22 Classic Board Game Commercials More Fun Than Their Games

Two days later and we still have Super Bowl (commercial) fever. We've been on YouTube for days feeding our hunger for awesome Super Bowl ads new and old. And as we traveled further down the rabbit hole, we stumbled across some wonderfully over-the-top commercials from the '80s and early '90s--most of them promoting the SUCKIEST board games ever.

It seems as if every board game company from 1980 to 1996 spent 4 percent of their budget on developing the game and 96 percent on coming up with a kick-ass commercial. And the best part is how they all end with some snotty kid exclaiming, "I win!" But they never show the real outcome, which is one smug, happy child and three other kids crying and/or throwing pieces across the room.

Well today, everyone wins because we're rolling out the nostalgia trunk and have 22 awesome board game commercials from our childhood (or even before some of your were born).

Crossfire

This is still the gold standard for exciting board game commercials. That jingle gave us seven words and a lifetime of sing-alongs. Crossfire was the most fun way to get carpal tunnel pangs until we were old enough to masturbate.

Shark Attack

"Ya know what, let's dispense with this 'counting all the dots' nonsense and just do a color-coded die." This was not a fun game for your colorblind friend.

Thin Ice

The crappiest game ever made: The main components were marbles and a GD wet tissue.

Mouse Trap

If there's one thing kids love, it's meticulously constructing a Rube Goldberg machine. Since nobody ever actually finished putting the booby traps together, we always assumed this ad was documentary footage of the only time the game was actually played by real human children.

Tornado Rex

This was one of those overwrought games that the neighborhood "kid with all the cool toys" had. This kid also had one of those "Ghostbusters" proton packs and the Vortex Whistler.

Guess Who?

"Hey, you wanna sit across from each other and ask yes or no questions for 10 minutes? Nah, me neither." Awful game, but the commercial made it seem amazing--until the disclaimer kills the dream: "Game cards do not actually talk."

Connect Four

How come this one didn't have a disclaimer saying, "Game pieces do not actually talk"? WHY ARE YOU TOYING WITH CHILDREN'S EMOTIONS LIKE THAT?

Crocodile Dentist

This ad was effective because the children seem to be legitimately terrified of the biting crocodile. Milton Bradley always said, "Fear makes for the greatest board games." Milton Bradley the baseball player.

Splat!

Any game requiring clay is way too labor-intensive to be fun.

The Grape Escape

All the tediousness of Mouse Trap combined with the clay-molding delicateness of Splat! Nobody owned this game. Nobody.

Battleship

Explosion sound effects! Variable skill levels! An entire generation could've told you a movie version will never top the drama of this commercial.

Perfection

Perfection--um, is that the game title, or the title of this commercial? All the '90s hallmarks are here: cheesy CGI, a "kooky" voice, neon shirts under blue blazers and LOUD NOISES. If you needed any more proof that our attention spans are rapidly degrading, check out the much more subtle ad from a few years earlier.

Operation

Medical malpractice never seemed so wacky!

Jenga

TELL ME this commercial didn't make you want to grow up so you could go to cool adult parties like this! Well, now you can.

Stack-a-saurus Nex

The game in which you stacked multicolored tiles like so many Parker Brothers dinosaur puns. Also, this "Jenga For Kids" commercial starred the gingeriest ginger kid in all the land.

13 Dead End Drive

If Clue and Mouse Trap had a baby, it would be left in a basket on the steps of a monastery because nobody would want it.

Knockout

Are the cartoon characters just skater dudes who happen to be doing construction in their spare time? Or are they construction workers who skate to work?

Bed Bugs

You're a kid and you think bed bugs are just so hilarious and cute. Then you grow up and move to New York City. It's a metaphor for life, really.

Rock Jocks

This was another toy to cash in on kids' love of anything that stretches (see also: Silly Putty, Stretch Armstrong, jeans with elastic waistbands).

Loopin' Louie

Honestly, we don't remember this one and have no idea what the hell is going on here. Kind of like how our parents view "Louie."

Sorry!

If those anthropomorphized pieces were true to life, they'd be screaming "f*** you!" and flipping the board over.

Picnic Panic

Wouldn't you just love to be in the concept meetings for this crap?

Louisiana family battles bed bugs

MONDAY NIGHT ON WAFB 9NEWS AT TEN:  Watch our Special Report on Bed Bugs and see how one Baton Rouge company is using unconventional methods to seek out bed bugs inside area homes and hotels.

A South Louisiana family brought back some unwanted souvenirs from their trip to Alabama. They were covered in bite from bed bugs.

A Livingston Parish woman, her husband, and her young daughter all got bed bug bites while at a hotel in Dothan, Alabama.  They are now being treated for their bites. They do not believe any bed bugs made the trip home with them but they are currently treating their home as a precaution.

Bed bugs are small insects that feed on the blood of mammals and birds. Adult bed bugs are oval, wingless and rusty red colored, and have flat bodies, antennae and small eyes. They are visible to the naked eye, but often hide in cracks and crevices. When bed bugs feed, their bodies swell and become a brighter red. In homes, bed bugs feed primarily on the blood of humans, usually at night when people are sleeping.

Many people will get bed bugs from infested hotel rooms while traveling.  New York City has been dubbed the "bed bug capital of the world" because so many travelers move in and out of that city and some hotel rooms there are infested.   Travelers will frequently return home and unknowingly have bed bugs in their luggage.

