PORTLAND -- A Northeast Portland High School has been dealing with a creepy problem: bed bugs.

"We were all squeamish and 'Eww,'" said Christina Rilatt, secretary at Alliance High, Meek campus, on Northeast Alberta Court.

According to district officials, an English teacher discovered the first bed bug in his classroom last week. Instead of throwing it away, he put the bed bug in a container and showed it to pest control.

Without that positive identification, we wouldnt have able to treat the problem so quickly, said Portland Public Schools spokeswoman Christine Miles.

On Thursday, the district brought in a "bed bug-sniffing dog," to sniff the entire school. The dog discovered traces of bed bugs in seven lockers, a classroom and pile of clothes that had been donated.

"All of those things were steam-cleaned," said Miles. She said this was the first time the district had ever dealt with bed bugs at any of its schools.

Miles said district officials werent sure where the bed bugs came from. They believed they have solved the problem, but to make sure, they planned to bring back the bed bug-sniffing dog in a couple weeks.

BEDBUGS – Globe Pest Control Ltd

Long considered eradicated in most metropolitan areas, bed bugs are making a comeback. They are being found in cities across the country, everywhere from homeless shelters to five-star hotels. Contrary to popular belief, the presence of bed bugs does not indicate a lack of cleanliness.

Why Have Bed Bugs Returned?

In the past, insecticides such as DDT helped to keep the bed bug population at bay with residues that continued working after the product was sprayed. Now, with the increase in use of bait traps instead of broad spectrum sprays, specific pests such as ants and cockroaches are being targeted, and bed bugs are no longer being eliminated.

In addition, people now travel more than ever before. Places that see a great deal of turnover such as hotels give bed bugs the opportunity to travel to new locations on luggage or clothing.

Why Are Bed Bugs a Problem?

Bed bugs are nuisances and are generally off-putting to people, but they do not pose any major health risks. As with mosquitoes, people can be allergic to their bites, which can cause swelling, itchy welts and in some cases infections. However, they are not known to carry any blood-borne diseases. Bed bugs are mainly active at night. As they typically feed when people are sound asleep, their bites may not be detected immediately. One species of bed bug feeds primarily on humans, but there are other species that feed on other mammals and on birds. Bed bugs are moved into and around a dwelling through infested furniture and bedding. They can also enter a home or hotel by being carried in on clothing or luggage.

5 Signs That You’ve Got Bed Bugs! | Propertyware

Property owners who think bed bug problems are confined to apartments and hotels high-density inhabitations may want to think twice. Bed bugs dont discriminate on where they set up shop; they are just as much at home in a one-story rental home as they are in a high-rise.

Bed bugs have been a particularly aggravating pest in the rental industry in recent years. Tenants and landlords sometimes are at odds at whos responsible for an infestation and how it gets cleaned up. The problem has escalated as high as the legal system, which recently ruled in favor of a tenant to the tune of $800,000.

As temperatures drop in the winter and the heat gets turned up, the time is right for bed bugs to become a problem. They are most at home in cozy, warmer climates like heating ducts, electrical outlets, bedding and warm electronics. These are perfect places for the tiny creatures to colonize and multiply.

Because bed bugs are so small, an infestation is often difficult to see, says John Robinson, a pest control specialist with Venturi Technologies, Inc. Although they can live a year without feeding, bed bugs seek food about once per week; human and animal blood is their ideal meal.

Robinson said bed bugs dont stray far from their food source, and with a five-week cycle from egg to maturity, a small dinner party can turn into a banquet if an infestation isnt quickly identified.

He says the best way to prevent a bed bug infestation is to perform regular inspections. Encouraging your residents to be on the lookout for these little guys is the first step. While bed bugs are seldom seen, they leave noticeable evidence, and Robinson offers five identifiers:

Blood stains resulting from a bed bug bite are often visible on lighter-colored sheets and pillow cases. The stains are typically dark or rusty spots of excrement. But these signs of an infestation wont always be found on bedding, because bed bugs are highly mobile and move fast. In addition to bedding, stains can be visible on furniture, clothes, and even walls.

Unlike blood stains, fecal spotting tends to be black or dark in color. The stains are from partially digesting blood and clustered in groups in areas that bed bugs inhabit. The spots will smear if wiped with a wet rag. Evidence of fecal spotting is usually visible in their typical hideouts, like along mattress seams, box spring edges, and corners.

Bed bugs are small, oval parasitic insects that are light brown or reddish-brown in color but are hard to spot. Nocturnal in nature, they feed and move quickly. As they multiply, bed bugs tend to hang out together until overcrowding forces them into other areas. They are fantastic hitchhikers and can end up anywhere, including phones, purses, backpacks, clothing, etc. Look for them along mattress seams, box spring edges and corners, and baseboards.

Bites are not initially felt because of a natural anesthetic in the saliva of bed bugs. Often, it is difficult to distinguish bed bug bites from other insect bites, like those from mosquitoes. One sign, however, is that bites sometimes appear in a line of three, known as breakfast, lunch, and dinner by disease experts. Bites create small red welts that become itchy and eventually blister. Bed bug bites can occur anywhere on the body, including the face.
