Researchers from Rutgers Devise Bed Bug Detection Device …

As bed bugs become a problem in the wake of a ban on DDT, three researchers from Rutgers University are working on a trap that wont kill the pests, but will alert homeowners to their presence, National Geographic reports.

Narinderpal Singh, Changlu Wang, and Richard Cooper created a bedbug detector out of a dog bowl and black duct tape, according to the report. The bedbugs are attracted to black and natural climb vertical surfaces. Once they climb the tape, they get stuck in the bowl.

The detector becomes more effective when two body odors, nonanal and 1-octen-3-ol, are mixed with spearmint oil, and coriander Egyptian oil as a cocktail and put into the bowl, although sugar, yeast and water are just as effective, according to the report.

According to the report, their invention captures three times more bedbugs than the Climbup insect interceptor, the leading bedbug detector currently on the market.

Wang is an an assistant extension specialist at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, and is studying the feeding habits and dispersing patterns of bedbugs, according to Rutgers.

Its an area of study that has become more important since the ban of DDT, an enormously effective insecticide from 1939-1972. It was banned in 1973.

The bed bug problem has become prolific in the northeast, according to Rutgers.

Bed Bugs | Pesticides | US EPA

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) has long been a pest feeding on blood, causing itchy bites and generally irritating their human hosts. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) all consider bed bugs a public health pest. However, unlike most public health pests, bed bugs are not known to transmit or spread disease.

They can, however, cause other public health problems, so its important to pay close attention to preventing and controlling bed bugs.

Experts believe the recent increase in bed bugs in the United States may be due to more travel, lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices.

The good news is that there are ways to control bed bugs. Getting good, solid information is the first step in both prevention and control. While there is no chemical quick fix, there are effective strategies to control bed bugs involving both non-chemical and chemical methods.

On this page;

Bites on the skin are a poor indicator of a bed bug infestation. Bed bug bites can be misidentified, which gives the bed bugs time to spread to other areas of the house. Bed bug bites can look like bites from other insects (such as mosquitoes or spiders), rashes (such as eczema or fungal infections), or even hives. Some people do not react to bed bug bites at all.

A far more accurate way to identify a possible infestation is to look for physical signs of bed bugs. For example, spots on bedding, as described below, are one of the earliest and most accurate methods.

When cleaning, changing bedding, or staying away from home, look for:

If the room is heavily infested, you may find bed bugs in the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, in the folds of curtains, in drawer joints, in electrical receptacles and appliances, under loose wall paper and wall hangings -- even in the head of a screw. Since bed bugs are only about the width of a credit card, they can squeeze into really small hiding spots. If a crack will hold a credit card, it could hide a bed bug.

Bed Bugs Edmonton – Edmonton Bed Bug Removal Service …

Bed bugs are one of the most frustrating pests to have living in your home, especially because it invades a space that is meant to be restful and relaxing. But instead results in lack of sleep and possible bite marks. We understand the impact of bed bugs on your life and are here to help you.

We offer a thorough treatment consisting of steaming, spraying, powder, and fogging. When the technician comes in, they will do an inspection. they will start with a hot steaming of the mattress, which helps kills the eggs. This is followed by a residue spray on all baseboards, headboards, footboard and drawer. They will apply a powder to cracks and crevices and at the end they will release a light fog in the air which help pulls the bed bugs out of their hiding spots to come in contact with the chemicals. After the treatment is done the house owners will have to be out of the house for 2-4 hours. Call the office back for a follow up service 2-3 weeks later.

Adults, nymphs, and eggs must be eliminated to get rid of the entire infestation. Sometimes a second treatment is required.

Bedbug Reach the Yukon | Canada Bedbugs

This is an interesting article by John Thompson of the Yukon News. Click here to view original article.

Think the Yukon is safe from the scourge of bedbugs because of our cold climate?

Think again.

The bloodsuckers have tormented Sherrill Armstrong, a social housing tenant who lives on the second floor of 408 Alexander Street in Whitehorse, since July.

As if that werent bad enough, Armstrong also had to worry about a threatening letter sent to her by the Yukon Housing Corporation, which owns the building. It warns her that she owes $711 for fumigation costs and the disposal of her bug-ridden bed.

Thats a lot of money for someone on a fixed income, such as Armstrong.

Failure to make arrangements to pay this amount by January 18, 2011 may result in a termination of your tenancy, warns the January 4 letter.

Armstrong never replied. Im not paying for something I cant control, she said.

Thankfully, the housing corporation has since stood down on its threat, following a phone call from the Yukon News.

The corporation typically charges tenants for the cost of damage to units, said housing corporation spokesperson Nathalie Ouellet.
