BedBugGuide.com is designed to educate and inform the general population about the risks of bed bugs, in addition to offering advice and tips on preventing them from spreading. We use real case studies from bed bug sufferers combined with helpful tips to help you and your family eliminate the bugs and and stay bed bug free.

Weve been operating in the bed bug industry for 4 years. In that time we've developed an incredibly effective, safe solution to completely eradicate bed bugs from your home.

As anyone who has suffered from them will tell you - bed bugs are no joke.

Theyre more than a harmless phrase that you say to your kids at bedtime.

More than folklore, or a problem that only affects the lower classes.

Bed Bugs are now present in all 50 states and the epidemic is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. According to a study by the National Pest Management Association and the University of Kentucky, bed bug numbers increased by over 500% between 2004 and 2009. Certain states such as Ohio, went from zero bed bug related issues, to hundreds of calls to pest management companies in just a few years.

13% of Americans have either experienced bed bugs personally, or know someone who has. Alarmingly, this figure has actually increased from 10 years ago, with families in urban areas (80% of the US population) being more at risk than rural ones. There have even been reports of bugs appearing in laundromats, on public transportation, and in movie theatres.

Its not just the average US home either - in 2010 clothing giant Hollister had to temporarily close its flagship store in New York City after a reported bed bug outbreak.

The adult male bed bug can live for up to one year without eating. And, the adult female lays up to 250 eggs, with these eggs being near invisible to the naked eye.

Even though the physical effects of beg bugs are harmless to humans, youd be a fool to discount a bed bug invasion as anything less than serious.

If youve never had bed bugs before it can be a terrifying experience to say the least. The paranoia alone is something that keeps you up at night in a state of worry and anxiety. The emotional pain and distress that comes with them is a traumatic experience. Its a position that no one wants to be in, especially no one with a family.

BedBugGuide.com aims to separate fact from fiction when it comes to dealing with bed bugs. Helping you, the consumer, make informed decisions if you do happen to find yourself in a situation where you are forced to deal with them.

How to Get Rid of Bedbugs Fast – Best Way to Kill Bed Bugs

The resurgence of bed bugs in American homes has caused many a sleepless night but not everything you hear is true. Before you start pointing fingers at the reasons your home is infested or why you do or don't have a bed bugs problem, know this: Entomologist Richard Pollack, Ph.D., has found fewer than 10% of the critters people identify as bed bugs actually are bed bugs. That's also why he doesn't trust websites that list reports of bed bugs at hotels.

If you suspect you've got some unwelcome visitors at your house, here is everything you need to know about these nasty insects first:

Aller-Ease

Bed bugs most notoriously hitch rides on luggage, but traveling isn't the only way to pick them up: They can easily be carried into the house on secondhand furniture, clothing, boxes, and pillows, so inspect such items very carefully. Encasement products like Good Housekeeping Seal holder AllerEase mattress protector can also prevent bugs that do make it inside from hunkering down in crevices.

But while reports of bed bugs at movie theaters and in retail stores have made headlines, it's rare that someone actually brings them home, says Jody Gangloff-Kaufmann, an urban entomologist at Cornell University.

Whether you have a messy home or a neat home, bed bugs only care that their food source, a.k.a. people, are nearby. Luckily, there's no evidence they transmit diseases as they feed. The real threat: Itchy, red bites, which are the first sign of an infestation.

Unfortunately, long-sleeved pajamas won't shield you from bed bug bites. In fact, that's one of the tell-tale signs of an infestation. "If you wake up with numerous bites, especially under your clothes, it could be bed bugs," says David Dunham of Go Green Bedbug Dogs.

Not everyone experiences the same skin reaction though. "It's common for one person to become the host or the person getting all the bites, while their spouse or partner will get no bites at all," he adds. "Usually the person not getting bites will discredit their partner's concerns.

"You should ask lots of questions to the companies you interview, because a good company will answer them and will never pressure you to make an appointment," says Dunham. Asking the company about their success rate and if their treatment comes with a guarantee, should their efforts not be successful, is a must.

While some bugs will die in the washing machine, it's the heat of the dryer that will kill more of them. At least 60 minutes on a high-heat setting should do the trick, according to New York State Integrated Pest Management. Immediately dispose of the used plastic bags and put clean clothes in new ones. Don't take the items out of the bag until the infestation is successfully controlled.

