How Do I Treat a Bed Bug Infestation? – MyHealth.Alberta.ca

A bed bug infestation is not simple to deal with. You have to do several things at the same time:

You will need to clean and inspect at least once a week until you are sure the bed bugs are gone. This may take weeks, depending on how bad the infestation was, and, in a multi-family building, on how well everyone co-operates.

Chemical treatment is best done by a PCO. The PCO should give you written information that tells you what time the treatment will be, what chemicals will be used, how long you will need to be out of your home, and what you need to do ahead of time to prepare. It should tell you what cleaning you should do afterwards, as well. Ask your landlord if you arent given information.

There should be information for precautions for people who are sensitive to the smell of chemicals. It is a good idea to check with your doctor if you are concerned about people in your home that are in poor health or who are especially sensitive such as infants, seniors, or those with weak immune systems.

Home owners who want to do the chemical treatment themselves should know that using the pesticides incorrectly can make them sick. Use all chemicals properly. This means that you should follow the directions on the label and ask questions if you dont understand the instructions.

Not using insecticides properly may only cause the bed bugs to move to get away from the insecticide. They may move to new areas to escape the pesticides. Some chemicals that are licensed for use against bed bugs are only available to a licensed PCO.

Using pesticides in dwellings in Alberta is controlled by Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and regulations. Pesticides in Canada are licensed for use by Health Canada.

Heat treatment is a specialized process. You have to have special equipment and know how to heat rooms with bed bugs to a high enough temperature. If the room doesnt get hot enough, the bed bugs may move to a new, cooler area. Heat treatment does not take the place of de-cluttering, cleaning, and ongoing monitoring.

There are several dogs in Alberta that are trained to inspect for bed bugs. There are things you will be asked to do before the dog arrives. The dogs can find bed bugs faster than a trained professional. The dog and its handler work as a team to detect bed bugs. The dog should be trained and certified.

How are bed bugs spread?

How did I get bed bugs in the first place?

Bed bugs come in as stowaways in luggage, furniture, clothing, pillows, boxes, and more when these are moved between dwellings. Moving out wont solve the problem, since bed bugs will just come with you. In fact, while dealing with bed bugs its best not to sleep away from home. Used furniture, particularly bed frames and mattresses, are most likely to harbor bed bugs. Watch out for items found on the curb! Because they survive for many months without food, bed bugs could already be present in clean, vacant apartments.

In a few cases, bats or birds could introduce and maintain bed bugs and their close relativesusually bat bugs and bird bugs.

The source of the infestation determines where your inspection should start. Look through these scenarios and see which fits:

Only one bedroom: inspect that room first.

People watch TV or snooze on a couch: check it after inspecting the bedroom.

A traveler returned home: insects can hide in luggage and then crawl out when its dark and peacefulbegin where luggage was placed upon returning home.

A used bed or piece of furniture (bought or from the curb) was brought into the house: inspect it first.

The problem began after a visitor stayed overnight: inspect the beds that they slept in and where their luggage was placed. Next, inspect the nearest place where people sleep.

An infestation persists after several treatments by a professional: bed bugs may come through the wall from a neighboring apartment. Inspect rooms that share a wall with a neighbor. (This scenario happens in large apartment complexes and hotels where management didnt get adjacent rooms treated.)

Warning! bed bugs – Review of Commons Inn, Halifax, Nova …

This hotel seems to be under new ownership/management, as it does not live up to the positive reviews we had seen. Rooms are small and dark, with no closet space. My wife and I also noted that cleaning was inconsistent -- the bathroom was ok, but glass tables in the room had a sticky residue. At least two of our colleagues spent one night and moved to a motel in Bedford with better facilities at the same price. The advertized "breakfast" was sparse, and we spoke to the manager about the coffee: bad quality and very weak. It did improve before we left, but we suspect it may have reverted afterwards. On the upside, the Inn is quite central to Halifax activities, and has free off-street parking, and the front desk staff were unfailingly courteous and helpful. Downtown Halifax may be overpriced in general in the "high" season, but we would not recommend the Commons Inn, especially at $110 a night.

This review is the subjective opinion of a TripAdvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

Bedbug Clean-Up & Prevention – Home | Alberta Health Services

How does a dwelling become infested with bedbugs?

Bedbugs can be carried into homes unknowingly in luggage, clothing, blankets and pillows. Homes with second-hand furniture may be especially vulnerable to infestation. No home is immune to a bedbug infestation. Bedbugs can be found on linen, mattresses (in protected areas like seams), bed springs, headboards, furniture used for sleeping, in and around sleeping areas, or even between floor boards and behind baseboards. Look for living or dead bedbugs, small bloodstains from crushed insects, or dark spots from droppings.

A licensed pest control professional can be hired to regularly inspect and quickly address infestations. These practical recommendations can be followed:

The best way to control a bedbug infestation is by conducting frequent, regular cleaning and eliminating their hiding places. Since bedbugs can live for several months without food and water, pest control professionals may recommend the use of a pesticide.

Make sure your exterminator provides information on:

Never resell or donate infested furniture.

When throwing away an infested furniture:

Public awareness needed to prevent bed bugs – Star Beacon …

(BPT) - One of the most feared household pests of the past decade has been the bed bug. What may be the most unnerving part about these tiny pests is how they hide in mattresses, couches and even dressers waiting for their next blood meal.

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of bed bug infestations across the country. About 99 percent of pest professionals have treated for bed bugs in the past year, according to a survey by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA).

Bed bugs have several qualities that specifically help them survive and spread, says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. The best ways to stop the spread of bed bugs are through education and taking precautions. Consumers should be aware of their surroundings when traveling and be vigilant about searching for signs of an infestation.

Understanding bed bugs

Bed bugs are often mistaken for being nocturnal. The truth is they are attracted to the carbon dioxide emitted by their hosts. For this reason, they tend to feed at night while a person is sleeping and emitting a steady stream of carbon dioxide. However, they will also consume a blood meal during the day - especially in heavily infested areas. Although bed bugs prefer to feed on humans, they will feed on other warm-blooded hosts, too.

Bed bugs hide very easily thanks to their small size and flat, seed-like shape, allowing them to squeeze into tiny cracks and crevices. They can also spread very quickly. One female bed bug can lay one-to-five eggs per day, several hundred in a lifetime. If left untreated, bed bugs can quickly become a much bigger problem for homeowners.

Keeping your home bed bug free

Bed bugs are very good hitchhikers. They can latch onto luggage, clothing or linens and easily move from place to place or room to room. The best defense against bed bugs is awareness and prevention, especially when traveling or on vacation.

If staying in hotels, even five-star accommodations, pull back the sheets on any beds and check for bed bugs themselves or the telltale signs theyve been there. Look for shed body casings, and dark red or brown spots on the mattress or along its seams. Consider packing a flashlight to use in these visual inspections. When checking an area for bed bugs, be sure any bags are placed off the floor on a hard surface. This reduces the likelihood of a bed bug latching onto it for a ride home. And once home, throw clothes in the dryer on high heat, vacuum the suitcase interior and exterior, and dispose of the vacuum receptacle contents immediately.
