Bed Bug Treatments – Bed Bugs A site devoted to …

By BENJAMIN KONG, Posted January 6th 2012

Everyone is looking for bed bug prevention methods. These pests have made a dramatic reappearance in the U.S. and other western countries during the last few years, after having been nearly eradicated by DDT and other now banned pesticides.

Because bed bugs are inundating a new generation of people who have no experience with them, this seems like a scary new problem. But theres no reason to panicmany myths surround bed bugs, and there are steps you can take to prevent or manage an infestation.

Proper bed bug treatments will ensure that you fully eliminate your bed bug problem.

Bed bugs somehow have the reputation of being disease carriers that live and thrive in filthy conditions.

However, there has never been a single instance of bed bug to human disease transmission. The most serious effects of bed bug bites occur in people with a heightened sensitivity to the insects.

These people may break out in a rash or even hives, similar to what happens with bee stings in sensitive people. But for others, bites may produce no effect, or a small red spot, or one or more itchy spots. Excessive scratching may result in infection, so its important to treat the bite as a bite: keep the area clean and cover it if scratching is a problem.

Bed bugs will choose to nest and feed wherever there are blood sources and places to hidehygiene and sanitation have nothing to do with it. The most immaculately-kept mansion is as susceptible to infestation as a ghetto apartment.

It is also not true that bed bugs are invisible. They are reclusive, and dont come out to feed until they detect motionless targets (such as when were asleep, or sitting on the couch watching television), but the feeding adults are large enough to observe. But since you cant feel their bite, its unlikely youll notice one crawling around when your attention is elsewhere.

So in a lot of ways, bed bugs are no worse than the myriad other insects we are already accustomed to. Mosquitos, ants, flies, spidersall find a way into our homes at one time or another, and given a chance all would take root there and create an infestation. But were familiar with these pests and know how to tell when things are getting out of handand what to do about it.

More bed bugs found on Guam – Marianas Variety Guam Edition

More bed bugs have been popping up on island.

Dr. Aubrey Moore, extension entomologist for the University of Guams College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, said hes been receiving samples every month from local pesticide companies.

Moore stressed, however, that the number of bed bugs is still not alarmingly high.

Moore gets at least one report of bed bugs every month or every two months. The bedbugs were found in hotels, private residences and apartment complexes on island.

In 2007, I got one sample. In 2008, I got two or three. In the last few years, it hasnt increased very much, he said.

There are two species the common bed bug and the tropical bed bug. The insects are flat, wingless, and reddish-brown. The bugs are about 1/8 to inch long and 1/8 inch wide.

They can be found in cracks, crevices, furniture, beneath loose wall paper, bed frames, and in the seams of mattresses. They are best known to come out at night and bite people who are sleeping.

The tropical bed bug is probably the most common on Guam, said Moore.

He further stated that there is a big bed bug population explosion in the mainland, but this is only limited to the common bed bug. Tropical

When we started getting them here, we thought we were getting them from travelers in the big cities, but then we found out we were getting the tropical bed bugs that are found in Florida and Hawaii or any warm climate. I was kind of surprised that most of our bed bugs are tropical bed bugs, he said.
