Bed bugs calling Alaska home at increasing rates

Tiny, flat insects are scurrying around Alaska, hiding in furniture and sucking human blood at increasing rates, health officials say.

Bedbugs aren't so much a health hazard as they are a public nuisance, and their proliferation in recent years prompted the state Department of Health and Social Services to issue a bulletin Tuesday, alerting residents of their potential new roommates.

Joe McLaughlin, state epidemiologist, assured Alaskans that the bugs haven't just set up in the Last Frontier. The increase in these apple-seed-sized insects is happening worldwide, he said.

But why?

Health and pest control experts have some theories. More people are traveling in and out of the country, immigration rates have risen and some landlords just don't care, they said. Plus, bed bugs can latch onto a person, suddenly mobilize and then once at home in a new spot, they double in population every 16 days, the bulletin said.

"They're the ultimate hitchhikers," said Tony Barrett, the municipality's environmental health program manager. And, he said, they'll pretty much hang out, drink blood and lay eggs anywhere with a couch or a bed. "Bed bugs don't care if it's a four-star hotel or a no-star hotel," he said.

In Anchorage, the city logged 68 bed bug complaints in 2013, a decrease from the 84 in 2012. There was just one complaint in 2007 and 2008 combined, according to city data.

For Ken Perry, the general manager of Pied Piper Pest Control in Anchorage, the bugs have brought business. He has combatted bed bugs since 1987, but has only recently started to deal with them at high rates. He fields about five phone calls about bed bugs a day, he said.

Complaints of bedbugs increase in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Blood-sucking insects are on the rise in Alaska, and its not even mosquito season.

The state Department of Health and Social Services issued a bulletin Tuesday announcing a proliferation of bedbugs, the apple seed-size pests that can double in number every 16 days.

The biting bugs are more of a public nuisance than a health hazard, the bulletin said. Bites are at first painless but can turn into itchy welts. Some people do not develop welts.

Signs of an infestation include molted exoskeletons and white eggs or eggshells about one millimeter long. Bed bug excrement looks like small rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets, the bulletin said.

Bedbugs can arrive with people back from trips outside, or new residents.

Theyre the ultimate hitchhikers, said Tony Barrett, environmental health program manager for the municipality of Anchorage. They arrive and lay eggs in a couch or bed, he told the Anchorage Daily News (http://bit.ly/1fHEy7j ).

Bed bugs dont care if its a four-star hotel or a no-star hotel, he said.

Anchorage received 68 bed bug complaints in 2013, down from 84 in 2012. However, in 2007 and 2008, the city took just one call each year on bedbugs.

Ken Perry, general manager of Pied Piper Pest Control in Anchorage, has been dealing with bedbugs since 1987 but has seen high rates only recently. The company takes five calls per day on the pests.

Weve always done bed bug work, Perry said. Maybe one a year or two a year, its always been there. Its never completely disappeared. But then, we started seeing a huge increase in 2000, predominantly in the travel industry.

Alaska’s Bed Bug Problem Grows | Local News – KTUU.com …

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -

Bed bugs, known throughout the nation as bloodsucking parasites, are seeing a resurgence nationwide -- including Alaska.

At the Alaska Forum on the Environment, experts talked about bed bugs and how to prevent them Thursday. Katie Burbage, an environmental health specialist for the Tanana Chiefs Conference, says bed bugs can't transmit disease but still are a health risk.

"There's definitely a yuck factor with them," Burbage said. "They come out at night and feed on you...that's a little creepy."

Lief Albertson, with the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Cooperative Extension Service, says there's a growing bed bug concern in rural Alaska. In addition to the health risk they pose, any rumor about a lodge or inn having bed bugs could have a devastating economic effect on the area -- but Albertson says the problem is manageable.

"You want to get rid of a lot of clutter," Albertson said. "Once you do that step you do things to simplify that environment to eliminate places for bed bugs to hide."

For more information on how to prevent or get rid of bed bugs you can visit the Cooperative Extension Service's website.
