The 12-story Archibald Rutledge apartment building in Spartanburg is infested with bed bugs according to the Spartanburg Housing Authority.

Operations manager Daryl Dalton said the infestation will take a week to clean up. Dalton said a professional extermination crew is working their way from the top to the bottom of the 150 unit building.

Dalton says many residents have lost everything because of the infestation

"They (exterminators) have gotten to some apartments that are so infested that everything has to go," Dalton said. "It has to go in order for us to warranty their work."

Bed bugs infest Oahu transitional living center – Hawaii …

KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A mother is speaking out about her son's unsanitary living conditions at a Kaneohe halfway house.

It's infested with bed bugs.

However, the owner of the home says it's tough to keep the place pest free.

The mother asked us to conceal her identity out of fear of retaliation or her son getting kicked out of the home. She says she is very grateful he now has a place to live, but believes everyone who lives there deserves better.

"He's clean and sober and he has his 90-day coin. Now he's over 100 days. I'm just grateful to the whole program system. But I'm just concerned about his living conditions right now. That's the only problem I have," she said.

Her son captured video on his cell phone of one crawling all over his bed. Another video shows a nest of them at the edge of his mattress. He says he wakes up with bites all over his legs and feet and he can feel them crawling on him while he sleeps.

I've seen the video and obviously it's not healthy. It's just awful to look at what he's living in," she said.

Owner of the home, Jody Solbach, has five transitional living centers. He says a total of 70 people live in them and he is aware of the home's bed bug infestation.

"We've been made aware that there is a problem with an infestation at one of my houses and we have a protocol to address those issuesunfortunately some of these protocol haven't been met at this house," Solbach said.

Hawaii Exterminator Says Bedbugs Becoming An Epidemic …

By Diane Ako

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite. It's been an old saying for decades, but lately, it's taken on new meaning. Bedbugs are becoming a big problem in Hawaii and across the country.

Terminix exterminator Carlton Agena says the bugs are not discriminating. "I've seen it at apartment buildings, 4 star hotels in Waikiki. I've seen it on all islands. Luxury homes. Youth hostels."

A bedbug is the size of an apple seed. In a mattress, it's very small. And it's a creating a big problem in the US. Agena says, "I would call it more an epidemic."

If you get bites or see stains on your furniture, you've got them. "You need to get a pest professional. You don't want to take care of this problem yourself," warns Agena.

Here's what you can do, according to Agena: "Get the bedding off the bed and put it in a plastic bag. And get it out of the house. Use the dryer. 100 degrees plus will kill the bugs."

With a little vigilance, you can keep your home safe from this nasty pest.

More information from Terminix about bedbugs:

What is a bedbug?

Bed bugs are small insects that lurk in the crevices of mattresses, box springs and furniture. They emerge at night to feed on the blood of their sleeping victims. While their bites are generally painless, they can leave behind red, itchy welts similar to a mosquito bite.

Bed bugs infest Honolulu homeless shelter

Bed bugs.

Just the thought of them make you itch.

But those staying at a Honolulu homeless shelter say it's not just their minds playing tricks on them. They got bite marks to prove it.

"Oh yeah I got bite all over my legs. Lotta cuts over here, cuts over there. It's really infested in there, said Michael Laimana pointing at his legs.

Laimana is one of 150 people who stay at the shelter each night. He says his bed isn't the only one with a pest problem.

A mother shared photos of her 3-year-old covered with red marks that she says are bed bug bites.

Connie Mitchell, the Executive Director at the Institute for Human Services, admits there is a problem. But she says it's almost impossible to prevent with the amount of traffic in and out of the emergency shelter.

"We definitely take it seriously. We have regular fumigation going on and we also have protocols that we follow on a daily basis as well as when we actually find that there's some kind of infestation with a particular bunk," said Mitchell.

There was a recent infestation at Oahu Community Correctional Center and some of Hawaii's finest hotels have had reports of them. So Mitchell says a problem at a homeless shelter is almost inevitable.

"Sometimes, with the folks that do come in, they're bringing them in their belongings a lot of the time if they're coming from the street. So it's very challenging to keep it in control, Mitchell said.
