Consequently, measures are urgently needed to determine whether bedbugs are present in a dwelling, in order to implement control measures. Yet these small creatures are notoriously difficult to find, and current methods for detecting bed bugs are somewhat clunky and expensive.

The good news is that researchers from Simon Fraser University in Canada recently reported the recipe for the signal that bedbugs use to find one another.

This should make it much easier to rouse the little critters from their hiding places and determine whether they are causing an infestation, and it might also be useful for exterminating them.

The first step in conducting these experiments was to grow a colony of bed bugs. This was a challenging prospect, as bed bugs only feed on blood. One of the scientists in the study, a member of a husband and wife research team, volunteered her arms for nearly 200,000 bites to keep the colony healthy and growing. (Her husband apparently wasnt a suitable donor, as he developed a severe itch when bitten.) As a consequence of all this feeding, the bed bugs produced a large volume of shed skin and feces, which was the raw material for isolating the aggregation signal.

The scientists used chemicals to extract the key components that caused bed bugs to aggregate from 18,000 of their shed skins. It took about 18 months to collect the number of skins needed for their experiments.

They also allowed 300 bed bugs to poop on pieces of paper for a month, and then analyzed the fecal material contained on the paper with a machine called a gas chromatograph/mass spectrophotometer to detect the various individual components excreted by the bed bugs.

To test whether they found the correct compound, the researchers put bed bugs in a central round glass container, connected by small tubular passageways to two other containers with either a control scent or a test scent they had extracted from bed bug skin and feces. They then allowed the bed bugs to roam the chambers overnight, and determined where they ended up the next morning. If the bed bugs were attracted to the test scent over the control scent, the researchers knew they were on to something. By testing a variety of compounds isolated from the bed bug skins and feces, the researchers ultimately determined that a cocktail of histamine plus five other volatile chemicals was sufficient to attract and keep bed bugs in place. As the final test, the scientists went into infested apartments in Vancouver, British Columbia, and determined that their scent mixtures did effectively attract bed bugs in the wild.

This research will hopefully lead to more effective ways of detecting and eliminating bed bugs from a dwelling, and thereby eliminate the rashes and sleepless nights experienced by people who share their homes with these nasty little creatures.

Fort McMurray Baby’s Death Caused By Pesticide For Bed Bugs

Investigators say the death of a baby and the hospitalization of four other children are linked to high levels of an insecticide found in the family's northern Alberta apartment.

Brad Grainger, deputy chief of operations for the Fort McMurray fire department, said the family brought the insecticide, which is similar to aluminum phosphide pellets used in North America, home from Pakistan, where they were on vacation about 10 days ago.

The pellets, when put into fumigator, emit a phosphine gas, which can be toxic.

"We're not sure how long the family was exposed,'' Grainger said. "The younger that you are, the more susceptible you can be.''

One of the children, an eight-month-old baby, died in hospital and four others were in critical condition Monday. Ages and names were not released.

Grainger didn't say what type of insect the family was trying to kill, but the Edmonton Journal quoted a relative who said it was bed bugs.

Grainger said that type of insecticide is a controlled substance in Canada.

He said an acceptable level of exposure is one part per million over 15 minutes or 0.3 parts per million over eight hours. One room in the apartment had concentrated levels of the insecticide at four parts per million.

"(That's) about four times the average short duration exposure (that's safe),'' he said.

Top Bed Bug Infested Cities in 2015 | BEDBUGS.NET | The …

By Admin, Posted January 22nd 2015

Orkin recently released their annual list of the most Bed Bug infested cities of 2014. Not surprisingly, Chicago has taken the top spot for the third year in a row. While other cities have been seeing a reduction in the amount of bed bug infestations that they have experienced, Chicago still shows signs that their problem is not going away anytime soon.

It is interesting to note that Dallas, Seattle, Milwaukee, Charleston and the Grand Rapids all had significant increases in the number of Bed Bug occurrences, while Atlanta, Boston and Miami all had significant drops in the amount of reports.

These changes could reflect some of the proactive measures that the cities are doing to try and contain the issue of bed bugs among their residences.

The city of New York has continued to see a decline in the number of Bed Bugs reported since the big spike a few years ago. One of the reasons for the big decline in bed bugs reported was some of the measures that were implemented to ensure that landlords would put measures in place to prevent bed bugs from entering the building.

New York should be applauded for their continued reduction in the amount of Bed Bug occurrences throughout the city.

Here is the full list of the 50 most Bed Bug infested cities in America:

Chicago

Detroit (+2)

Woman allows bed bugs to feed on her for 5 years, makes game-changing discovery

VANCOUVER, British Columbia Regine Gries has been bitten by more than 1,000 bedbugs each week for the last five years and she allowed it to happen.

In fact, Gries welcomed the 180,000 bites.

Now her literal blood sacrifice has paid off.

She and her husband Gerhard, both biologist at Simon Fraiser University in Vancouver British Columbia, say they have figured out how to attract and repel the bloodsucking parasites.

It turns out bed bugs communicate by odor. The researchers have been able to identify that histamine effectively repelled the creepy creatures.

They also discovered five odors that attract bedbugs and could be used to draw them into death traps.

Thats where Regine Gries blood comes back into the story. She sacrificed her own skin night after night as part of the experimentation process to feed the bugs they were using in their research.

But her blood, sweat and probably tears may all have been worth it for people plagued by the beasts.

A Victoria British Columbia company, Contech Enterprises, is now developing what is being called the first affordable bait and trap for detecting and monitoring infestations.

Contech expects it to be commercially available next year.
