The 10 Best Bed Bug Exterminators in New Brunswick, NJ 2020

If you are concerned you have a bed bug infestation, look for physical signs of their presence. Bed bugs love to hide in small, dark spaces and typically come out to feed (generally on human blood) after dark although they will come out in daylight if hungry enough. The Environmental Protection Agency states that indications of an infestation can include seeing shed exoskeletons of bed bugs, rusty spots on your bedding (which are either bug droppings or bloodstains), live bed bugs, bed bug egg casings, a sweet and musty odor (if the infestation is severe), and evidence of bites on your skin.

To spot bed bugs, look in and along mattress seams and bedding, in curtain and furniture folds, inside cracks or crevices in the walls, behind picture frames and mirrors, under loose wallpaper seams, on recently used luggage or backpacks, inside electronics, and inside clothing or cluttered areas such as closets. If you see signs of bed bugs, be careful not to disturb them too much as you dont want them scattering to other parts of your house.

Bed bug bites: The unsettling sign in your mood that could signal youve been bitten – Express

Bed bugs are a nuisance - they often dwell in parts of the house that are hard to access and they have a penchant for animal and human flesh. The parasitic insects feed on the blood of people and animals while they sleep. In the morning you may wake up to find a trail of red, itchy bite marks on your skin.

The bite marks do not usually present a real threat to your health, although, as the NHS points out, some people have a reaction to the bites.

"They can be very itchy and there may be painful swelling," explains the health body.

What is often overlooked is the psychological effects of bed bug bites.

Research is starting to show that bed bug infections can leave people with anxiety, depression, and paranoia.

In fact, these symptoms are highly prevalent, according to Stphane Perron, a doctor and researcher at the University of Montreal. Speaking to The Atlantic, he said: If you have bed bugs, and if you dont care, thats not a normal reaction. You should be worried. I would consider it a normal reaction to a stressor.

Perron is well versed in this subject, having published a number of papers on the psychological ramifications of bed bugs.

In one study, he and his team looked at apartments that had been reported to the Montreal Public Health Department for unsafe conditions.

Some of those units were infested with bedbugs, but not all of them.

Perron and his team gave the tenants of these buildings a series of questionnaires that assessed all sorts of health impacts, including psychological ones.

All told, 39 of the units had bed bugs, and 52 of them didnt.

When they compared the psychological results between those two samples a method that helps to control for factors that impact mental health like socioeconomic status they found that tenants with bed bugs were far more likely to report anxiety and sleep disturbances than those without.

Another study by medical entomologist Jerome Goddard at Mississippi State University strengthens the association.

Goddard examined posts on bed bug related websites like Bedbugger.com.

When they compared those posts against a checklist of PTSD symptoms they found that 81 percent of people writing these forum posts were describing psychological and emotional effects often associated with the disorder, things like hyper-vigilance, paranoia, obsessive thoughts, and depression.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), bed bug infestations are commonly treated by insecticide spraying.

"If you suspect that you have an infestation, contact your landlord or professional pest control company that is experienced with treating bed bugs," advises the CDC.

There are some self-help tips you can try to stamp out an infestation too.

The NHS recommends washing affected bedding and clothing use a hot wash (60C) or tumble dry on a hot setting for at least 30 minutes.

What are bedbugs?

Bedbugs are flat, wingless insects about 0.6 cm (0.25 in.) long. They range in colour from almost white to brown. They turn rusty red after feeding. Like mosquitoes, bedbugs feed on blood from animals or people.

Bedbugs have that name because they like to hide in bedding and mattresses. Bedbugs usually hide during the day and are active at night when they feed. They can go for weeks without feeding. See a picture of a bedbug.

Bedbugs are not known to spread disease to people. But itching from the bites can be so bad that some people will scratch enough to cause breaks in the skin that get infected easily. The bites can also cause an allergic reaction in some people.

Bedbugs are found worldwide. They are most often found in hotels, motels, hostels, shelters, and apartment complexes where large numbers of people come and go.

Because bedbugs hide in small crevices, they can come into your house on luggage, furniture, clothing, pillows, boxes, and other objects. The bugs can hide in beds, floors, furniture, wood, and paper trash during the day.

The first sign of bedbugs may be red, itchy bites on the skin, usually on the arms or shoulders. Bedbugs tend to leave straight rows of bites, unlike some other insects that leave bites here and there.

Look also for these other signs:

Home treatment can help stop the itching and prevent an infection. You can:

Bedbugs can be hard to kill. Bugs can hide in cracks and crevices in the mattress, bed frame, and box spring. They can spread into cracks and crevices in the room and lay their eggs. For these reasons, it is best to call a professional pest control company for treatment choices. The usual treatments include:

When the bugs are gone, be careful not to bring bedbugs back into your house.

The cause and treatment for bedbugs | CAA-Quebec Residential

Bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) are visible to the naked eye. Brown and flat, measuring 4 mm to 7 mm (0.2 to 0.3 in) long, bedbugs are attracted to the vibrations, warmth, odours and CO2 that we give off as we breathe.

This insect got the name bedbug because it feeds on human blood in the middle of the night while we sleep, most often hiding in mattresses or elsewhere in the bedroom. Bites are often clustered in the areas of the body that are most exposed during sleep, such as the arms and legs.

After feeding for about 15 minutes, a bedbug will retreat into hiding for about a week. Bedbugs are extremely resilient and can survive in a dormant state for months on end without food.

Females lay two to four eggs per day, depositing them inside objects, cracks in furniture and floors, crevices along baseboards, etc. As an infestation intensifies, the colony grows beyond the bedroom to other rooms in the house and, potentially, to neighbouring houses. Bedbugs travel inside wall and floor cavities, inside ducts and along pipes and electrical wires.

Bedbugs leave stains on bedding and mattresses. (Brown stains are from blood after bites; black stains are the insects fecal matter.)

Like many other invaders, this species spreads because of widespread international travel and exchanges of goods. Bedbugs can be found in suitcases, fabric, furniture, cargo vehicles, etc.

Bed bugs found in small section of University of Alberta’s …

Update:1st flr will remain closed Fri for completion of bed bug treatment, entire bldg to be closed Sat for further precautionary treatment

On Saturday, the entire building will be closed as computers and tables in the affected area will be removed and processed in a heat chamber, she said.

Fifty chairs will be removed and treated off-site.

Murphy said there is nothing to suggest bed bugs had infested any library books, but as a precaution, staff have asked the company to check the rest of the library.

That way we can feel really comfortable and confident when we open on Sunday morning, she said.

This is not the first time bed bugs have been reported in the library. Last winter, the fifth floor was treated after reports of bed bugs surfaced.

The library, which opened in 1951 and is the largest on campus and the second largest research library in Canada, is expected to reopen at 11 a.m. Sunday.

We want to reassure our community of users it is highly localized, its being treated and we are, as a precaution, checking to make sure everything else is fine, she said.
