Edmonton No. 6 on list of top Canadian bedbug cities – Edmonton Journal

Edmonton ranked sixth on a pest control companys list of the worst cities in Canada for bedbugs.

The city finished behind first-place Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Ottawa and St. Johns, N.L., according to a news release Tuesday from Orkin Canada.

The ranking is based on the number of commercial and residential treatments Orkin, which bills itself as Canadas largest pest-control company, carried out in each city between July 1, 2016, and June 2017.

It did not release the number of treatments in each city, saying the information is competitively sensitive.

Halifax; Sudbury, Ont.; Scarborough, Ont.; and Calgary rounded out the top 10.

Vishant Sharma, an Orkin Canada branch manager based in Edmonton, said the company receives daily calls about bedbug infestations.

He said the problem has gotten worse in the last decade as bedbugs hitchhike on travellers to the city including workers moving to the region during recent oil booms.

Theres a lot of reasons for it, he said of the increase. More international travel people are travelling a lot more now. People moving around, a lot of camp work, things like that.

Orkin Canadas ranking of the worst cities in Canada for bed bugs.

They can hide in any crack or crevice the width of a credit card, he added, making them particularly difficult to exterminate.

Sharma said the pests can travel on luggage, making the summer travel season a particularly bad time for beg bugs.

According to Alberta Health Services, inspectors conducted 849 housing pest inspections between April 1, 2016, and March 31, 2017. Of those, 257 contained bed bugs.

The bugs have even been detected in office buildings.TheNeil Crawford Provincial Centre in Edmonton, which houses Alberta Infrastructure, was being treated for bedbugs last month.

From bedbugs to break-ins, Scarborough tenants demand change … – CBC.ca

Complaints of bed bugs, stoves that turn on by themselves, break-ins and a landlord that tenants say ignores their cries for help led to a protest that saw dozens of residents demanding to speak with property management on Saturday afternoon.

Chanting, placard-waving tenants are accusing mega-manager,RealstarGroup, of failing to maintain the safety and livability of theirScarboroughbuilding complex in the Oakridge area.

They claim the company has createdan atmosphere of aggression in the process.

Mohammed Rokonuzzaman, a tenant representative of the building and member of advocacy group ACORN, has a list of grievances he says aren't being addressed. (Keith Burgess/CBC)

Residents say management has tried to charge them an air-conditioning fee, has notbothered to keep up with maintenance requestsand has failed to adequately address vehicle break-ins.

Realstar, whichmanages $6 billion in assets and operates hotel chains and residences in Canada and the United Kingdom, denies the charges.

"The problem is getting severe," said Mohammed Rokonuzzaman, resident of the building and a member of theAssociation of Community Organizations for Reform Now, otherwise known as ACORN.

ACORN, which bills itself as "an independent national organization of low- and moderate-income families,"helpedRokonuzzamanand other tenants organize Saturday's protest.

Amongst the thefts and pest problems, tenants say they have been called "rude"and"racist"by property managers, Rokonuzzaman alleges.

It's an attitude he sayscreates "systemic fear" for those living at 30 Denton Avenue.

Rokonuzzaman pointed totenants who he says have been sleeping on couches to avoid bedbugs, calling the conditions "miserable."

Other tenants at the protest agreed, chanting slogans with ACORN organizers.

Some, likeMohammad Ud-doula, think the management's treatment of tenants stands in the way of a friendly community.

"The main problem is their attitude towards us as tenants," said Ud-doula, who has lived in the building for nine years.

"More communication, more listening, and a better attitude" is needed from management, he added.

Ud-doula says residents asked management to place security cameras in the hallways on each floor to fight vandalism and theft, but says management refused, citing privacy issues.

Realstarsenior vice president Mark Hales told CBC Toronto on Saturday the company has done all they can to prevent break-ins, including the installation of 30 security cameras and new lights, hiring night security patrol and adding an electronic access system to the main entrance.