This City Has the Worst Bed Bug Infestation in America – AOL

This is one superlative no one wants their city to win. Pest control company Orkin recently released its Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list, compiled with data of the places where Orkin performed the most treatments for bed bugs from December 2019 through November 2020. The reality is that bed bugs have shown up in cities and towns all across America, from mansions to cramped apartments. Theyve been increasing in number in the United States since the turn of the century due to increased travel and limitations on certain insecticides, but numbers have been especially high in these cities. Theres not too much you can do to stop them; early detection is critical because there is no foolproof way to keep them out of your home. Here are the warning signs youre about to have a bed bug problem.

Taking first place on the list was Chicago. Clearly, bed bugs love the Windy City. Rounding out the top (bottom?) five, in order, were Baltimore; Washington, D.C.; Detroit; and Columbus, Ohio. Chicago moved up from being third on the list last year and swapped with Washington, D.C., which took the top spot in 2020. Chicago also took the top spot for the most rat-infested city. Yuck!

Cities six through ten were Cleveland; Indianapolis; Cincinnati; Los Angeles; and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Grand Rapids, at spot ten in 2021, jumped a whopping eight spots from last year. Los Angeles moved down five spots from last year and New York, a city you think would come in much higher on the list, moved down six spots from last year, coming in at number 12. No matter where you are, beds arent the only places youll find these peststhis is how to spot bed bugs in your airplane seat.

So if you live in or are visiting any of these cities, its wise to be a little more vigilant about your susceptibility to bed bugs and maybe stock up on a bed bug killer like this. According to the CDC, bed bugs often come into contact with people by way of luggage, bags, clothes, bedding, furniture, or anywhere they can easily hide and hitch a ride. Always inspect hotel rooms or any place you might be stayingheres a guide to how to do so properly.

These Are the Most Bed BugInfested Cities in the U.S. – Thrillist

New York City isn't even in the top 10.

Bed bugs are every city-dweller's biggest fear, and new data suggests that the issue isn't confined to just NYC and LA. Pest control company Orkin compiled a list of the 50 most bed buginfested cities in the US right now, revealing that some metropolitan areas aren't as immune as you'd expect.

Orkin based its latest findings on which cities required the most bed bug treatments between December 2019 and November 2020. The ranking took both residential and commercial treatments into consideration.

Last year, Washington, DC held the title of most bed buginfested city. This year, a new metropolis takes its place as the country's biggest hotbed for infestation: Chicago.

Despite its bad reputation, NYC didn't even make the top 10 list. The densely populated area landed in 12th place this year, down from sixth place in 2020. LA also improved, moving from the fourth worst city in the nation to the ninth worst. It's a minor improvement, but improvement nonetheless.

Toledo, Ohiowhich barely broke into the top 50 last yearis on the worst trajectory, jumping from 50th place to 27th place after only 12 months. Below is the full list, which also shows in parentheses how each city's rank changed from last year's report.

The moral of the story here is that you can never be too safe. As Ben Hottel, an Orkin entomologist, put it in a statement, "Bed bugs are a concern for everyone because they are master hitchhikers, traveling home with people when they likely dont realize it."

Whether you're in Chicago, Minneapolis, or really any other city, you should alwayskeep an eye out for bed bugs so that if they find their way in your home, you can treat them fast. A little fear can be healthy, as long as you don't let it control you.

Two Pa. cities in top 20 of Orkins bed bug infestation list – pennlive.com

Even though fewer people traveled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, bed bugs did not get the memo to stay home.

Chicago topped Orkins Top 50 Bed Bug Cities List for last year with Baltimore and Washington, D.C., coming in second and third.

Orkin said it bases it list on treatment data from the metro areas where Orkin performed the mostbed bug treatmentsfromDecember 1, 2019November 30, 2020. The ranking includes both residential and commercial treatments.

Unfortunately, Pennsylvania has two cities in the top 20 - Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Philadelphia dropped two places from last year, so that is good news.

Here are the rankings after Chicago, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.:

19. Pittsburgh

20. Denver

According to Orkin the bed bugs can still be lurking waiting for people to resume travel.

Its easy to forget that bed bugs are still very much a threat and should be top of mind for anyone who is itching to take a trip. Bed bugs can survive for several months while waiting for their next blood meal, so theyre likely to emerge when a food source, humans, become available, Orkin said.

Typically, bed bugs are 3/16 inch long and are mostly nocturnal insects that come out of hiding to take blood meals from sleeping humans and are red to dark brown in color. Bed bugs are hematophagous, which means blood is their only food source. They can travel from place to place with ease, including items such as luggage, purses and other personal belongings.

Orkin recommends these steps to inspect for bed bugs using the acronym - S.L.E.E.P.
