions that the school will employ. Late thisafternoon, we confirmed with our Facilities Department that the school will be treated by alicensedpest control specialistover the upcomingweekend. As Friday signifies the beginning of Spring Break, we hope that this problem will be remedied.

Parents say their issue is the district first told them about the bed bugs two weeks ago and are just treating the issue.

'You can`t just spray one time for a bed bug. It`s a little ridiculous. It`s getting monotonous and we just want something done about it," Wood described.

Parents say they're concerned about their kids health and a possible infestation at home.

'I now have him take his clothes and shoes and everything off before he walks in the house," Lonecke said.

Bed bug treatment displaces some residents – The Killeen Daily Herald

Some tenants at Bradley Arms Apartments in downtown Killeen are complaining that the apartment managements effort to rid the complex of bed bugs is causing hardships on families who live there.

We have to sit out here for 12 hours, said Emma Jones, 39, who lives in the apartment complex on North Eighth Street with her three children, ages 12, 13 and 19.

Jones said the management company Isbell Property Management gave tenants about a weeks notice before the pest control action began, but the mother and her children had nowhere to go.

Property manager Josh Isbell said Wednesday tenants were informed several weeks before the process began so that they could choose to have their apartments sprayed or not for bed bugs. Isbell also said management went out to the properties to talk with tenants and tell them what would be required of them if they opted for the service.

This procedure was entirely optional, he said. The majority of the properties werent affected, and the ones that were, were mostly vacant, and we just decided to offer it to all of our properties.

Isbell said the spraying began about 1 p.m. each time they sprayed, and tenants were allowed to go back to their apartments after the close of business.

Jones said her concern was she had to stay outside with her property to protect it.

The thing is, I dont know anybody here, she said Tuesday as she waited outside.

Jones said she is disabled, on a fixed income and cant afford a hotel room for a day.

She and her children also had to remove all of her furniture and her belongings from the apartment. The kids missed a day of school because of it, and the family had to stay in the apartments parking lot all day to keep watch over their belongings.

Jones said the apartment should have provided a storage area for tenants to store their belongings while the apartments were being treated.

For tenants that opted to have their properties sprayed, removing the furniture from the apartment was recommended but not required, Isbell said. Because of that, no storage area for furniture was provided because it wasnt required that it be removed."

Jones said her particular apartment did not have bed bugs, but another did, causing the management to spray for the hard-to-kill insect in all of the apartments, which they are doing over the course of days or more.

Sniffing dogs help get rid of bed bugs – The Daily Courier

For anyone who has dealt with the irritating bites of bedbugs, that cute little rhyme about not letting the bedbugs bite is anything but cute. Theyre tiny, hide most of the time, and come out only to feed at night, generally on human blood.

Chances are, you heard little about them until perhaps a decade ago. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a joint statement in 2010 that said, Although bedbug populations dropped dramatically during the mid-20th century, the United States is one of many countries now experiencing an alarming resurgence in the population of bedbugs.

Though the exact cause is not known, experts suspect the resurgence is associated with increased resistance of bedbugs to available pesticides, greater international and domestic travel, lack of knowledge regarding control of bedbugs, the statement said.

The good news is that bedbugs can be exterminated, and, once gone, will stay gone unless theyre re-introduced into the home.

Bedbugs (cimex lectularius)

Bedbugs, contrary to some myths, are not necessarily a sign of a dirty or unsanitary home.

Youd be surprised where you can pick up bedbugs. You can bring bedbugs home from a movie theater, they come home from the library, you can bring bedbugs home from a hotel, said Cecil Newell at Yavapai County Community Health Services. They like to hitchhike.

Once in a home, they will bite their victimmostly at nightdrink until full, and then go into hiding in very tiny cracks and crevasses.

The good news, according to the CDC, is that they dont transmit or spread disease, although some people can be allergic to their bites.

Preventing an infestation can be difficult. Although theyre small, and can be seen, most people arent likely to notice them until they wake up with itchy bites.

What doesnt work

Pesticides, whether theyre the spray can variety or the bug bomb, dont work.

The bedbugs simply retreat further into their hiding places until the application is over and the poison subsides.

Another treatment involves the use of diatomaceous earth (DE), which does kill the bedbugs. However, several sources, including the EPA, point out that diatomaceous earth is a hazard to the human respiratory system, and advise against both pool-grade and food-grade DE use.

What does work

The best treatment for bedbugs is heat, but that needs to be done by a professional, Newell said.

Locally, AZEX Pest Solutions does use heat to eliminate bedbugs, said Sonny Henegar, who heads up the K9 program and says it works very well.

The company uses dogs to identify whether a location has a bedbug infestation; the dogs are trained to sniff out their distinctive odor and alert to show the handler exactly where bedbugs are hiding.

The bedbugs live in places that you cant spray chemicals, he said. They live in books, they lie in pillowcases.

But his company heats up a room to about 130 degrees to kill the critters.

How it works is ingenious: the heat is slowly increased over hours time, Henegar said, and like the story of the frog that sat in a pan on water while the water was heated to boiling, the bugs dont seem to realize theyre in trouble until its too late.

This method also has the advantage of killing the bedbugs, not driving them away, only to return. The idea behind our heaters is, because its a low heat, they dont leave the room, he said.

AZEX is now teaching pest control companies from around the U.S. how to deal with bedbugs at its facility in Prescott, Henegar said. We teach them how to use heat to eradicate bedbugs.

Bedbug exterminators are doing a booming business these days.

(Bedbugs) are everywhere, he said.

The Rochester Public Library's Sully Branch closed early Friday after bed bugs were discovered there.

The library at530 Webster Ave. is connected to the Thomas P. Ryan R-Center. It will reopen Tuesday to allow a pest control company to spray the building over the weekend.

No evidence of bed bugs were discovered in the adjoining recreation center. But as a precaution, the R-Center will be closed Saturday to allow exterminators to investigate for signs of bed bugs.

If library patrons are concerned about materials borrowed from the Sully Branch, materials may be returned to the library in a zip-top plastic bag. They are asked to indicate if any evidence of bed bugs was discovered on the materials.

"In recent years, incidents of bed bug infestations have become a growing problem for all public buildings including hotels, schools, hospitals and libraries," a city spokesman said in a release. "Because bed bugs can hide in items like jackets, backpacks and other soft materials, they can be brought into any location."

According to the city, libraries are not suitable environments for bed bugs to thrive. "They require a human or animal host to survive and spread."

The Rochester Public Library has established "pest-control policies in its building-maintenance program." This includes regular inspections and treatments recommended by exterminators. Library staff are trained to recognize and report bed bugs to take immediate action to prevent the spread.
