This environmentally-friendly process has now been adopted in the industry for bed bug control. Heat treatment is widely regarded as one of the most effective solutions for bed bugs.
Portable heaters, either electric or propane-fired, are used to gradually heat the ambient air within rooms to above 120 F while monitoring with strategically placed temperature sensors and infrared thermometers.
This high temperature is then held for 1 to 3 hours or more depending on the level of infestation, and relative level of clutter in the treated rooms.
Heat treatment is a low risk option for customers (and their pets), and the environment due to the minimal use of pesticides.
The service can be completed in just one day rather than over the course of a few weeks, and its effective against all life stages of a bed bug.
Contact your local Ehrlich office at 1-800-837-5520 to find out more, as heat treatment is not offered in every service area.
Conventional treatments consisting of insecticides remains our primary and most turned to approach for handling bed bugs.
Several insecticide formulations, including liquids, dusts and aerosols, are typically required for a thorough bed bug service due in part to the varying types of surfaces, materials and situations encountered.
Dusts are an excellent tool to use when treating for bed bugs. These formulations tend to last longer than their liquid counterparts and can be easily applied into voids where liquids may not reach or should not be applied.
Aerosols are also convenient tools, especially when fitted with a crack and crevice tip, allowing direct application into cracks and crevices where bed bugs like to hide.
Vacuuming will be able to remove large portions of a bed bug population from areas where they are visible
Treatment will usually begin at the focal point of the infestation, which is generally the bed in an infested room.
This will be followed by careful treatment of all items in the vicinity, including baseboards, floor/wall junctions, tack strips under carpets, behind electrical outlets and switches, cracks in walls and floors, items hanging on walls and relevant structural voids.
High temperatures are lethal to most insects provided they cannot quickly escape to a cooler location. The temperatures produced by portable steam units are more than sufficient to kill bed bugs and their eggs upon contact.
Steaming allows us to treat all surfaces of mattresses, box springs and upholstered furniture, which are often restricted with insecticides.
Steaming tends to get bed bugs to move out of deeper recesses as the temperature begins to rise, making them more likely to expose themselves or cross any applied insecticide.
Using steam treatment, means there is less need for applying pesticides.
Steam may NOT be appropriate for treating all surfaces due to the moisture that is produced.
While not our first choice, bed bug fumigation is also an option in a few select situations.
Fumigation uses materials in a gaseous state, which can penetrate all items placed within a fumigation space and is able to kill all stages of bed bugs present during the exposure period.
Freezing is also an option for eliminating bed bugs from some items which can not be treated conventionally
As a homeowner, you can action this solution by using your home freezer.
Enclose infested items in plastic bags and freeze them for about a week.
A chest type freezer will allow you to freeze larger items too.
While freezing is reported to be effective against nymphs and adults, eggs appear to be more tolerant of cold temperatures and must be exposed for at least 30 days before they become non-viable.
At Ehrlich, we ensure that there is a follow-up with every customer.
Our current standard practice is for at least 2 follow-up visits after the initial corrective service, to include inspection and treatment as needed.
We provide this service to ensure that we have effectively resolved your bed bug problem.