A man known as "The Bug Doctor" from the Pest Cemetery website has a suggestion for people who live in warmer climates who hope to prevent bed bugs from entering their home after a trip. He suggests leaving your unpacked luggage inside your hot car before bringing your luggage inside.  Be sure to remove electronics first.   On a warm day, the temperature in your car can quickly rise to 120 degrees and that way for several hours. That heat is high enough to kill bed bugs. After leaving the luggage in your car for several hours, The Bug Doctor says it should then be safe to bring indoors.

BedBug Shredder Brings a New Three Step Solution for Killing BedBugs

Three step process combines non-toxic mechanical methods with
laundry additive and spray to create a complete solution.

Austin, TX
(PRWEB) January 17, 2012

Scientists have combined three different steps to create
Planet
Amazing's "Bed Bug Shredder" product, with the first step
being a dust that attaches itself to the legs of bed bugs, according to
Planet Amazing spokesperson Justin Douglas. The dust is used on
carpets and is non-toxic. Mr. Douglas says that scientists
studied the bugs for years before coming up with a way to
actually disable them from movement using the dust.

The problem is serious, says Mr. Douglas: "People are looking
for a bed bug cure. Serious
bed bug infestations and
chronic attacks can cause anxiety, stress, and insomnia.
Development of refractory delusional parasitosis is possible,
as victims develop an overwhelming obsession with bedbugs."

According to news service CNN, bedbugs have increased to
epidemic proportions in the last 10 years. For example, CNN
says that in New York City for the two year period of 2003 to
2004 there were a total of 82 occurences of bed bug
infestations, while in the year of 2009 to 2010 in the same
city there were over 9,500 occurences of bed bugs, which is
more than a 10,000% increase. CNN says "a professional
extermination to deal with a problem that all too often won't
go away costs somewhere between $200 to $1500 -- per room,"
making it expensive to deal with the problem.

"BedBug Shredder can solve this problem with the three step
scientific process," Mr. Douglas says. "It's a complete three
part system that kills every last bedbug in your house. Because
it's a mechanical killer bedbugs cannot become immune to it's
killing strength like ordinary pesticides. Its ingredients are
recognized by the United States EPA as GRAS (Generally Regarded
as Safe and Effective). Its main ingredients are non-toxic to
humans and pets so you can apply it yourself without hiring an
expensive service."

"Bedbugs have to travel across floors and carpets to get to
your bed," Mr. Douglas explains. "Scientists discovered a way
to stop them without using chemicals, and it is the first step
of our process. We make sure they never make the trip across
your carpet to your bed or anywhere else. BedBugShredder
carpet
dust kills bed bugs by simply shredding their
intestines. The rough microcrystal spears are specially refined
to destroy bed bugs mechanically and not chemically. These
micro crystals attach to the legs and bodies of bed bugs as
they crawl across it. When they groom it off, the crystals are
like ground glass in the bugs intestines, shredding them from
the inside out, resulting in internal bleeding, mass
dehydration and ultimately death. Because of the microscopic
size of the crystals in BedBugShredder, carpet dust is harmless
to your family and pets as their intestinal tracts are hundreds
times the size of that of the bed bugs. Its fine white powder
lightly covers the immediate area of infestation, typically
around the bed, furniture, for just a few days, that's all it
takes for those areas to be bed bug free. It's simple to apply
and you never have to worry about it harming your family or
pets."

website, or its Amazon.com bedbug cure page.

Saratoga Springs seeks answers on housing head's salary

By: Mark Mulholland

SARATOGA SPRINGS - As Executive Director
of the Saratoga Springs Housing Authority, Ed
Spychalski oversees about 380 low to moderate income
apartments and draws a publicly funded salary of 152-thousand
dollars a year.

Spychalski's compensation has drawn criticism from residents
recently, after he told them the authority couldn't afford to
eradicate bed bugs in some of the apartments.

Spychalski was the authority's maintenance supervisor before
becoming executive director in 2006.  That year, his
salary was almost 75-thousand dollars. In the five years since,
his salary has more than doubled, to just under 152-thousand
dollars a year, plus benefits.

"I'd like to find out out about the compensation packages, the
vehicles, the potential nepotism. I think these are all fair
questions and I'm waiting for their answers,"
said city Accounts Commissioner John Franck has
asked for a public hearing with the Housing Authority for later
this month. He wants to hear from the authority why their
director makes more than New York's Lieutenant
Governor, and 14-thousand dollars a year more than the director
of the Albany Housing Authority who oversees more than four
times the number of units.

After a public meeting Thursday, Spychalski wouldn't comment
about his compensation. But Dennis Brunelle, the chairman
of the authority's board offered this. "We feel he's doing a
lot more than most people understand. The salary has created a
lot of stir and we're going to take a look at it. But there's
reasons why it is that high."

Some residents of the apartments stand squarely behind the
director, others say he should resign.

"His attitude is don't bother me, I don't have time for
you," said Lisa Vincent, a resident
of Stonequist Apartments since 2006.

Again, Spychalski chose not to comment Thursday. The Housing
Authority says they'll have more to say regarding his
compensation in the next week to ten days, which would coincide
with the public hearing Commissioner Franck has scheduled for
January 31st.
