New Technology Offers Solution to US Bed Bug Epidemic

Travel-Sized Spray Developed to Help Travellers Avoid Contracting Bed Bugs

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Nov 25, 2013 (Menafn - Marketwired via COMTEX) --AgBiotech company Terramera today announced the launch of Proof(TM), a plant-based spray technology that is the first and only product available on the market that kills both bed bugs and their eggs with or without direct contact. Recognizing the market need for a safer and more effective alternative to control the growing bed bug problem, the EPA fast-tracked approval of the new bed bug spray. Pest management professionals have used the commercial version of the product for over a year. Now it's now available for consumers in 49 states across the US. The expedited approval process speaks to both the safety and efficacy of the product to protect the millions of Americans that are susceptible to getting bed bugs.

"Bed bugs are highly transmittable which makes them a major concern, especially with the heavy travel in the holiday season," said Karn Manhas, CEO and founder of Terramera. "Nearly one quarter of domestic travellers have had bed bugs. We're happy to have Proof(TM) in the hands of consumers before the busy travel season to help people avoid bringing bed bugs home for the holidays."

Studies show that 23 per cent of people who have travelled within the U.S. have dealt with bed bugs and 43 per cent of people that have travelled internationally have had bed bugs. According to a 2013 bed bug survey by the National Pest Management Association, 75 per cent of outbreaks in the United States occur in hotels or motels, and 21 per cent occur on airplanes, buses and trains.

"Bed bugs continue to increase their presence across the United States and consumers need a product that is effective. Bed bug eggs are a big part of the problem in the spread of these tiny pests. Their eggs are hardy, glued down where they are laid and travel easily," said Dr. Annett Rozek, Chief Scientific Officer at Terramera. "Until now there has been nothing available that kills bed bug eggs without direct contact. That is why Proof(TM) is such an important product, it will kill eggs and keep working to stop eggs from hatching on treated areas."

Terramera's patent-pending inSpirium technology helps Proof(TM) deliver cold-pressed neem oil more effectively into bed bugs and their eggs. Travellers can now Proof(TM) their bags and belongings to protect themselves from bed bugs at home and on the road. For more information visit: http://www.bugproof.com

British Columbia i /brt klmb/ (B.C.) (French: la Colombie-Britannique, C.-B.) is the westernmost of Canada's provinces and is known for its natural beauty, as reflected in its Latin motto, Splendor sine occasu ("Splendour without Diminishment"). Its name was chosen by Queen Victoria in 1858. In 1871, it became the sixth province of Canada.

The capital of British Columbia is Victoria, the fifteenth largest metropolitan region in Canada. The largest city is Vancouver, the third-largest metropolitan area in Canada and the second-largest in the Pacific Northwest. In 2009, British Columbia had an estimated population of 4,419,974 (about two million of whom were in Metro Vancouver). The province is currently governed by Premier Gordon Campbell.

British Columbia's economy is largely resource-based. It is the endpoint of transcontinental highways and railways and the site of major Pacific ports, which enable international trade. Because of its mild weather, the province is agriculturally rich, particularly in the Fraser and Okanagan valleys. Its climate also creates an environment for cultural and recreational opportunities. British Columbia hosted the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The province's name was chosen by Queen Victoria when the Colony of British Columbia, i.e. "the Mainland", became a British colony in 1858. It refers to the Columbia District, the British name for the territory drained by the Columbia River, which has its origins and upper reaches in southeastern British Columbia, which was the namesake of the pre-Oregon Treaty Columbia Department of the Hudson's Bay Company. Queen Victoria chose British Columbia to distinguish what was the British sector of the Columbia District from that of the United States ("American Columbia" or "Southern Columbia"), which became the Oregon Territory in 1848 as a result of the treaty.

British Columbia is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west, by the U.S. state of Alaska on the northwest, and to the north by the Yukon and the Northwest Territories, on the east by the province of Alberta, and on the south by the U.S. states of Washington, Idaho, and Montana. The current southern border of British Columbia was established by the 1846 Oregon Treaty, although its history is tied with lands as far south as the California border. British Columbia's land area is 944,735square kilometres (364,800 sqmi). British Columbia's rugged coastline stretches for more than 27,000kilometres (17,000 mi), and includes deep, mountainous fjords and about six thousand islands, most of which are uninhabited.