But of break-ins, Hales said, "unfortunately they can happen anywhere and we take them seriously."

Hales added he isn't currently aware of any outstanding maintenance problemsat the property.

'We have investigated and aren't aware of any issues of significance," he said.

ACORN organizers pointed to new apartment bylaws in the city, whichcame into effect July 1, as impetus for Realstar to take protesters' concerns seriously.

The bylaws, collectively called "RentSafeTO,"imposestandards for rental maintenance on managers that would compel them to carry out regular pest inspectionsand respond to service requests within a set timeframe.

Halessays Realstarstands by their staff at 30 Denton Avenue, but said lines of communication with tenants would be kept open.

"The residents are entitled to voice their concerns and we respect that," he said.

Tenants with complaints, Hales added, are"welcome to approach management office to discuss that."

Fort Sask. travellers return home with bed bugs – Fort Saskatchewan Record

Bite marks, bug infestation, cleaning, tossing furniture its been one hell of a week for some Fort families.

Roughly 30 to 40 students from Fort High and St. John Paul II spent a week under the sun in Punta Cana only with some returning home with bed bugs.

The trip was part of the annual Student Trip (S-Trip), which allows students to celebrate the end of high school with their friends. The trip took place from July 7-15.

S-Trip is designed specifically for high school students and includes non-stop action day and night. The trip was in Punta Cana, the Dominican. They stayed at the Blau Natura Beach Resort, explained one Fort Saskatchewan mother dealing with bed bugs. They flew back to Toronto and stayed overnight at the Four Points Sheraton. My son and his roommate both have bites on them. First (my friend) contacted me and we compared pictures of marks on our boys.

While an Exact number of those affected with bed bugs could not be confirmed, both parents had a local exterminator company confirmed the bed bug situation in Fort Saskatchewan homes and it was rectified immediately.

A second mother confirmed her son arrived home with sores on his body that he thought was just acne.

Once she had an extermination company come to the house, they confirmed it was a case of bed bugs.

She actually stated wherever he stayed they have lots of bed bugs as he has numerous bites. He already had his luggage in our house for about an hour before he showed me the bites, the dogs (with the exterminator) detected bugs in his room and luggage and the exterminator closed off the room and treated it, explained the Fort mother. I can tell you this is devastating... We took every precaution and treated our house, our child, and (we all) had four hot showers... All his belongings were either tossed or washed, all luggage was tossed. We vacuumed immediately as soon as he showed me the bites because he had his suitcases upstairs already... and we had to throw out our vacuum.

She also discarded her childs bedding, a love seat and then the dog with the extermination company confirmed they were all clear.

At the time of The Fort Record deadline, S-Trip had been notified of the bed bug issue by a parent, and stated it was the first time they had heard of bed bugs at the resort and would look into the matter.

How to handle bed bugs

Based west of Edmonton, owner Susan Baxter of Zenas Extermination Company detailed how to handle bed bugs.

If coming back from a trip leave your suitcase outside, put your clothes in garbage bags and you wash them one at a time. The person that was on the trip takes a shower when he comes home, does the hair, puts clothes in the laundry and check yourself for bites, said Baxter.

The bites, much like those from a mosquito, will vary in size, depending on allergies.

Whenever you stay in a hotel, travellers can search for signs of bed bugs, such as stains on the seems of the mattress. If there are many bed bugs you will see them running around.

You should also put your suitcase on the table, not the floor or the bed because those are the areas where youll find most of the bugs. If you do get into a room where there are bugs, get the hotel or resort to switch you out to another room, she said.

Bed bugs are reddish-brown in colour and are about the same size and shape as an apple seed but as thin as a slice of paper.

Baxter also said it is very hard to pin point where people pick up bed bugs when traveling due to how many different locations the person has been, whether hotel, airplane or other transportation.

The only time you can say exactly where you got them from, is if you go to a hotel and youve never had bed bugs before and you wake up the next morning with bites on you, then you know this is where youre getting bed bugs, she said.