British Columbia's capital is Victoria, located at the southeastern tip of Vancouver Island. The province's most populous city is Vancouver, which is not on Vancouver Island but rather is located in the southwest corner of the mainland (an area often called the Lower Mainland). Other major cities include Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Richmond, Delta, and New Westminster in the Lower Mainland; Abbotsford, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and Langley in the Fraser Valley; Nanaimo on Vancouver Island; and Kelowna and Kamloops in the Interior. Prince George is the largest city in the northern part of the province, while a village northwest of it, Vanderhoof, is near the geographic centre of the province.

The Coast Mountains and the Inside Passage's many inlets provide some of British Columbia's renowned and spectacular scenery, which forms the backdrop and context for a growing outdoor adventure and ecotourism industry. Seventy-five percent of the province is mountainous (more than 1,000metres (3,300 ft) above sea level); 60% is forested; and only about 5% is arable.

Bed Bugs – HealthLinkBC File #95

The common bed bug is a small, reddish-brown insect. Bed bugs are oval shaped with flattened bodies. The size of a bed bug is 5 to 7 mm long or 3/8 of an inch. They are usually no bigger than a lady bug.

Bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and animals to survive. Unlike some parasites, such as fleas or lice, bed bugs do not live on their hosts but only visit them to feed. Bed bugs are most active at night. A bed bug bite is similar to a mosquito bite. It is painless and may result in a small, red, itchy bump. However, many people have no reaction at all.

Bed bugs cannot fly and prefer to hide close to their hosts when not feeding. Bed bugs can live for up to a year without feeding. They can be found in homes, apartments, hotels, shelters, and student dormitories. Bed bugs can also hide on clothing or in luggage when you travel. These can be brought to places like your home or hotel.

There is no evidence that bed bugs spread disease to people. They are more of a nuisance than a health concern. However, public health officials remain concerned about bed bugs because of the possibility of secondary infections. There is a risk that you could get an infection when you scratch the area of the bite.

The reaction from the bite usually goes away within hours or days without treatment. Applying an antiseptic lotion or antibiotic cream to the area can help prevent infection and ease symptoms.

In addition to skin irritations, bed bug infestations may cause some people anxiety, stress and insomnia.

Symptoms of an infection can include:

If you have symptoms, contact your health care provider or call 8-1-1 to speak to a registered nurse.

While some people do not react at all to bed bug bites, others may have allergic reactions, such as small local skin reactions. In rare cases, some people may have severe allergic reactions.

Allergic sensitivity in a person may increase the more they are bit.

Bed Bug Heat Treatment Process | Heat-N-Go Bed Bug Extermination

Killing bed bugs with heat is not a new concept. Heat has been used for pest control dating back to 1762 in France.

Thermal Remediation is the most thorough and comprehensive method of eradicating bed bugs proving lethal at all stages of the bed bugs life cycle. This revolutionary, eco-friendly process to treat beg bug infestations with heat is the most cost-effective and least disruptive treatment option, saving your mattress, your furniture, your time and your money.

Most bed bug chemical treatments are extremely tedious and typically require multiple visits. Studies have shown that bed bugs may be growing increasingly insecticide resistant, due to excessive use. (There are fewer treatment alternatives as regulatory restrictions have diminished many of the chemical options.)

Bed bugs are attracted to body heat and heat sources.

Rather than trying to escape, they are attracted to the heat and emerge from hiding to come out to the heat source. The heating happens quickly so that the bugs have no time to escape, and the temperature is controlled and maintained until every last bed bug is dead. Heat-N-Go uses industrial electric heaters and convection fans to heat the infected spaces.

The key to an effective heat treatment is the correct balance of temperature, timing, humidity levels, and monitoring. A typical treatment may take about 6 to 8 hours to complete.

Complete heat monitoring system to ensure the right balance of heat is attained and maintained utilizing sensors and attaining computer printouts.

Before Heat-N-Go, heats your residence we provide you with a checklist of items to be removed beforehand and we do an inspection before the heating begins.

Pets and aerosol cans, for example, should be removed from the residence before a treatment. Your electronics, the contents of your refrigerator and your furniture may all safely remain in the house.

The preparation instructions will provide you with a list of items that can and cannot remain in the treatment area. Our goal is to eliminate the bed bug and its eggs. The goal is more likely to be reached if preparation instructions are followed as specified.
